the playcalling

First off I just want to say Congrats for the Chiefs holding their own today against the big bad pats..

But on to the playcalling, im sorry but werent we suppose to open up our "vanilla" playbook this week and hit them with something there not expecting. I saw the some of the same plays over and over, I watched T.G. go in motion and L.J. run to his side atleast 6 times and it was about a two yard gain We ran the ball on almost every first down play and I know were going to be a run first offense but why didnt we hit them with a playaction and throw a bomb downfield Hell atleast try it once it was pretty obvious we were trying to grind it out...I forgot where I read it but I thought Chan was suppose to be good at adjusting at the half.....I didnt see too much of a change. the only time I saw a change was when Huard was brought in, THEN they finally took some shots downfield, WHAT happened to the bootlegs that worked pretty decent in preseason for Croyle. I would have liked to see a screen for charles or maybe a few more pitches to him to see what he could do, but he still had a good game for limited touches

I do realize it is a new team and new system and new O.C. and maybe we did try and keep it simple for week one, let the players try to execute, but if not I dont like what I saw from our offense, dont get me wrong we were decent against a SuperBowl D.

But BIG ups to our D for really keeping us in the game!!!!!

As for Croyle I feel bad for the guy, alot of people already want to write him off, I think Herm and Chan or somebody behind the scenes have it embedded in Croyles head "dont take a chance" yes we can win more games if Croyle can manage them which means more check-down passes and throws out of bounds. If we want to see what Croyles made of hes gonna have to take some chances we cant just keep telling him to manage the game, he needs a little bit more freedom, yes he can make audibles which is great... but thats not good enough. Maybes it me but I just dont really think KC is taking advantage of the arm this kid has,

did anyone else see D-mac getting burned on almost everyplay, thank god he wasnt our LT Croyle would have been out for the season. Does anyone else think we should put in Herb on the right side and see if he gels with the starters D-mac cant have to much left in his tank anyway and hes injury prone.

Im not trying to be negative just a little bit of what i thought we could do different

what do you yall think?

first post GO CHIEFS!!!!!

I am afraid to admit it

but LJ just doesn’t look like the same guy that would create his own holes two years ago. Every carry I just pleaded with him through the tv to make something happen and it never did. It’s a little depressing.

As for the playcalling I think it was predictable but that in itself is what Chan Gailey is all about I think. Soon enough, teams will KNOW when we’re gonna run and it won’t matter. We are working to build that confidence in the line. Albert looked good and honestly I didn’t have a problem with the much maligned Adrian Jones. McIntosh just isn’t the answer at right tackle and I think Herb needs to get an opportunity. LJ just can’t have a 3 ypc avg all year.

Two years ago and LJ

We had two future Hall of Famers on the line. Brian Waters was a Pro Bowler. Casey Wiegmann was in his prime.

It was the line that was good. LJ just benefitted from it.

Sure helps

to have Willie Roaf and Will Shields, dont it

I strive to be the person my dog thinks I am.

I agree

The play caling was shocking to say the least. Zero creativity, provided zero opportunity. We were right back to the defense knowing exactly what to key on. I don’t blame Larry, I think he is still a great back and works his heart out, but if there are linebackers and corners keying on you, you just can’t get it done. I wanted to scream at the play calling!

Congratulations to the all of our rookies, the D for their efforts, TG, and most of the O-Line. They held up and played well against a powerhouse team. If not for a few dropped balls….we would be just as good as they are, on this Sunday. Nearly every player completely stepped up and held their own.

I believe we lost due to the coaching and nothing else.

LJ for 30 runs into a wall

I for one think the playcalling was VERY reminiscient of Solari—-Run on first down. run on second and then drop and try and complete a pass on 3rd and 5-7. Man, I could have played d-coord against the chiefs—-they are WAY too predictible. I thought the d did an incredible job considering the inept offense once again. There were 2 passes down the field for more than 10 yards that I could count. One went for an int which was a bad pass into double coverage. The second was for 70 yards. Then we forgot how to throw again and had an atrocious set of downs from the 5. Croyle wont last the season—-a guy landed on him and he sep his shoulder—I thought he was hit much harder earlier in the game.

