Chiefs and Patriots Friday Primer

All the news that fit to post...

  • I had a clip embedded above in which Mike Reiss of The Boston Globe says the Patriots may have trouble with the Kansas City Chiefs running game. It was acting funny so I posted it after the jump.

  • Definitely check out this post from Pats Pulpit linking up yesterday's news.

  • Kolby Smith is listed on the injury report as not participating in practice with a back issue but I haven't heard any details on that injury. Today is the day we find out the more specific injury listings - probable, questionable, doubtful or out - and we'll know what we're dealing with. H/T to Eric in the FanShot section for that one.

  • Kent Babb makes Tamba Hali sound more competitive than I ever knew he was. Interesting picture with that article too.

  • More keys to the game from Double D at Arrowhead Addict.

  • Over at The Red Zone , Randy Covitz talks about a possible San Diego Charger blackout this weekend. He says, "There's little question the Fox affiliate in San Diego will buy out the remaining seats because this is one of just two Chargers games it can televise this season." How terrible are your fans when your team is very successful and people still won't watch? At least Rams fans ride the bandwagon.

  • The kick returner position has not been settled on yet - "B.J. Sams said after practice that neither he nor Dantrell Savage has been told which player will return punts and kickoffs in New England. Both have been working at each position this week in practice."

  • Karen Guregian of The Boston Herald asks some good questions about Sunday's game: "Will Chiefs coach Herm Edwards really have second-round pick Brandon Flowers cover Randy Moss?" and "How will first-round pick Branden Albert, who missed the preseason with a sprained foot, attempt to hold off Richard Seymour?

Those potential matchups are definitely worth discussing this morning. Surtain on Randy Moss? Or Flowers on him?

  • Let me throw out a reminder about the open thread on Sunday during the game. If you can't watch the game, watch it at home with the computer on anyway or just want to talk about the Chiefs come on by.

Wow...the last Friday of the off-season. Can you feel it? The long wait is almost over. The over saturation of media has Patriots fans wondering what the Chiefs can do to win this game. You gotta love this, right?

To get the conversation started, what individual matchups do you like and dislike this weekend against the Patriots? Yes, I know there are probably many. That Boston Herald article really got me thinking - No matter who the Chiefs put on Randy Moss, he's going to about five times as talented as they are. Of course I knew this already but Moss' potential for damage is massive this game.

Thoughts on the best and worst matchups for the Chiefs?

Moss

Put Flowers on him…hell, Put Carr on him, just please don’t have Surtain playing 10-yds off of Moss so he can catch 8 yd slants and turn them into 25 yd. completions all day. I have never understood why Surtain and Law played so far off the WR’s when we are in the Cover 2 – aren’t the CB’s supposed to try and jam the receivers and let the safeties worry about the deep balls? How do you jam the guy from the third row?

As far as positive match-ups, I like our short passing game (Cox, Charles, even Gonzalez and Cottam) against their LB’s… I also like Bowe against Hobbs – Bowe is at least 5 inches taller and probably 25 lbs. heavier…

I have confidence in Flowers

So I’m with you, PV! Will Flowers get beat? Did Moss beat any other CBs last year? Like 23 times, just counting the plays that finished in the end zone. But after the first few plays in which Flowers gets the “I can’t believe I’m playing against Randy Moss” script out of his head, Flowers will do great. Any corner is going to need help over the top. But after the preseason, will Flowers be expecting the first play to be a deep throw to Moss? You bet! Flowers will give him the out route on the first play, but not the out and up. Dittos on your other match-ups, too, PV.

I also like out blitzing LBs and CBs against their O line. And maybe even flashes of our O line against their less than stellar run defense. Flashes. A couple gaping holes. A couple.

Moss hates getting jammed

off the line. I’d love to see Flowers jam him every play. Better have a safety ready to cover though, because I think Moss is faster than any of our DBs.

Patriots LCB

The Patriots appear to be starting a rookie (Terrance Wheatley) at LCB. Along with Flowers, I think these are the only rookie CBs starting on opening day.

My answer to that?

Line Gonzalez up at WR and watch him abuse Wheatley =)

Matt Ligtht vs Tamba

The giants owned him in the Super Bowl. If Dorsey is penetrating we should see a big day from Tamba

I like the match up of Tony G. with Rondney Harrison

Plus the right side of the field with a rookie corner, or Deltha vs. Tony and D-Bowe Show.
We can create alot of problems with the coverage. Secondary is short and still alittle unfamiliar with their coverage scheme’s.

The worst match up is with Flowers vs Moss (that sounded strange)
5-9 against 6-4
 4.3 speed against 4.5
seasoned veteran vs rookie.

Just play our defense, don’t do specific match ups. Like move Surtain where ever Moss lines up (plus thats a dead give away that were playing man up) but have the Pollard double up when Moss lines up on Flowers side, and provide cover on top so Flowers can do the underneath stuff.

That's true

But if Flowers is ever going to become one of the premiere CBs in the league like many think he will, he’s going to have to learn how to make due with his physical limitations. I thought he did excellent against Arizonas two fantastic WRs. I hope they stick Flowers on Moss the whole game. Let’s see what the young guys got.

Darrell Green is in the Hall of Fame...

Darrell is 5-8, I believe he’s even shorter than Flowers, but boy had the fastest time in the NFL, and even when he got older he never lost that speed.
The height factor will play a part, but won’t be a difference maker I think on the success of Flowers shutting down Moss.
I’m confident that the Cover 2 scheme will only help mask some of Flowers limitations physically by not exposing his lack of speed & height. What I’m trying to get at is don’t put Flowers on an island just yet. Let him build up his confidence. Before asking him to grow up all at once. This is Randy Moss. You can’t expect the guy be beaten and abused by one of the NFL’s premier WR, and not have any those lingering effects on his psyche. Too early in the season for that. Just play within the scheme and let the coverage do it work.

Friday's injury report is out

Napoleon Harris is Out with a knee injury. That must have just happened today. He wasn’t on any previous list. I’m not sure if that has much impact on the game. Kolby came off the list – good. Price and Franklin still Questionable.

Any idea who backs up Pat Thomas

with Napoleon out? Would we move Donnie to the middle and put Demorrio outside?

by WolfFan on Sep 5, 2008 3:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Just let Pollard

Get one clean shot on Moss, see how he feels after that!

What about Carr?

Flowers has been very impressive, in fact, I think our corner position is one of the improved positions so far over last year. But I am curious if Carr wouldn’t be a better match up against Moss. He may not have the speed ( not sure?) but he is much bigger that Flowers and he could possibly match up better? I would like to see it.

by TheQ on Sep 5, 2008 6:00 PM CDT reply actions

He could probably hang with Moss for the most part

but that is a big jump; going from covering some guy from NW Missouri State to covering the guy who caught 23 TD’s last season…yikes.
