Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

"We wish we could have got him the record, too," Edwards said. "But the game, the way it unfolded at the end, we really couldn’t afford to throw a pass. You can’t throw a pass when you only lead by one score. What if something bad happens when you decide to throw that pass?"

maybe…but maybe you could have taken a slight chance and thrown the guy a little 3 yard pass. Tony deserved to get this in front of the Chief’s crowd and we deserved it as fans. But at least when he broke the TD record last year it was in Arrowhead.

Don't buy it

The risk about throwing a 3 yard pass is about the same as running the ball. I doubt that the Broncos were going to triple team Gonzalez when the Chiefs were winning by two scores and were trying to run out the clock. I really just think this is pretty bush league and once again shows that Herm doesn’t know how to manage the game. Can you think of a better way for that game to end? It was already pretty jacked in there and that would have made it go crazy. Even i knew he was close (I was at the game) and i didn’t have anyway to know other than guessing how many yards he had and how many he needed. Tony doesn’t speak out unless he is really pissed and this is not a good way to treat him. I really disliked Herm before this and this certainly doesn’t help

No, it is not…did you see the Cardinals game? Warner threw a check-down pass that went for 6 points the other way. i am actually surprised that Gonzalez said anything…would it have been nice? Yeah. Was a win nicer? yeah.

Agreed

at that point in the game, the clock, not the yardage, is your enemy. You definitely don’t want to add risk. What was it Darrell Royal said? When you throw the ball only three things can happen, and two of them are bad….

1st and goal at the 9

When we had that with 1:55 left to play I felt they should have run a play to tony in the back of the end zone over the middle. And the instructions to Huard should have been if it is there get it to Tony and if not throw it away.

How many times in his career has Tony gone up and grabbed the pass when everyone in the stadium knew that they would be trying to get him the ball. I think it would have been good for Tony and good for the fans. Imagine not only getting the win but being able to see the only chief player who has ever been the best player at his position break that record at home in the first win this year against a hated opponent.

It would have been nice

but I would rather have the win. If the Chiefs were in a 3rd down situation, they would have thrown it to Tony. But LJ took care of that for them by busting out two big runs. They got up by 2 scores, and then Denver had the ball the rest of the way.

Pass Tony the ball - he deserved it

LJ fumbled earlier in the game, that didn’t stop us from handing it to him every play.

by CBaller13 on Sep 30, 2008 10:31 AM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

In the first few possessions of the

game, the Chiefs scored six points on field goals and missed another. The Chiefs should have had 21 points at that time instead of 6. Had they done so, the score at the end of the game would not have been so close. As it was, Herm should have risked a short thee yard pass to Tony. Tony deserved it. He is the greatest to ever play the game. He will probably never wear a championship ring from all his years in K.C. He also has the best hands of any tight end to ever play the game. Why not throw him the ball and make a statement to his young team. Instead Herm just comes off looking like the paranoid fool that he is.

Lets see

19 + 7 = 33

Nope, still doesn’t compute.

have you seen my baseball?

by IISaiNtII on Sep 30, 2008 2:48 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

We didn't have 33

We had 26. Remember LJ running that touchdown in at the end? 26-19 = 7 A tipped pass or a sack on Huard and a fumble and we could easily have ended up losing that game.

You CANNOT take chances with the state this team is in right now. I love Tony G as much as anyone else and I completely understand his disappointment on a personal level. But this team needed this win more than anything imaginable and to risk throwing it away because of a personal record that would have been really special for about a day and then forgotten is irresponsible.

Imagine how crushed this fragile team would have been to have played so hard the enitre game only to blow it at the end to try to force one players personal goals. That is exactly the wrong message to send to this team.

by ChiefDJ on Sep 30, 2008 3:11 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

You know what was irresponsible.....

was the chiefs having to punt the ball in the closing minutes of the 2nd Qtr., and allowing the big reception that led to the late FG that narrowed the advantage to 13-10.

My question was that why wasen’t Tony more involved in the gameplan? Tony may have sounded selfish, yeah….But he has never complained before…Come on…throw the guy a 3 yard pass to get the record. They could of designed it with trips right and have Tony catch it in the flat and let him earn those 3 yards. A short out route in the flat is nothing more than an extended hand off.

