Here's what I don't get
We let Huard improvize more, even though he has fewer physical tools. We control Brodie more, even though he has more. I just want an explanation. I know they can’t give one, but I really just want to talk to Herm and have him say "Well, Brodie has a disease that causes him to fumble on rollouts

i think the main reason
that drive just worked, was the newfound success of the run game. i think we’re giving damon a little too much credit there…its not like he completed a pass over 13 yards on that drive

Dwayne Bowe
is ridiculously good. I can’t wait till we have a QB to throw to him.
by Ridiculous Matt on Sep 7, 2008 2:07 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I'm telling you
I can totally see Huard leading this team to a victory, we start like last year, and end up right back where we were last year.

But with improvement
And another top 10 pick to snag a QB.

Tebow
would be a bad, bad, bad pick.
He will suck in the pros. He’d suck in college if a team could force him to pass, like ECU did to WVU yesterday or Michigan did to Florida last year. He can’t pass his way back in to a game, he needs to be able to threaten with the runs and options.

I'm not throwing Brodie under the bus.
He wasn’t given the chance to throw it down field all game or to improvise. He was useless to us if we weren’t going to give him the opportunity to open it up.

We got no pressure on Cassell and Brodie wasn’t given any chances to open it up in the short amount of time he was in there. And he got hurt.
Maybe restricting Brodie kept us in the game, but it sure doesn’t make me feel confident about how our coaches feel about him.

I wonder
if that’s why Huard plays better in this system. He doesn’t have the arm strength or tangibles to do any of the things big play QBs do, and that’s perfect for Herm. It makes you wonder what kind of QB IS perfect for this system.
That said, I’m pretty happy with this effort.

Wow.
Still a great game overall, one where our D played damn awesome. Seriously. Besides that one 100 yard drive, our D played incredible. We have a good looking D on our hands.
Looking back on it in two days, if not just 2 hours, I think we will all be more than pleased with our performance.
But to lose that way, where we only had to pick up 5 yards in 4 plays, it really sucks right now. Oh, I am so pissed right now.
by rockchalk on Sep 7, 2008 2:54 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I'm not as happy about our D as you are.
We got no pressure whatsoever on Cassell and our D-Line got thrown around like rag dolls. We were really poor at blitzing.
I understand we didn’t give up 57 points, and our defense did not look poor, but I don’t think it is something to call “damn awesome.”

17 points
Brady to 76 yards and no TD’s
No RB over 60 yards
We only had one interception thrown
We didnt fumle the ball away
We had two sacks
WENT INTO NEW ENGLAND PLAYING A FOURTH OF OUR TEAM AS ROOKIES AND ONLY LOST IN THE LAST MINUTE BY 7 POINTS…
I think we did well

+1.
If we could have just scored a TD there at the end of the game, I would be completely and positively happy about this game. I wouldn’t even had really cared had New England got the ball and drove the ball down the field and scored (I would have watching it live, of course, and would have yelled profusely, without a doubt, but I would be much happier than I am now).
Even with the failure at the end, it was still an overall success, IMO.

I am disgusted....
…at the playcalling all game long…how many 1st downs did we run straight up the gut!?!?!?!?!? and like 2 play-action attempts the whole game?!?!?!?! it was awful…
Brady was out and we still did nothing…the defense is old and slow…the secondary all inexperienced….still NOTHING!?
The offense…or more accurately, whoever was determining those calls….needs fired right now…just for the rarity of Play-Action alone…
by woodman212 on Sep 7, 2008 3:00 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
A large part of the running
was that we were trying to shorten the game as much as we could. I didn’t read anything that specifically had to do with it, but you got the feeling that we were trying to keep the clock moving as much as possible, and the easiest way to do that is to run the ball. I didn’t mind our first down runs, actually…
by rockchalk on Sep 7, 2008 3:03 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs

I agree that we should have used the play action more.
Without a doubt.
I’m just saying why we ran so often. I agree, though, it would have been awesome if, at least once or twice, we would have done play action on a 1st down and ran D-Bowe downfield and have Croyle chuck it downwards. We needed one big play to get back in the game (which we got with the DVD catch-and-run, but our failure at the goalline rendered it useless).

Agree on LJ.
After I was done screaming my head off because of DVD’s catch-and-run, which took awhile, I calmly said that we would, clearly, go with this running back named Larry Johnson four consecutive times, and we would assuredly score.
I didn’t mind the fade to D-Bo on first down, it was a good play and usually The Show is money in the bank, he just dropped this one. But after that, it should have been three consecutive LJ runs up the middle, with the only exception if it was 4th-and-more-than-5. I trust LJ a helluva lot more than Damon in that situation, even if they were playing the run. And we had more than enough time.
Ugh.
by rockchalk on Sep 7, 2008 3:01 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
No....
I didnt want them to run LJ once…It was under a minute with no TO’s are you kidding?! I was sure they would do Play Action to Tony or D-Bo when they even put him in…
HORRIBLE….
by woodman212 on Sep 7, 2008 3:02 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
You are flat-out wrong.
First off, 0:53 is more than enough time to run the ball with zero TDs, as you should still have 0:25 seconds or so to run some more passes. An incompletion stops the clock, obviously, and as long as you don’t get sacked you have more than enough time to throw three balls up in the endzone.
Secondly, we had a TO left going into the goal-to-go situation, and we used it AFTER the LJ run. And, running and calling timeout afterward, we turned the ball over with 0:37 left on the clock. We had more than enough time to get at least one more run off.
Why we didn’t was idiotic.

Herm definitely has some positives, but he needs to hire some clock genius (there has to exist someone out there who considers this their title, right?) and have him planted squarely at his side in similar situations.
Herm is just absolutely awful in the end.

This...is flat out wrong, sir...
“it should have been three consecutive LJ runs up the middle”
one run is excusable…but dumb given the history of running in that game…

By the way
Scott Fujita just made the game winning INT for New Orleans. I miss that guy.
by Ridiculous Matt on Sep 7, 2008 3:08 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
hah i saw that
that was just brutal coaching. We have a top 3 running back and 5 yards out we run him once? Thats just stupid. Plain and simple. As for running on first down, I am fine with that . However, it is the running on second down that really frustrates me, especially after we only gain 3 yards on our first play. Want to know why we can’t run the ball? Because I can go 90% when guessing our playcalling. Try this at home; right down your guess, and see what you end up with. This is ridiculous. Who ever is resposible for the playcalling should be fired. Bottom line. I don’t care if it is just the first game, we could have won, but we lost because of our coaching alone.
by Ben S on Sep 7, 2008 3:15 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I agree....
that has made me rethink it some…It was so predictable it was like last season all over again…Where is our offense from the Chicago game?!?!?!?!? seriously?!?!?! Run first down, whatever….but every first and second was either a run or a quick pass it seemed like….we werent outplayed but I think scott linehan could have outcoached us on that one…
