Guess the song reference while I refresh the KC Star and every Boston paper's web sites. Hint: The album has been discussed here before.

Guns & Roses "The Blues"
That’s it…I’m checking out until the fucker’s actually hired. This is too irritating to wait around.

Hate To Break It To You
But yup…it’s from “”http://www.metrolyrics.com/the-blues-lyrics-guns-n-roses.html" target="new">The Blues" by Guns & Roses
It may also be in another song as well, but honestly you need to come up with a less vague refrain to identify which one you’re talking about…that line’s probably in about a hundred other songs in human history.

Well
Love is the most-used topic in songwriting, and it’s not like those lyrics are so unique. They’ve probably been used before. You need to use a refrain that’s got a bit more to it.
I think it’s also in a song by The Cars.

It's Also On "Street of Dreams"
Off of the highly-disappointing “Chinese Democracy” album.
Frankly, “Better” was the only song on that album that I liked. The rest of it was directionless crap. The rest wouldn’t have even been good b-sides on their older stuff.

In Fact, I'm Not Really Sure Which Album Disappointed Me More This Year
“Chinese Democracy” or “Dig Out Your Soul” by Oasis. Probably “Dig Out Your Soul”, simply for the fact that I expected that album to be really good. Guns & Roses, on the other hand, I figured would be a complete trainwreck so “Chinese Democracy” actually exceeded my expectations…even though I still think it sucks.
At least AC/DC pleasantly surprised me with “Black Ice”.

Buckethead appears to have been the primary…he was on most of the tracks. His work sounded pretty good, even though it got lost in whatever the hell it was they were trying to accomplish.

But for some reason, they’re one of those bands that hasn’t passed the test of time for me. I still like them. Just not as much as did.

I Got Into Their Music After College
I’ve bought every album they’ve made, most of their singles (because their b-sides are usually excellent) and I’ve got some bootleg stuff as well. Great band. But this last album was really disappointing…aside from one track (“Falling Down”) there’s nothing on it that sticks with you and it’s one of the most bland and forgettable albums that I’ve ever bought, from any band. Hopefully it’s a one-off and not a sign of a trend that they’re just getting too old to put out good tunes any more (which happens with every band eventually).

Like “”http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6tuPBrSl9Nw" target="new">Whatever“, which didn’t make it onto any of their albums and only got released as a single. Or "”http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=amYWL_VviiA" target="new">Acquiesce" which is considered by many critics to be the best b-side ever released.

After “St. Anger” I lost all interest in buying anything else Metallica ever made. That was one of the worst albums of all time…a complete piece of shit. I hated every single song on that album and it sounded like someone had recorded it in a garage with their older brother’s tape deck.

That's Because Lemmy Doesn't Give A Shit About Celebrity
He’s still just as unlikeable and as uninterested in pandering hte to public as he ever was…which has enabled him to keep making good music (and yes, I’m a big fan of Lemmy and anti-social musicians in general). The guys from Metallica, on the other hand, at some point decided that publicity was more important than making good tunes. I suspect that’s about the time when Jason Newsted departed…he jumped off that ship right before it sunk. Cliff Burton was the heart behind early Metallica, Newsted was the heart behind their biggest commercial successes, now I have no idea who’s putting their crap together.

The only reason the bad guys’ plots run a full 24 hours is that the people surrounding Jack Bauer are so bad at their jobs. It’s like what would happen if you staff an entire intel shop with temps.

The Point At Which I Quit
Was three or four episodes into season four (I missed season three because I was deployed to Afghanistan). The bitchy new supervisor of Jack Bauer (who’d fired him for heroin addiction without even having to pretend that he was a federal employee) was letting her employees blackmail her into promotions to do their jobs. At that point I realized the suspension of disbelief was just too much for me…it was like a demonic possession storyline on a soap opera, too cheesy and uninteresting to waste time on.
The military’s ruined a lot of films for me that way. When the writers do a film and don’t even attempt to get the details right, it just pisses me off and makes it impossible for me to enjoy it.

I Loved "The Wire" Too
They kind of screwed up the final season (although that scene between Marlo and Prop Joe was outstanding) but seasons 1-4 were as good as anything that’s ever been put on TV. I’m actually re-watching “Six Feet Under” right now…love that one as well. And “Sopranos” and “Deadwood” were brilliant, of course. Sadly, they don’t see to have come up with anything as good to replace them. Showtime’s kind of taken the lead in that category with “Dexter”.

He Was Also Profane
But he believed strongly in God, and reincarnation. Had some rather harsh words about Muslims in some of his journals, although I don’t think he was a bigot. Devoted student of history as well…he understood that in warfare one of the keys to victory in the war you were fighting was to know and understand all of the other wars that had been fought in the same place. It was a large part of what made him so effective, both as a combatant commander and a post-war administrator.
Gen. Petraeus (who I think is an excellent wartime leader) is of that same school of thought. Understand the nature of the conflict in the arena in which you’re fighting. Too bad a general of his caliber had to serve under such a rotten commander-in-chief in such a messed up war.

by Eric Allen on Jan 12, 2009 4:33 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
It Depends On The Conflict
The U.S. is fighting a counterinsurgency. In a counter-insurgency the key is to isolate the insurgents from the population (via winning hearts and minds) and to accomplish that the rules of engagement must discourage soldiers from frequently using their firearms. When the ROE is looser in its restrictions, it leaves an opening for the insurgents to provoke a hostile overreactive response that tends to target and harm the civilians more than it does the insurgents, at which point the insurgents have won that battle, no matter how many of them are killed, because they’ve helped turn the civilian noncombatant population’s opinion against U.S. forces.
Stuff like that is why you want to avoid getting entangled in counterinsurgencies if there’s a way around it…they’re messy, frustrating, costly (in both people and money) and very difficult to win.

From what I understand...
Patton’s family said that Scott captued Pattn’s personality perfectly, even if the movie took some liberties with reality.
If the O-line isn't built up, a rookie QB is gonna look bad next season. If the O-line is a lot better, Thigpen will look better next season.

The Movie Was Actually Based On Omar Bradley's Book
Bradley and Patton had some issues between them. But then you’re almost never going to see movies completely reflect reality. They always seem to take liberties for dramatic license.
Also, Patton supposedly had a much higher-pitched voice than George C. Scott. :)

heard the same about his voice.
IIRC, just about every US general in WWII served under at one point or another. Also given to understand that Patton didn’t deal well with former subordinates who were promoted above him.
OTOH, I’ve also read that Patton pushed hard with about everyone, and it got him a rep as a blusterer and a bully, but that the people who said that didn’t realize that GSP expected the people he pushed to push back, just as hard, if not harder. That he viewed just about everything in terms of conflict.
Dunno if either’s fully true. As much myth surrounds him as fact, it seems to me.