Right tackle

IMO they need to start taylor at right tackle and work richardson in behind him . Why was richardson inactive? Is he hurt? He can’t learn being inactive. I hate the 47 rule.

Anything!

MacIntosh licks the cat’s ass.

by Ochophosphate on Sep 8, 2008 12:39 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

he couldn't block

a LB in a 3-4 if you gave him a net to throw at the guy…McIntosh is no better than Richardson, and has NO upside…put Teddy Barry in and let him develop.

yes

I would have to go back through and see how many times, but I know I remember seeing him get totally turnstyled early in the game and let a defender run clean through. He just wasn’t quick enough to handle it. He got one shove in and then couldn’t recover. I don’t recall if it was an OLB or DE, but it was poor blocking for sure.

WR depth

might have something to do with the play calling. The Chiefs entered the game with only 3 healthy WR. Its prob rough on the wr if you run them out there without getting much of a breather. Add that to Hermyball and you have run, run and more run plays.

They could have tried other things though.

Put Cottam in at TE and move out Tony. If Charles can catch put him out wide and send him deep. It would stretch the coverage underneath for the other at least.

Still

The playcalling was unforgivable. Our young guys hung in there (especially our D) and tried to give us a chance to win, but ol’ Herm decided to keep the handcuffs on. At the start of the game, you could tell LJ was back to his old self, but as the game wore on you could tell that he seemed to slip into his 07 running style. Maybe LJ was as excited as we were to finally have some decent playcalling until he found out that Chan (or whoever was calling the plays, possibly Herm) was just as inept as last year. I know I would lose a lot of enthusiasm running for a coach who shouldn’t be in the NFL.

Only the best O-Lines in the NFL can line up from another team and say “we are going to run the ball” and do it despite any adjustments. The rest of the teams in the NFL run the ball by using the element of suprise (possibly PA on first down?) to keep the defense guessing. Sorry Herm, but this isn’t highschool, and last time I checked our o-line was a heck of a lot closer to being bottom three as opposed to top three in the league.

Unfortunately, Herm is a classy guy and would never leave our team ala Bobby Petrino which means we will either have to hope that Herm has an epiphany tonight, or just have to dig in and suffer from vanilla playcalling until Carl gets the idea.

They're in practice every day

So maybe there’s a reason they’re keeping the handcuffs on.

Maybe it’s Croyle.

by Joel Thorman on Sep 8, 2008 5:09 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Very True

That’s whats so frustrating is that we can never really know what is going on because we aren’t (or at least I’m not) at the practices and we can’t see what is going on. It is just frustrating to watch your team go three-and-out 80% of the game (estimated stat).

Last year, when our offense reached the pinnacle of terrible, I said to my stepdad that at this point I would be perfectly ok seeing an interception as long as it is downfield. I would rather turn the ball over taking a shot down field instead of going three and out and maintaining field position. So, when Huey threw his pick yesterday I held myself from being too frustrated because atleast he was trying to move the ball. Just my opinion about the INT, but the point is that we as an offense seriously need to move the ball on a consistent basis so that a)we can win some games, and b) chiefs fan (maybe just me I suppose) don’t have to feel as though a pick is a good thing, which it never is.

Just my thoughts.

Also if they are going to run it every time I say

break out the wing t. Maybe the wishbone. Shoot go all the way and put Charles in at qb and run the option. Maybe that will at least catch a team off guard.

I seriously doubt that the play calling

was all that different especially on pass plays. I will wager that the pass calls were essentially the same for both quarterbacks. Huard ends up looking better because he probably surveys the field better than Croyle, and Croyle is so obsessed with NOT turning the ball over, he won’t look downfield.

by sm7600 on Sep 8, 2008 9:38 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

"Croyle is so obsessed with NOT turning the ball over"

Perhaps if Huard were equally obsessed, we might be 1-0 right now. =)
  I agree with you, I’m just sayin’…

by PVChiefsfan on Sep 8, 2008 10:05 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah, and I realize that

BUT…it wasn’t like they didn’t have another chance to score afterward

by sm7600 on Sep 8, 2008 10:44 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

The contrary

If anything, I think Huard’s earned a reputation around the league for NOT turning the ball over.
