Trade Larry Johnson For Roy Williams

The word is out that Detroit is looking to deal WR Roy Williams.  So what about a swap of LJ for RW? We need a receiver to compliment Bowe.  And think about teams defending a lineup of giants with Cottam, Williams and Bowe.  Then we just draft a QB next year and go to work.

"On Thursday, new G.M. Martin Mayhew announced the team's intentions, but at the same time indicated that he would listen to any offers. That tells us that the Lions are trying to get the word out that Williams is available, without losing any leverage."  CNN/SI.com

Two Things

Roy Williams is an unrestricted free agent after this season, so trading for him is basically a rental situation. Second, he said he wants to play in Texas next year, so even if we traded for him it’s going to be pricey to sign him long-term. Third, the Lions just drafted a running back to be their long-term starter (Kevin Smith) and signed Rudi Johnson, so LJ’s not a need for them, so he has marginal trade value. Fourth, Williams is likely to get franchised this offseason (since he’s their best free agent) so it’s probably a better idea to discuss trades with them when that happens…when his value is lower (because they’re severely underusing him this year). Fifth, if he hates the low number of targets he gets in Detroit, he’s really going to hate it in Herm’s offense, so we’re not likely to be able to sign (or re-sign) him until Herm’s gone.

I do like the idea of acquiring Williams, but not trading for him now. We just don’t have much to give up that they’d want, and what they would want probably isn’t worth it, and it’s not a good fit with the current regime.

RE: Roy and the franchise tag

I’ve heard this but…how serious do you think the Lions are? Tag a guy for nearly $8 million per year when he’s probably going to be the #2 in your offense. At best.

Let’s face it, UC, this is a Megatron world. I don’t think Roy’s stickin’ with them. He’s already been getting pushed out of the offense and frankly has had one season worth $8 million a year.

I think Jerry Jones

Will put the feelers out and make sure Roy knows he’ll get some big time bucks in big D.

Doubtless

But when the Lions tag him, we’ll likely have more to offer in trade.

They'll Tag Him

But I think they’ll try to trade him for what they can get after they do so. I agree that retaining him doesn’t make sense considering how unhappy he is, but he’s simply too valuable for the Lions to let go with no compensation.

He is an interesting target for us after the season, though, and like I said in that post I wrote about free agency I think the Chiefs should definitely be interested in him (assuming we get a real head coach in place).

What if we threw in something to make it worthwhile

to do a sign and trade? (long term contract involved)

by Lanier63 on Sep 27, 2008 3:48 PM CDT up reply actions

First

There’s nothing we have in the way of players that we’d be willing to give up that’s going to be attractive to Detroit. They’ll be rebuilding too, so Gonzalez is out. They’ve got running backs so Johnson is out. Donnie Edwards is old and injured. Surtain is old and injured. The only thing we can trade is draft picks, and the only way it makes sense is if we’re guaranteed that Williams will stay here, and he’s already said he wants to go play in Texas.

I will tell you why I don't think it could happen

And I won’t even get into the devastating salary cap implications that would come from it.

The Lions selected a rookie, Kevin Smith out of UCF, high in the 3rd round. In addition, they signed veteran Rudi Johnson to a $1.1 million deal on August 1st.

LJ is about to turn 29 and I think pretty much everyone realizes that he is ineffective behind a below average line of which the Lions’ line definitely qualifies.

Chiefs offense has nothing right now without LJ

We saw it last year when LJ got injured and we lost every game. Our offense has looked horrible this year until LJ got going. Of course we want our young guys to develop to the point that we aren’t relying on just one player, but we aren’t there yet.

You don’t trade your best players just to trade them.

by ChiefDJ on Sep 27, 2008 11:25 AM CDT reply actions

Really

It looked good until LJ got going? I don’t think it looked good even then.

And it’s not LJ really got going. Take out his 48 yard run and his numbers are 23 carries for 73 yards. That’s more indicative of what he did over the course of the game.

by Joel Thorman on Sep 27, 2008 11:33 AM CDT up reply actions

LJ

He broke free several times in the 2nd half. Yes he still got stuffed a lot, because our O-line sucks, but it was enough that the Falcons had to honor the run and gave Thigpen a chance.

