Around SBN: Are The Orioles Bad Or Unlucky With Their Young Pitching?

Wow...Just Wow

I just caught the updates on AP to Sunday's game and I almost can't believe it. Who was this team?

Quick question because I have slow internet here in India: Was Sunday's game a fluke of sorts or did you see real progress in the way this team is developing?

GOOOOO CHIEFS!!!!

Hey Chris

It was pretty unbelievable.

I think this game was indicative of what we CAN accomplish. At the very least we know this team has the ability. Now, whether they can put it together week in and week out is a different story.

Glad to hear from you.

Peaks and Valleys

I agree with what primetime said.

We’ve seen the valleys of what pieces are still missing for a young rebuilding team the last couple weeks. This was one of the peaks that show the potential of the pieces that are there. I suspect the whole year is going to be a roller coaster ride.

Once again, as LJ goes, the offense goes. Damon Huard throwing for 75% accuracy instead of Thigpens 38% helped a lot too.

Agreed - no fluke

But things will still be up and down. When I say no fluke, I mean we hit them hard, took some shots (like Savage getting blown up, but hanging on to the ball) and still won. Also, it wasn’t one of those games where every bounce went out way. We were fortunate that a fumble came out an instant before the player DJ tackled hit the ground, but DJ definitely stripped the ball and caused the fumble. We actually overcame a bad break when Bowe made an outstanding — and what would have been an important — catch when his back heel was barely out of bounds.

It was a hard fought game with helmets and bodies flying. No weird breaks that weren’t earned, I’d say. Even with a two touchdown lead in the final minute, though, I wasn’t totally sure about the outcome until the last few seconds went off the clock. And the Broncos came close to getting a onside kick. So we were lucky in one way to come away with the ball. A Bronco got two hands on the ball while in the air, but one of our guys hit him while he was in the air — again making our own luck, if you will.

LJ ran like the man of old, scrambling for more yards, not giving up on any play, and hitting people when he had the chance. He would not be denied on two tries for the goal line from the two. The first one a leap in which I actually think the ball crossed the goal line before he was down. The second one where he was going 100 mph when he took the hand off and torpedoed into the line for the last few inches.

Each kicker missed a field goal early. Both were relatively short. So every adventure with Novak made me nervous, but he hung in there and went 4/5 in the end. Novak’s kick offs went to the goal line, but they still appear to be on the low side from what I can tell.

I agree about Novak.

There was a kick late in the game where I swear the ball didn’t arc at all. I love the distance, but the height/time in air needs a little work.

Another break that did not go our way

Was a great hit by one of our DBs after Stokely caught a ball. It was very close to being a fumble that we recovered, but was ultimately ruled an imcomplete pass. It’s not an officiating complaint. Just another point regarding the fact that the win was not a fluke.

No doubt

Our defensive secondary looks damn promising. That’s what happens when you win games, is you make the plays. As a Chiefs fan we have lots to look forward to and todays performance instilled much needed belief in this young team

I think getting points on the board right away was big

We’re a better team when we’re not playing from behind.

Pass Rush was still very weak, but our Defense was very active...

I liked most was the play of Turk McBride, when he hustled down field and created the turnover….Great play….NEED more of a push from our pass rush tho’. D-Line looked slow off the snap.

But can’t argue with 33 pts.

I am gonna go out a on a limb

and say the Oakland game was the fluke. I think we made some progress in the Falcon game and we have made progress yesterday. I think the Oakland game was an 0-10 team who came in over confident thinking they could just wipe the table with the Raiders and got embarrassed. The next few games will tell as far as progress.

We have to remember

That we have a brand new offensive coordinator that is still trying to get to know what the guys he has are capable of doing and what they’re not. The players are still trying to get a handle on what they’re being asked to do as well and some of our young guys (and we have a lot of them) are still trying to get used to the speed of the game.

I think something clicked at halftime of the Falcons game. They found out what they needed to do to spring LJ and have looked great ever since. Getting a QB in there that could hit the broad side of a barn helps too. :)

Chris--I was even further away than India during the game...

Trying to sell a car, in Spokane, Washington—on a Sunday. I only caught glimpses of the game, and being a Bronco fan each sneak into the lobby was more bad news for my team. I watched the game at home, after work, and kinda got a sick stomach. I’m not sure if your team really played good or if our team really played bad. It is clear however that we both have young teams and we are both capable of winning. I just wish we hadn’t seen your young teams’ potential show up on us.

You guys are on the right track—thank goodness you don’t have Al or Davis to change the progress.

I have been a Bronco and AFL fan since 1962, therefore, I have to thank you for Hank and the win over Minnesota.

I also look forward to your teams visit to ‘Mile High’……revenge will be sweet….

The best defense is a good offense!
I hope.

Hello Mike, and thanks for stopping by the site...

Revenge may be sweet, but its not til Dec., so right now we own the bronco’s ;-)

Plus, you weren’t suppose to lose to us, your the mighty broncos, and we are the lowly 0-3 chiefs (in full rebuilding mode) that got slapped around the by the raiders. The team that you embarrased on national tv, but we still beat you guys, and not by a little. 33pts and allowing your offense only 19, when in the previous 3 games you were averaging 30 pts a game…??? Thats why the football is a funny shape, because the game can just be funny at times.

Take Care, and we’ll be seeing you in Dec. 7

aP..Chief, you are right....this is a funny game at times.

We have some new, young, and ok guys on our defense—but you guys have done much better than us—on defense. We have a better offense—they just came in overconfident—or something. Its hard to tell when you have such a young team. I am happy to see the AFC West starting to grow—I am tired of hearing that we are dirt compared to the NFC East.

Dec. 7th….a day of infamy for one of our teams anyway.

The best defense is a good offense!
I hope.

by Mike Clark on Oct 1, 2008 7:39 AM CDT up reply actions

I think it was all those years in 90's that we kept beating each other up in our own division...

that the decline of our division was inevitable. In the early to mid 90’s we were the division to beat. Wasn’t it that every team in our division went to the Superbowl, except the Chiefs (aarrhh) and Seattle (before the realignment).

If only we can borrow your offense to play along with our young defense, maybe we can get back to the Superbowl. Congrats, Cutler looks like a real stud.
Good luck to guys during the season. Hopefully Brodie develops like Herm expects, and our matchups in the future will be decider to who advances to the Superbowl.
