Shanahan to replace Herm Edwards?

via tbn1.google.com
Hey guys,
I was just watching NFL Network and Adam Schefter mentioned Shanahan as a potential candidate for head coach of the Chiefs. I'm a Saints fan first but I live in Wichita so I guess the Chiefs are my AFC team. This a little bit premature, but does Shanahan seem like a possibility? The GM would have to think so and young Mr. Hunt would too, but what better head coach is available right now? Shanny would have to give up control over the personnel and he may not want to do that. But overall, I think it's a great idea and the best choice for the Chiefs. What do you all think?
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Arrowhead Pride's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Arrowhead Pride writers or editors.

I think he would give up control
Because he wasn’t any good at it in Denver.
That said, I just can’t see this happening. I don’t know if rivalries spill over into the front offices but Shanahan was an enemy for 14 years.

I don't think it would be a problem
In fact it would fuel the Chiefs/Denver rivalry. That would end up being the biggest story coming into next season. The dude can draft and coach. I doubt it will go down, but how sweet would that be. I also saw that Elway’s name keeps popping up for front office there in Denver. Him and Bowlen own the Denver arena league together.

I Could Hypothetically See It Happening
And I wouldn’t have a problem with Shanahan as our coach, but every report I’ve seen says he wants to sit out until 2010 at least.
Herm Edwards will not be the Chiefs' head coach next season.

On paper I can see the sense of it, but my heart screams "NO!!!!!!!!!"
I know he’s an excellent coach, and no one doubts his ability to judge talent or get his boys to produce, but it would kinda be like electing Hitler as president, it just feels wrong…

He's Not Evil
He’s just a great coach who happened to coach for our division rival. And remember, the Broncos hired him after he was fired from the Raiders, and it turned out pretty well for them…just like it did for the Chargers when Marty went there :)

It might work.
He evaluates QB’s very well. He understands offensive blocking schemes. I think he would be a good coach for the Chiefs.

He's a Great Candidate
He’s a great candidate to be the next Cheifs’ head coach. It depends on the new GM. I suspect that a new GM will be named soon and that a new coach might be in the offing very quickly thereafter. Clark is keeping this thing pretty tight.
I don't fight extra players.

Elway didn’t win the big one until Shannahan was there.

ESPN’s John Clayton reports that fired Broncos coach Mike Shanahan is unlikely to return to the sidelines until “2010 or later.”
Clayton believes the Jets could land Shanahan, but they appear primed to pry Steve Spagnuolo away from the Giants. Shanny doesn’t want to coach up a rehab project like Detroit, St. Louis, or Kansas City, so there aren’t many great fits out there. If Shanahan stays idle and collects the money the Broncos still owe him this year, he, Bill Cowher, and Mike Holmgren will likely all be available in 2010. You couldn’t go wrong with any one of them.

Rehab project.... ouch
I think KC is the cream of the crap in that list at least… compared to Detroit and St. Louis.
I don’t think he’ll come to KC… now, or ever.

As crazy as it is
I’m not sure KC is ahead of Detroit or St Louis. All 3 were terrible this year, but Detroit has a few weapons on offense.

Not so fast.
I’ve been a Chiefs fan since 1988, but I live in St. Louis. I’ve watched both teams, and I don’t see a significant difference between the two teams. Detroit is in a different class of ineptitude, even with the talent they have.
Both teams have spent significant time at the bottom of the standings the last two years. Neither team has a sure-fire QB solution. Both teams have OLs that have fallen apart in the last few years, and both teams have spent a significant number of high draft picks trying to solve their D-Lines to little avail. At least KC has some good, young talent to grow with, and their front office isn’t in quite the flux that St. Louis’ is.
I’m not all that interested in bringing the master of the leg whip to KC. He has been completely incompetent at building a defense in Denver, which is what got him fired.

You could go wrong
simply by waiting until 2010. We need a REAL coach NOW.

Bad Idea
Shanahan is dried up (or at least in a dry spell, a very long dry spell). Perhaps a new team will give him a fresh perspective but the “mastermind” that won back to back super-bowls is not there. Watching the broncos fall apart at the end of the season for bad play calling too closely resembles the Chiefs in the second half of a game. We can do better, we don’t need that kind of taint from the donkeys.

totally agree
I think we should avoid going the familiar “old re-tread” coach route. Let’s get creative and find the next young up and comer.

Probably Not
Bowlen and Shanahan are still good friends.
In Bowlen’s press conference where he announced the firing, he said that he supported Shanahan going to another team, except the Kansas City Chiefs. Based on that, and the fact that other teams will be courting Shanahan, he doesn’t seem likely a likely candidate to land in KC.
I personally wouldn’t mind having Shanahan’s fingerprints on our offensive line, quarterback, or receiving corps, but I’m scared to death to let him touch the defense (as bad as it already is). Rex Ryan, Steve Spagnoulo, or Jim Schwartz are much more attractive candidates for KC in light of a coaching change.

No Kidding
I still believe fully he’s getting the axe, but the delay to get a GM in place is holding everything up.
I’m glad that Clark Hunt’s dedicated to finding a GM he really wants, but this has now been going on the better part of a month and if he waits too much longer he’s going to start missing out on the better coaching candidates as well. Denver’s going to be a very attractive destination for guys like Spagnuolo and Schwartz…so will Cleveland. If he doesn’t get a move on, he’s going to be picking from the second tier of candidates, and after this season I’m not really looking forward to seeing us overpay Jason Garrett.
Herm Edwards will not be the Chiefs' head coach next season.
