Pioili and McDaniels packaged deal?
One would think that if Pioli wanted McDaniels as his head coach, that he would have told him to hold tight while he negotiated his new GM position with the Chiefs. Do you think that he told McDaniels that he's going to go back to New England, and to look for a position without him?
I've never been as excited about a Management move for one of my teams. Based on his reputation, we would of had an injection of "winning attitude". Now with McDaniels leaving for a competitor, I think Pioli told McDaniels to fend for himself.
I'm sure the two collaborated. Please prove me wrong!

OR
Pioli told McDaniels he is keeping Herm for this year and McDaniels should go elsewhere. I think this is the strongest signal so far that Herm is staying.

Or Pioli has his coach in Shanahan.
Lets hope Clark lets the new GM start fresh, with his guys. Who would want a coach, who has lost twice as many as he has won in KC?

If we went to a 3-4 ...
we wasted our draft pick on Glenn Dorsey. I think his talents would be wasted as a nose tackle.

Glenn would have to drop 20lbs
AT LEAST, to even sniff production as a 5 Technique in the NFL. Richard Seymour is the prototypical 5 tech in the league, 6’5 – 6’6 275-300. I’ll just come out and say it, Dorsey is to the 5 tech (in a 3-4) what alfonso boone is to a 6 tech (DE in a 4-3). There is your answer…

Intriguing Question
I’ve never coached or played organized football in my life, and I make this comment with that in mind:
Is it possible that Dorsey could be converted to a 3-4 D-end? He’s always been known for his explosive quickness for his size and he actually weighs less than Richard Seymour, who plays end in the Pats 3-4. The issue would seem to be his height and the fact that he’d be learning an entirely new position.
This is something I’m curious about more than anything else – I’ve always had a thing for the 3-4 (blame Madden) but I’ll admit the Chiefs are short quality linebackers let alone in the 4-3.

We would be short LB's in a 5-2.
His height is my only concern, but I look at Ravens DE Bannan I believe he is only 6’2 and they weigh about the same, and I guarantee that Dorsey has more abilities than him. I’ve been doing some research on this and if we signed Nick Eason RDE away from the Steelers and Rocky Bernard from the Seahawks, we could have a pretty good D Line. Drafting LB’s would then be our main defensive priority in the draft.

Still think
That Shanahan will sit out the 2009 season, soak up some of Pat Bowlen’s money, and get prepared for big money offers – probably outside the AFC West – next offseason.

Agree
Even these mainstream news stories about Pioli’s increased interest mention that Hunt is working hard to convince his new GM to let Herm finish out the contract.
If it does happen, I still have to hope that Gunther and Krumrie are out – they’ve done nothing to keep their jobs IMHO.

Why would Pioli keep Herm?
In his last year of his contract, has done nothing to earn an extension, he is a lame duck. It would be hard to get any quality free agents when they do not even know which coach they would be playing for, or which system they would be playing in.

Trust me
I want Herm out as much as anybody. It’s Clark that – if reports are to be believed – wants Herm to be able to finish his deal, at the least. Not only did he sign off on the rebuilding (if not of the 2-14 variety), but he and Herm are tight.

What GM would want a HC
who has a direct pipeline to the owner, who could undermine his authority at any given time, why put yourself in that situation?

Mostly
I’m trying to get myself in a mental state where I don’t flip out if Herm is retained. Once the Chiefs actually get around to hiring a GM and contemplating a new coaching staff, all of the top candidates could be out of play. Stranger things have happened.
Also, I think I oversimplified in the previous post – Clark likes Herm, but Herm’s leash is now considerably shorter after a 2-14 season and Carl having taken the fall. Unlike with Carl, when it comes down to new GM vs. Herm, Herm will be the one to go.

Herm was a bad hire.
He might have an idea about building a team, but is not a good enough of a coach to get it done.

ESPN is reporting that contract negotiations
between Pioli and the Chiefs have not yet begun, citing a Boston source.

The only reason I can think of why Pioli would keep Herm one year...
…it that Ferentz might be easier to get out of Iowa City a year from now. It is getting really late in the game to pull a guy out of college. National signing day is in February.
If Pioli is as fond of Ferentz as many seem to think, he might be willing to wait one more year to get his guy.

The only thing working againt that...
Ferentz does have one kid left in high school (I believe a sophomore) here in Iowa City and a couple in college and grad school here at the University. He has said he will not leave Iowa City until after all his kids are done with high school. While this could change, it seems that the year is this year. I don’t think he would uproot his youngest right before the last two years of school. From al accounts (some personal from his children) he is a family man above all else.

good call donny
The only reason Pioli is linked to McDaniels is because they worked for the same team, I have not heard one credible source that has said Pioli was even thinking about hiring McDaniels, maybe i am wrong and would gladly except defeat if somebody proved otherwise, but from what i know Piloi with McDaniels is just a dream concocted by chiefs fans,
