The Streak

I went to Arrowhead Stadium with no expectations of victory. Hate to say it, but I just didn’t see it happening. Interestingly enough, there was a ton of excitement buzzing around even as we were started out the day tailgating. Already I was reminded of trips to Arrowhead a few years back (I will get back to that) but I didn’t put two and two together. Something special was brewing today and I was damn lucky to be there to see it. I won’t forget this one for quite awhile.

Do you ever have one of those feelings? You know, the one where you say to yourself “We’re gonna win!”.  As the National Anthem was being sung, here came the tears, and the feeling was electric! I tried to temper back my feelings, because I knew we could not win this game. NO WAY. I needed some sign that we could do it. We needed something to get the Arrowhead frenzy started. And what do you know, Larry Alphonso Johnson busted lose for a 64 yard gain on the second play of the game! WOW! Today my friends, we were going to BRING IT!

The frustration of 12 straight losses had finally done something. It had allowed us to loosen up. To quit worrying, stressing, and listening to everything they had been saying about us for way too long. Truth is, after awhile you start to believe it. Doubt creeps in and before you know it…fear. This was the enemy we were fighting, and it all had to end here. Today.

We started with those 2 field goals. Field goals! That was not going to do it against this high powered offense led by one of the best young QBs in the game. “No” I cried. “We need touchdowns! Go for it Herm!”.  Obviously, he did not hear me. Maybe next time I will try to get seats closer to Mr. Edwards. Anyway, we were playing Hermball and keeping it close, but keeping the lead. This was the first time I could remember us playing with a lead in a long time.

I waited for the bubble to burst. Sooner or later, it had to happen. But we managed to stay in front of the dreaded Broncos, although they were definitely in striking range. Well, I had gotten every other wish today, so I wished for a “Pick 6”. What could it hurt? I was rewarded with a DJ strip of Baby TO and Flowers taking the ball down to the 2! Man, what was happening? Do I have some pull with the Big Guy or something? Are the stars perfectly aligned?... Actually, I think we had a TOTAL TEAM effort today. Guys were making plays. Players were 10 feet tall. Things slowed down for these guys. You do know that you make your own luck in this world, some are just better at doing it.

Flashback: 2 years ago I went to the Ravens game at Arrowhead in early December. No emotion. Notta. I am not sure if anyone thought that we even had a chance in that one. It felt like the beginning of the end. I was watching an old team get whipped by a team that would lose in the playoffs to the eventual Super Bowl Champions. The perpetual excitement that surrounded the Chiefs, and their uncanny ability to keep us interested in their seasons even if they were average, was gone. We knew we would have to go another direction next year. If this was the best we could do, then it was time to go on. Goodbye Trent Green and the last remnant of the old ways. Funny though, at the time, I thought we were ready for what was to come. It is a hard thing to get ready to lose.

Oh did I forget to mention that it was HOT! DAMN HOT! I think that made the emotions boil to the surface a little more. I think all of us FANS clapped, yelled, and Tomahawk Chopped a little louder today. One thought that came to my mind was this: Please young rookie players, see this. See Arrowhead in all its glory! See what players like TG and Waters have known for quite some time. This is the best place to play football on God's green earth! I am not sure if they had seen this yet? Well, they needed to see it. Perhaps they will desire to see it again.

As the game crept along, you could tell that these guys were going to find a way to win. We were winning a lot of battles. We made a lot of our luck. We came ready to KICK SOME ASS! And frankly, that is what football is all about. If you don’t get excited waiting for the opening kick-off, and I mean EX-CITE-ED, then you just don’t get it. Good football makes me want to take somebody’s head off. It is by no means politically correct or a game where the players all get “participation medals”! It is a war of attrition that is over when the other guy does not want to get hit by you again! Today was the first time in a long time that we witnessed some real football being played on the Hallowed ground of Arrowhead Stadium. This was a good step in the maturation of this young team. The Streak is over.

A new one is beginning.

Great point

About Waters & TG and the game experience in Arrowhead. It’s something else to behold and I too hope the rookies got a taste in their mouth for it