LJs first half stats – 7 Attmps 19 yds
Thigpens first half stats – 1 completion – 18 yds

LJs 2nd half stats – 17 attmpts 121 yds
Thigpens 2nd half stats – 13 completions – 110 yds

Don’t think thats just a coincidence.

Correction

And it’s not LIKE LJ really got…

by Joel Thorman on Sep 27, 2008 11:33 AM CDT reply actions

We need to make a move...

But this isn’t the one. Roy would be an awesome addition, but I wouldn’t want us to make any moves that might not work in the “next” system. And since I don’t see the next system coming for two more years, I don’t want us to handicap the next regime before they can have a say coming in.
If Detroit is smart, they hang onto him and tag him as mentioned above. Jerry Jones has shown the willingness (See Joey Galloway) that the future of his team be damned, he will have certain players based onthe star status similar to an owner whose name rhymes with Dal Avis… And with a Texas product, this wouldn’t be a bad PR move either.
On other posts in this blog there has been discussions about coaches and if you are anti-Cowboys, this is what you want to see. Jerry pays a hefty price and gives up high draft choices, Wade Phillips starts losing the team as his lax discipline approach allows the “me first "players to start taking over, Wade Phillips gets canned, in comes a more structured coach – Jason Garrett, and TO suddenly hates playing for a coach that wants him to work as a team. This is speculation about Garrett, but he won’t really have a choice but to be tough following Phillips to regain control or his young coaching career will be over.
I can’t stand Carl Peterson but the one solid thing he does is not give in to "me first” players. LJ has toed the line a couple of times, but CP still stuck to his guns.
I was trying to think of good coaching prospects who could be the next Chiefs coach. I always though Kubiak would be a good coach but he isn’t faring well in Houston. He seemed to have the Chiefs number year in and year out. Do you guys think it is Kubiak or the situation? He seems to have a lot of control team control.
And my Marty plug of the day – Let’s get Marty back in there, and give him 5 years to turn it around. He has a lot of good young talent that would thrive in his system. If that happened, how quickly do you think season tix would sell out next year?

by KCAl on Sep 27, 2008 12:04 PM CDT reply actions

LJ

and discussions that surrond trading him really annoy me. Not just for their impracticality but more because they’re unfounded. Does anyone really think we could possibly have somebody in the backfield running the ball any BETTER? I firmly believe you can handpick any back in the NFL and put them behind our O-LINE and you will not see any improvement in production. LJ is still capable of rushing for 100yds every game, it relies on getting enough touches and proper play calling. Something he’s gotten the short end of the stick on both accounts

by KansasCityShuffle on Sep 27, 2008 12:05 PM CDT reply actions

Roy would be interesting

and help our red zone offense. But I am thinking a different route at wide receiver. A smaller, lightning quick guy to stretch the field more. We already have a big, physical wide receiver who is not afraid to go over the middle and has good YAC. That is why I was especially upset that we lost a guy like Price who had some of those qualities and he was already on the team! Maybe Franklin will keep developing into that guy?

by TheQ on Sep 27, 2008 1:41 PM CDT reply actions

Larry

WHATS with all the…“well if you took out that one long run for 43 yards he only averaged 3 yards.” true…but the point is-if you keep giving the ball to him (more than just 12 times!!!) then he is going to break off those runs!!!!

by KCWolfff on Sep 27, 2008 5:01 PM CDT reply actions

I have to agree

“if you took” is what it is, it doesn’t matter. The runs happen and they count with the averages.

by Lanier63 on Sep 27, 2008 5:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Yep

Those big runs have a big impact on a defense just like a long bomb pass does. It will change the way they play and thats what happened in the second half.

by ChiefDJ on Sep 27, 2008 8:31 PM CDT up reply actions

Agreed

It’s poor form to cherry-pick numbers just because they fit the arguments we want to make. You have to put Johnson’s long runs in with the ones that weren’t that good…that’s why yards per carry is an average of production, not an guarantee that he’ll get 4 yards every play.

Supporting the lesser of two evils is still supporting something evil.