Why Do So Many People Insist On Complaining About This?

Herm was protecting a lead and if he’d let the Broncos back into the game with a pick-6 and an onside kick recovery from Denver it would very possibly have cost him his job. It’s not like he didn’t already have one major blunder to explain with that idiotic challenge on LJ’s fumble. He needed to secure the win above all else.

Would we have preferred to see Tony get the record in front of the home crowd? Absolutely. Should Herm have attempted to get that record if it increased even slightly the chance that the Chiefs blow that game? Hell no. And I’ll admit it, if Herm had tried to get Tony G. the record and it had backfired, I’d be the first one screaming about his incompetence and calling for his head. He made the right call as head coach.

Supporting the lesser of two evils is still supporting something evil.

Point of order.
“It’s not like he didn’t already have one major blunder to explain with that idiotic challenge on LJ’s fumble.”

He wasn’t challenging whether or not LJ fumbled. He was challenging whether or not LJ had actually recovered his own fumble.

And it was a big play

So I’m not so upset about that.

Also, the guys in the booth are the ones that tell Herm whether or not to challenge the play.

I...

am not solely blaming Herm. Tony may partially be to blame, and Huard as well as Gailey. I won’t ever say Tony doesn’t try hard enough… Just seems like 3 yards short is awfully petty. But, the run was working and there was no reason to deviate from it.

I just don’t like seeing him disappointed in yet another thing the organization has done. Regardless of who is right.

Come on

We’re trying to win a game. I doubt there’s a single coach in the NFL that would put the ball in the air there.

Now, if you want to say he should have been getting the ball earlier I would absolutely agree.

Every yard Tony gains

The rest of the season will be a new record. So the next home game, he will still be setting new records.

Spin, anyone?

Once an example of a class organization in the NFL, they KC Chiefs showed again their decline.

The question is not do you pass the ball with two minutes to go in the game. The question is not whether the win is more or less important than one man. Arguably, one of the greatest Chiefs to ever play for this organization should have had the opportunity to share his recording breaking catch with the Chief Nation much earlier in the game.

Let us not make more of this one win than what it truly is. One of a few we will experience this season. This is a team of young talent that will do many things to amaze us as well as disappoint us. This one win will not propel us into the playoffs or dare to mention the Super Bowl. This organization had a chance to show they are still one of the class franchises in the NFL despite its won/loss record…they chose not to do so.

Let’s not be naive, Tony Gonzalez is a very well paid player in the Nation Football League. He also had the opportunity to be paid as much if not more by other teams who have a much better chance of playing in the Super Bowl than our Chiefs. He stayed with the Chiefs fans and the Kansas City Chief organization. He stayed HERE. One man, one team, one career is such a rarity in this day and age of sport.

That moment, when Tony breaks the record, he will raise himself to his feet and hold the ball high in the air, and share his moment with millions of Chiefs fans and the lucky few fans that will be at Bank of America Stadium in North Carolina.

Agree or disagree, it does not change the fact that the moment will never present itself again at Arrowhead Stadium. I’m sure the Chiefs organization will make some feeble attempt to present Tony with a token of their appreciation for his accomplishment. It will fail miserably compared to the moment that never was at Arrowhead. They chose not to do so.

BRAVO....extremely well said....Bravo...

Tony deserves better than what he has had to endure while being in KC. The man is a class act.

A simple trips right with Tony cutting underneath into the flat, or a simple wheel route out of the backfield is nothing more than an extended handoff. Get the ball to him as soon as possible and let him earn the needed 3 yards on his own. There could have been safer alternatives to give him a chance…..the point is give him a chance.

There are moments in life that certain occasions only present themselves through a small window of opportunity . Some so rare that they only come around once in a lifetime. How many records are set in a losing effort? Imagine, if Tony beats the record in front of the home crowd in a win against an undefeated rival who have only taughnted us with crushing defeat after defeat, and now you break the record of one their former players with a decisive victory. How sweet would that have been? How Sweet?

Play to win the game

If you are playing to win the game, how do you go through the entire 1st half without your best player touching the ball one time? Add to that, the best team-player was that close to the career record, and he goes the entire 1st half without touching the ball. That’s poor coaching. I have supported Herm through his 12 game losing streak, but he lost my respect with his 1st victory.
