The End of the World as We Know It, & The PARADE Feels Fine
The PARADE's #1 reason to maintain a healthy level of Midwestern rage, while remaining guardedly optimistic: we're playing the Raiders at home. This would be #2, or a good gift for those no class Indy fans.
As for the game...
Well, that um, nope still in a state of shock.
Confusion, anger, despair, hope, concern?
Somehow the PARADE may have been more okay with a healthy Brady and Co. dominating the Chiefs 30-7.
This was just perplexing.
The PARADE is going to be a little honest with AP Nation, the PARADE hates our QB-centric league and coverage. Sure, it's one of if not the most important positions on the field, but the amount of time spent obsessing over it IS a little inordinate and maybe a little bit latently racist. Not to get all Whitlock(y) but you think Stetson's is gonna pick up Glenn Dorsey to replace Tom Brady? The PARADE is actually far more concerned about Dwayne No-Show getting hit in the hands, not focusing and choking in a clutch situation while healthy than our current QB vacuum.
That said, Brodie Croyle has failed the PARADE, and lost it's patient support.

We shall return to Mr. Glass later.
Seriously, this talk of Bowe being heavier, is that the weight room or is it like: "Oh, I’m in shape! I’m round!" - [Damon Wayans, as James"The Grim Reaper" Roper in The Great White Hype]?
Answers? Thank you traditional media.
And here's a legit reason to be pleased: Brandon Albert is awesome. No joke. Awesome. Long live B.A.
Also, our defense? Left out there for way too long and held N.E. to 17, sure, blame it on Matt Cassel, but Cassel looked alright to me, that is after he gave up those two mystery safeties.
So there's the good news.
The really bad news. LJ got stuffed for the most part, and we forgot to replace Damon Huard (which ironically is the best and worst move of ours this offseason).
In Huard we have the best over the hill back-up in football. It's like putting a precision scope on backwards on a million dollar .50 caliber sniper rifle purchased yesterday. Yeah, I guess it'll work alright, but we've got a major problem with no quick fix.
I mean who knows how we'll feel by the time of the BC "comeback," but Croyle's gonna need a hell of a rehab or else start up a vicodin addiction.
Also, I don't buy this Greg Cook whistful baseball(y) Posnanski comparison. You know what Elway did when he realized he was gonna have to retire without winning a Super Bowl? He put on 30 lbs. of muscle. This is football, it involves the barbaric destruction of the human body in a dehumanizing fashion, you either train for that or you get destroyed. What Posnanski is talking about is a bad M. Night Shyamalan plot device.
For those of you unfamilar to the admittedly terrible film "Unbreakable" here's a hint as to Samuel L. Jackson's character.
But I'm sorry it's not like this just happens because some people are "naturally" more inclined to survive (or eventually pay a horrible price for) the NFL's violent nature:
via i.a.cnn.net
So ultimately I guess the PARADE says this: be joyous, the liklihood of us going 4-12 is less after last weeks game (not mathematically, but holistically) and the Brodie Croyle question is essentially solved.
Now if we could just get a young QB without the Leinart/Quinn d-bag, scrub disease the PARADE would be pleased.
LJ for Matt Ryan? After 1 week, na, and the Falcons would never go for it, but something to think about.

Well
we could always hope for a crappy season just for the possibility of drafting a 1st rate quarterback! I’m also saying good bye to my hopes for a successful Croyle. Any QB’s coming into the NFL this coming up draft you’d like to see us grab?

I agree Croyle is breakable.
But as I happened upon last night, I’m starting to wonder if any quarterback could stay healthy in our system. Seriously. Name me a quarterback who could succeed or stay healthy in our death sentence of an offensive scheme with that line?

How many games
did Huard miss due to injury? I don’t remember. I thought the Denver game last year he was just knocked out for the game (can’t quite remember exactly, though).
A QB who could succeed in our system? Most competent starters in the league could in my opinion. This isn’t the worst offensive line. Taking 4 sacks isn’t unusual in an NFL game.

That's my point
The line is no longer an excuse. This wasn’t the heyday of Turley Terry expressway with no threat from LJ. Maybe the Pats game was a fluke of an injury, maybe the Pats hit harder, but generally I don’t put that on our line. Croyle had some time in the pocket, and I’ll give it to him, he’s got guts for standing in the pocket while it was collapsing, but bottom line: This was game #1, the sun was shining, and you’ve had all off-season to prepare for that hit.
As for our scheme, I think it worked pretty well, and we ran it a hell of lot even when we were getting nothing.

Don't worry Parade
I’ve seen the light. I’ve come around. We’re saved.
Damon has returned to us. I’ve come to understand that Huard didn’t miss games because of injury. He missed games due to stupid Carl Peterson and his stupid fascination with young quarterbacks who could possibly be good.
There’s no need for that! We have the savior in front of us!
Look, we gave Croyle time. We gave him this entire season up till now to be good. He played three quarters and failed. It’s pretty clear that his time is up. I mean, we were patient for three whole quarters! What else are we supposed to do?
But luckily for us, the whelp is injured. Now Damon can return to his glory.

re:
I would fear for any quarterback who had to go through with your plan. Get signed on a Tuesday and start on a Sunday.

Agreed
Good points, Parade.

Consult the archives for my feelings on Huard
The PARADE has been a stout Brodie apologist for well over a year now. The PARADE granted that it might be a fluke (doubtful). The PARADE made no statement about how Brodie played for those quarters (if anything the PARADE complemented BC for stepping up in the pocket). BUT a youthful NFL starter needs to make it more than 3 quarters into the season.
Is Brodie going to come back and win 13/12 games? Is he going to win 75% of his remaining games and go 8-8?
If LJ had gone down we’d be calling for his head.
Fine, Brodie’s not buried, but the Pats D dug him a six foot hole if he feels like lying down.

Fair Enough
I can understand if some think he hasn’t quite taken himself out of the running. But I also think that most of the people who were supporting Croyle have been sane enough to realize that if he can’t stay healthy it doesn’t matter how much potential he has, so I don’t think those peoples’ position is unreasonable.

Totally agree
if Brodie can’t stay healthy, he’s done. If he comes back from this and gets hurt in the first game? He doesn’t get another shot. But his shot should go to anyone but Huard. I’m even okay with the Huard/Thigpen idea as a compromise. But this “let’s go with the player who makes the smart decision and throws for more INTs than TDs” is as weak a premise as “Croyle is awesome, I don’t care what the stats say.” It’s true, Croyle has sucked. But the gap between them is very close.
I realized this morning that essentially we’ve been arguing for two days about who sucks more. That’s it. Can’t we both just agree we should just find a QB who doesn’t suck?

LJ For Ryan Comment
Why on earth would the Falcons even consider trading for LJ when Michael Turner just went off for over 220 yards? Plus, I’m still not sold on Ryan as a QB…hell, even Matt Leinart had a 400 yard game passing against the 2006 Bears. Get back to me on Ryan when he throws a few more decent games against defenses more impressive than Detroit’s.

re: Leinart
Those are some crazy numbers from that game. 31/51 405 1 and 2 and over 60%

Vadlid Points Both...
And it was against Detroit, and the PARADE is pretty sure the Atl front office is invested in the Matt Ryan of the future.

Please don't bring up Ryan
watching that kid sling the ball AND make smart decisions was enough to bring me to the bottle. The whole foot between me and it.
