What to expect from Sunday...
We all know everyone is excited for the 2008 Chiefs season, no matter how dismal some people have predicted it to be. The is what separates the fans from the die-hards is the continual support that those show no matter the outcome of the season.
It's been a real roller coaster of an off-season this year and I'm really excited to get back into the Red and Gold. I live in St. Louis so I have to deal with an endless barrage of how great the 99 Rams were. It's odd to see how far we've come in a mere 7 months. Just like the Rams of 99, no one cares about last year. Our progression is dependent on this year's success; that being said I can personally guarantee that we are better than we were last year.
There is something about the swagger that young players bring in. The speed of their game is quicker and their drive greatly dwarves that of Chris Terry or Samie Parker. We finally have a class of young and determined players ready to come in and take care of business. That being said I would like to make some predictions of Sunday's upcoming game; however, I will not make an attempt to guess the score because that is exactly what it is a simple guess... Anything could happen.
1. Dwayne Bowe and Brodie Croyle are going to connect for a long reception in the first quarter.
2. Jamaal Charles is going to break two ten yard runs thanks to great blocking from Mike Cox.
3. Bonecrusher is going to stick Laurence Maroney thanks to Tank and Glenn forcing Maroney to cut outside.
4. Brandon Flowers is going to get worked by Randy Moss, but will eventually hold his own in the second half.
5. Tamba Hali, Turk McBride, and Derrick Johnson will get around the corner and sack Tom Brady or Matt Cassell.
6. We'll be praying for Kevin Robinson to make his debut.
7. Patrick Surtain and Nick Novak are going to lose their jobs. Prompting Brandon Carr to start game 2 and the eventual signing of Piotr Czech as our new kicker.
I honestly think that if the Chiefs spread the field and give Jamaal and Kolby the ball we'll see alot of missed tackles and a relatively close game. The Chiefs will have a fire in their eyes and will turn some heads.
Like I said "Anything can happen!"

Kevin Robinson can't make his debut...
He’s not on the 53 man roster. He has to be activated first, and I don’t think he can be activated until week 6.

But...
Doesn’t mean I can’t wait and wish he was on the team.

Why do I think
Kolby and Jamaal are going to have better years average wise(per carry)? I am still not sold on the fact that LJ is a premier back, he did have the best line in the NFL in front of him. I will however give LJ credit he is trying to become the complete back, he is stepping up to block now. The Arizona game really impressed me when he took on a D-End and held his own.(I hope he reads this and proves me wrong!) I still think they can pull this one out! None of the NE team is giving us a chance! They will take us lightly!

Oh and I
would rather see both young corners on the field, more speed.

Well...
With an older team, such as the Patriots, if you give Kolby and Jamaal more carries they will spread the field making the LB corp the go wide also. Jamaal and Kolby are more shifty where as LJ and Jackie Battle are more truck-stick kinda guys.

Yep
the lack of mobility of their LB corp (with the exception of Mayo) is the weakness we need to exploit. I am SURE Gailey knows this. They also don’t have the most fantastic secondary in the world, but the short underneath routes covered by LB’s would let Croyle get rid of the ball sooner. Do they even have a LB who can run with Gonzalez? If not, they’ll have to give safety help over the top, leaving one of our WR’s with single coverage…

Gonzo should have a good game against the retirement home tenants manning the LB spots for the Patsies…

Completely agree
With the age of the defense in NE spreading the field should be something to look at. TG should have a good day. Hopefully LJ does too.

I know he doesn't look like it
but TG started the same year as Vrabel, one year after Bruschi. I hope they are showing their age more than Tony.

Wow, you're right
I never realized that. Those guys are hitting the end of their careers and while TG may be doing the same his numbers aren’t showing it.

Tony's Healthy Lifestyle business will be bigger than Jenny Craig
If Tony wants to put his face on a personal health business for eating and working out correctly, wouldn’t that become number one in no time? Think Tony would have any trouble getting on Oprah? Appealing to men at the same time? Wouldn’t hurt him to have his wife in it with him, would it?

This will be a great test for us
We will make mistakes, but I know we will play hard! I agree anything can happen and that is why they play the games. I really feel that if we were a little more EXPERIENCED team we could go into Foxboro and take advantage of those punks! 3 keys to victory: Pass rush Brady/Cassel, Brodie take advantage of the weakER secondary, and control the time of possesion. If these young guys can hang in there for a couple of quarters, they will gain confidence and then they will be dangerous! Young legs are killer in the 4th quarter! Oh, and I wouldn’t sit by Sir Eccles and Primetime at the game if I were you!

I like the way you think.
Since we’re fantasizing here, I am going to combine part of your #7 with the fan post that predicted the 24-21 chief victory. Novak got fired by going 1 out of 4 on field goals. It would take that performance for Herm to send him to the farm. That would imply that we were in scoring range at least 7 times against the pats during that game. I love winning the field position battle. Even with a crappy kicker it should have been 30-21. Either way a win is a win.

Prediction: more Chiefs' passes than you ever thought possible
Not just because we’re behind. But even our control-the-ball, run-the-clock staff knows that running into their D line is not our best chance of winning. Chan will create. We will try downfield. But we’ll see a lot of passes to Charles, Smith, Cox, Gonzales and Cottom that will effectively be long handoffs, but will go on the stat sheet as passes.
The three sacks we get will be credited to DJ, Williams (bad hand and all) and Flowers. Made possible by a decent push up the middle. But our run defense will be our Achilles.
This is such a high risk/reward game, it’s tough to call. (Like the rest are easy.) If we guess right and our blitzes pay off early, it’s going to be a game. One we could even win. My gut tells me we lose, 17-30. My heart tells we win 20-17 on a last second Novak field goal.

Excellent Thoughts
I agree with nearly everything above except for the Novak posts. I really think we will be pleasently surprised, if not shocked, that he will be a solid and long term kicker for us. I think he actually proved himself during the off season. I believe he has put in the work and has the desire to be a CHIEF, not just a kicker. I’m happy for him and for us and he will have to PROVE me wrong.
In addition to the other expectations: 100 + yards for LJ, 80 + yards for TG, and + 2 on turnovers.
by TXChiefan on Sep 4, 2008 11:45 AM CDT 0 recs
+2 on turnovers
we’ll need that if we are going to come out of Foxboro with a win…actually, +3 would be nice.

Hanna
Noticing Hana is moving up the east coast. As long as it doesn’t end up causing the game to be postponed, the weather from it could actually help the Chiefs. Now I do live on the gulf coast and would never wish a storm on anyone. They are terrible for anyone to go through.
The weather from this storm may ground the air attack of the Pats. If it is windy and rainy, there will be a lot of running the ball. If that is the case we could have a shot.
by cmpotter on Sep 5, 2008 11:58 PM CDT 0 recs
Then the game would have an asterisk
But I’d still take it. :-)

Dang....
Looks like the storm may not be much of a factor at all really…too bad…that could have taken some of the air out of their passing game for sure…
I just expect to see how we match up to one of the best organizations and teams in the league…
GO CHIEFS!
