This is probably all over-blown, but Bulger out of STL?
According to espn Marc Bulger doesn't want to play for Linehan now that he's been benched in favor of Trent Green. Steven Jackson also has been outspoken in his ciriticism of the benching (I wonder if STL fans are ripping into him like we do into LJ after he talks/whines, or if he's earned the right to voice discontent without a backlash).
This has prompted several questions worthy of a lazy saturday morning, where at least in KC it's about 65 degrees, slightly breezy, and absolutely GORGEOUS.
1. Should we even discuss the idea of trying to trade for Bulger at this early of a stage (and by early I mean early from the STL side of things, early in that Brodie's still out, early in that its only week 4, and early in that it would be a major QB in the middle of a season...maybe we try at the end of the year?).
2. What would it take for LJ to earn the ability to voice some discontent and not get called out w/ references to diapers, his poor performance of late, etc.? In my personal opinion, he needs to have LJ-of-old games for at least 5 of 6 games in a row, make multiple statements in support of whichever teammates (rookies and veterans) play well during that time, and only then (so, we're talking week 10), MAYBE could he get away with some complaining if he presents it as "the team is dealing w/ X problem" and does not say the running-back version of "I can't throw the ball AND catch it".
3. In the article, Jackson references the players playing for their jobs and how that's not necessarily a good thing because that's when people make mistakes. Herm has mentioned before that he likes players to feel queasy about their jobs, and that competition (except, apparently, at RT) is always good for the team because it pushes the starter. I tend to agree w/ Herm, but I played all of 1 year of high-school football. Anyone have any experience to the contrary about that feeling of job/starting-spot security?
Did my best to be creative w/ the LJ poll...

I'm just kidding about the trade LJ one
I just did that to get Chris riled up even though he’s half-way around the globe.

Haha
Chris: “How many times have I said trading LJ is not a feasible option right now? Can we forget about it?”

Good post, Hulk
Should bring about some interesting discussion….or it will keep me from enjoying this 65 degree, sunny weather. Either way I’m blaming you :)

I wouldn't trade for Bulger
He has been in the Martz/Vermeil/ Saunders offense for a long time. It would take him too long to adjust, and he doesn’t really fit Chan’s need for a mobile QB.

He's 31
We look to be at least 3 years away from having a competent and balanced O and D. I don’t want to run into the same problems of having an older QB with a huge contract (he just signed a 6 year deal last year). That would be the 90s all over again (well, except for the big contract part).

re: LJ poll
I chose option #2. I don’t have a problem with him critiquing the team. He’s a valued member of the organization so as long as its constructive I’m cool with it.
However, in LJ’s case it’s usually not constructive. Like after the Oakland game (I think) he alluded to not wanting to be in KC anymore, etc. That’s crap. You have teammates who are in this together. And you better believe people (i.e. your next employer) notice when you bail on your teammates like that.

Bulger
First, they’ll fire the coach before they even consider trading Bulger. Linehan’s a terrible head coach, those two have been feuding for two years and with the long-term contract Bulger got it’s not viable to trade him now. So he’s not going anywhere
Also, he’s 31 and he’s been beat up a lot the last couple of years. He’s not a long-term solution and he’s not worth much to us in a trade.

yea, I was thinking of putting up a different fanpost,
on the topic of:
If Brodie can’t stay healthy once he comes back (and or stinks it up so badly he’s eliminated as a viable option for the future),
AND the Chiefs don’t trade for someone else’s young, developing quarterback (which I find unlikely to happen),
AND the Chiefs draft a new “QB of the future” in next year’s draft,
AND decide not to throw him to the wolves right away, but let him ride the pine and study/learn for a couple years,
what do we do for a starting QB for the next year or two? Bulger isn’t the best example for this, since he is locked up long term, but what if we signed an older QB knowing he’s just taking care of the team for the next year or two (kind of a Warner/Leinart situation…sort of) until our next QB of the future is ready to roll?

Having trouble processing
Too many qualifiers. Not enough caffeine.

Losman
He’s an unrestricted free agent this offseason and the Bills are extremely unlike to franchise him (since Lee Evans is a UFA this year too). He’s the best target for us in the offseason and should be our number one priority for signing.

1) No, Lineham will be out long before Bulger will. Bulger will be back starting pretty soon.
2) LJ has the same problem Herm does. Some people don’t like him and no matter what he says, its the wrong thing. I think he was being extremely paranoid thinking he was getting “phased out” but thats pretty much the norm for him.

Yea Herm
May have started to get some following, that whole get over it thing is an absolute killer. LJ starts producing, as Priest said on the spot last night “he has been paid” then he has every right to critique whomever he chooses. I think someone hit the nail on the head with LJ last week, he got to comfortable with Herm. Now that in his mind things are going south for him, maybe he gets that old chip back and runs with some fire!

I thought the "Get Over It" statment was quite appropriate
People complain that Herm doesn’t show any emotion, but when he does they get pissed about it.

That is crap though,
Think of how much money people have wrapped up in season tickets, parking, food, etc. Then to have someone tell them to get over it when there is NOT a competitive product on the field is a bit much. I wonder how he would accept when his coaching career is over and another GM tells him he will not hire him as a head coach to get over it, that is the way it is.
by Eric Allen on Sep 27, 2008 9:28 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
That is a real possibility
And he chose to do the rebuild anyway. Thats not something most coaches would do. They would go out and buy every free agent they could find to save their job one more year.
Its been 19 years since Chiefs fans have had to deal with having an actual bad team. Not just a team that couldn’t win in the playoffs, but just a plain bad team. No other team but the Steelers has gone that long. So yeah, it happens. At least they are doing what needs to be done to actually make progress towards a championship someday instead of just stringing those season ticket holders along for another 10 years.

At this point
It is two years in a row, could possibly turn this season around, but I somehow doubt it. This team has not only looked bad, it has not looked competitive, that is what makes it so hard to watch.

I completely agree
I keep trying to remind myself that this is necessary and I hope that we will get that next championship because of the foundation that is being laid right now.

Bulger
I am pretty sure Bulger isn’t going anywhere. Linehan will be lucky if he isn’t booted before the season is over. This was a decent team and should be a lot better than it is.
As for trading LJ…….. we are married to him.
