With the third pick in the NFL draft, the Kansas City Chiefs select...

just curious of everyone's thoughts on who we should draft. The three most likely positions seem to be DE, LB or QB. I'm all for bringing in Orakpo, he seems like he could be a great addition...

Top 3

1. Trade down to 10 or so and grab Laurinaitis or Maualuga(I know trading down is almost impossible, but this would be my top priority)
2. Matt Stafford
3. Brian Orakpo

If either Maclin or Harvin are sitting there when we pick in round 2 would anybody else grab them as well?

No

O-line is a much higher priority IMO and there will be excellent Gs and Cs there.

by Joel Thorman on Jan 2, 2009 8:55 AM CST up reply actions

there will be G/C in the 3rd round as well

Playmakers like Maclin/Harvin aren’t always available.

Maclin

I’ve heard 1st round with him…

by Joel Thorman on Jan 2, 2009 10:02 AM CST up reply actions

So

If he’s there then I guess we go after him considering he might be the best value there (like DaJuan Morgan last year).

by Joel Thorman on Jan 2, 2009 10:03 AM CST up reply actions

Are you being sarcastic?

It’s hard to tell, because that is one of the reason’s wny I would draft one of the 2. Plus having a weapon on KR/PR is something we haven’t had in 4 years(when Dante was good)

No

DaJuan Morgan was rated as a 2nd rounder by most folks and he was there in the 3rd which is why the Chiefs took him even though S wasn’t a glaring need.

We just drafted Kevin Robinson for the returner role last year so I wouldn’t be surprised if they gave him time.

Bradford

We need a potential franchise QB, and he could be that guy.

KC's QB problems are solved...

With the 3rd pick in the 2009 NFL Draft the KC Chiefs select Josh Freeman QB Kansas State. He is going pro, so no need to worry about the Bradford/Stafford debate.

I think you have to go QB

Bradford or Stafford. Either or both should still be there when we pick.

We already have a fantastic young LT and RT and the other positions can be filled in the later rounds (unless Richardson works out as a RT).

All the DEs are seriously underweight and will have the same trouble Tamba Hali does.

I disagree. Orakpo is a freak, he is alot stronger and quicker off the edge than Hali. I do agree with you about Michael Johnson being to skinny, especially on a 6’7 frame, he should be about 290 or more.

Orakpo is 6-4, 260 lbs

There is a big difference between pushing around future accountants in college and going up against Pro Bowl NFL Left Tackles. Maybe he can do it, I don’t know, but I know you would like to see him beefed up a little.

by ChiefDJ on Jan 2, 2009 11:35 AM CST up reply actions

Future accountants?

Loadholt(OU left tackle), Russell Okung(OSU left tackle, Jason Smith(Baylor left tackle) are 1st or 2nd round draft picks, plus there are only a couple Pro Bowl LT and what are the chances he faces both in the same year?

I'm just saying

There is a big difference between college and the pros.

Maybe Orkapo is the real deal, maybe he’s not. But the level of guys you play in college is different than what you play in the NFL. Look no further than Glenn Dorsey for that.

Jared Allen?

About the same size. Allen got up to about 270 but that is about the same size as Jared Allen when he started.

Indecision is the key to flexibility

I just dont think picking

a quarterback with our first pick is a good idea… If you ignore the two exceptions that were rookie quarterbacks this year, its too high of a bust factor.. i think we should get a quarterback who has proven themselves in the league. Or at least someone who comes in the later rounds

by WarChief on Jan 4, 2009 7:07 PM CST up reply actions

Proven QBs

Rarely hit the open market. And for good reason.

Someone who comes in the later rounds….I’m not down with settling for mediocrity anymore. We did that for the last 20…

I really hope they do not pick Stafford

I have been saying it for over a yr the guy is just not as good as everyone thinks. I would pick the OLB from Wake.

by TXroyal on Jan 2, 2009 12:34 PM CST reply actions

That's what everyone said about Ryan last year too

That he was overrated and just the best of a bad class. Hell, I said that 100 times myself.

We can’t be so afraid of drafting a bust that we don’t even try.

by ChiefDJ on Jan 2, 2009 1:21 PM CST up reply actions

But there are other better choices

I would rather have Bradford, Harrell, Nate Davis, Rhett Bomar, Tebow. there are to many to name. While all are not 1st round picks all are just as good or better in my opinion. I personally like Bomar and I seen a lot of his games down here in TX.

And Ryan had Turner to take the pressure off him. More than likely we will have a new RB to pair with a new QB, if they go that route.

Best QB in this draft is Sanchez...

assuming he comes out.

Proud to be a part of the Conference of Champions and their complete bowl game domination.

Wait

I thought we already did the QB with an injury history bit?

by Joel Thorman on Jan 3, 2009 3:34 PM CST up reply actions

i hope your not serious

if people can say bradford has too much talent around him, than what does that mean for sanchez? Do you really think he could be our number one pick?

by WarChief on Jan 4, 2009 7:12 PM CST up reply actions

I don't think he's the best

But I think he’ll be pretty darn good, and he’ll probably be around in Round 2. I think he’d be a great pickup.

stafford doesnt have the line or recievers bradford does nd hes dne good we have to get a defense so either orakpo curry laurinatis mauluaga im good with any of them 4

Maualuga or Orakpo

I’ve seen footage of Orakpo on ESPN and he’s a monster in the weight room. If his strength can be turned into NFL savvy then he’s ready to play in this league. And as much as Dorsey seems like a bust when evaluating d-line prospects, look at what the Rams got out of Chris Long: their tackle and sack leader. There are always players who make the most out of what they’re given. Orakpo is way more physical than Long and has a good first step. He can play ball. My only concern is him being from Texas where players often bust in the NFL.

Maualuga seems like a really secure choice who can step in and start and is from a much more stable system.

Alot depends on FA aquisitions before the draft. If the Chiefs land someone like Johnathan Vilma, than you can be sure that they’ll go with one of the many OT’s in the draft.

by mlschuma on Jan 3, 2009 11:02 AM CST reply actions

Yeah, I really

like Orakpo. He looks powerful and fast. If he does well today, he’s got me sold.

by ilamuku on Jan 5, 2009 2:13 PM CST up reply actions

My choice

Round 1 – DE or LB, depending on who is the best available.
Round 2 – DE or LB, whichever you didn’t take in Round one
Round 3 – WR
Round 4 – RT

DE/LB

One of the two can hopefully be addressed in free agency.

I’d be interested in drafting a guard/center/RT before a WR. WR seems like a lower priority at this point than the line.
