Around SBN: Larry Johnson's Future in Kansas City Bar-right-arrows

Maddennerdness

Hi, my name is KansasCityShuffle, and I'm a Madden-holic....

A woman once said that the biggest waste of time for a man over the age of 18 years is Madden football. I would have to tend to agree. Ever since I was gifted an original Xbox in 04' the console (aside from DVDs) has not seen a single disc in it other than the Madden series. The games folks, if you do not know, are absolutely addictive and particularly the franchise mode which lets face it - what can be more fun the playing owner of our beloved Chiefs? I don't play video games, just Madden. I'm not a gamer, just play Madden.

I should preface that I havent played the new release because I dont have a 360 nor do I need one. The last thing I need is the new and improved system & game(s) to  just further my habit. ; ^ ) I still prefer 07, over 08, because it still has Madden & Michael "in the booth" and still has all the same controls, gameplay and settings. Plus I prefer the league roster that year too

As much as I love the Chiefs and as much as I love Madden, I thought I'd try to bring my two loves together and see who else is a nerd here. ; ^  ) Interested to see if anybody else has had as much fun playing them as I. I'd love to trade tips and talk techniques and who knows if there's lots of interest out there maybe even form an online league

Its so easy to be an armchair GM & Coach and I've found it to be a good outlet for that

Cheers

I Play Madden, On The 360

This year’s version has been excellent so far. I dumped Croyle and Larry Johnson, traded for Brian Brohm and Marshawn Lynch and both are heading to the Pro Bowl(although I’d prefer that Brohm be a little less interception-prone).

Great thing about Madden is

Is the player development through game performances and training camps. So you can actually elevate talent. Essentially, everyone’s a product player in your system. There are no stars, just based on players skill level. Except for Eric Hicks, for some god damn reason he’s a beast on the DL in 07. He must have had a cousin working at EA ; ^ )

I believe you can play old versions on the new 360. Check out 07 – Croyle’s rookie year, Trent’s last, and Damon’s year before his last. I just update my roster and I got Croyle, Martin, Huard, and had Simms because I thought he was a sure thing. ; ^ ) Had to delete that season and would be delighted to add Harrington or Losman soon come. Oh yea, that game has David Greene in the league too so it’s fun throwing with a lefty

by KansasCityShuffle on Sep 25, 2008 7:06 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

The Cone Broke Me Of That

For some reason the cone’s a lot more awkward working with a lefty QB than a righty. Traded for Leinart in ’06 on the 360 and got so irritated with him that I dumped him to Cincy for Carson Palmer after one year.

By the way, you should give Madden 09 a run on the 360 if you know someone who’s got one…I like it a lot. The ’08 version was promising but the franchise-killing glitches really wrecked my enjoyment of it and I only played two seasons before I got tired of all the workarounds.

08' is in no way better than 07'

Just an updated roster. Great thing about 07’ is you can edit and modify rosters so with incoming draft classes I just add our new players in.

I’ve learned about all the glitches w/ 08’ (the last year of Madden that works on original Xbox) thats why I stay w/ the 07 season. It’s right at the crossroads of rebuilding with all the old vets but the “young” guys like DJ, Tamba, LJ , etc. I like take over Herm’s job from there : ^ )

I Get Around That

By also buying NCAA Football each year. Now they’ve got it set up where you can automatically update all of the NCAA players’ names for free off of XBox Live. Then I just import them right into Madden when I’ve finished with each season.

Does each year have to correspond?

Can college football 08 be imported to my Madden 07 or does college football 08 only worth with its respective year?

by KansasCityShuffle on Sep 25, 2008 8:01 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

They Have To Correspond

Otherwise there’d be no reason to keep buying the new NCAAs :)

by UCrawford on Sep 25, 2008 8:29 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Thats why I create/modify thru the drafts

I look at the player ratings in Madden 08 & 09 online, correspond it with rookies drafted into the league, edit them, and trade

by KansasCityShuffle on Sep 25, 2008 8:34 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Let me get this straight

I can buy NCAA 07, complete a season, and import the senior players into the draft of Madden 07? Is NCAA 07 accurate with its roster and player ratings? Does Tennessee have McBride & NC State have Tyler (I know not their names, but #’s & respective ratings)? I shoulda done this long time ago….

by KansasCityShuffle on Sep 27, 2008 11:57 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

NCAA Football 07

Short answer, yes. You can import players from NCAA Football to Madden in any year both were put out.

Long answer…each of the rosters for NCAA Football has players on it that are accurate representations (skill wise and physically) of real-life players on the NCAA teams. But they’re not named, so until this year you’d have to go in and physically change all the names yourself (or use the auto-name function which randomly generates names for them, but they’re not the same as real-life). This was because EA Sports is not legally allowed to sell you the names of those players. The only way you could import the actual names of the players was to pay some independent company to send you a memory chip with a current roster on it and then download that.

With NCAA Football 09, however, this changed. Now you can go to XBox Live and download free rosters that are compiled by other users (there are a lot of them out there, and many will advertise them…I downloaded one called PastaPadre that as far as I can tell was completely accurate) and this is free. So you can have the actual players to import to Madden.

One caveat…not all players from NCAA will transfer, only the top ranked players from each year’s draft class. Normally this catches all of the big named guys, but the better players on underrated teams don’t always make the cut because NCAA ranks them too low (although you can usually change their numbers a bit and up their ratings). Kansas last year is a prime example. For NCAA Football 08, Aqib Talib was not a highly ranked prospect…he made the cut to get imported to Madden in the season I played, but he was a 6th or 7th round draft pick. In ‘07 he couldn’t make the cut. So sometimes EA guesses wrong on a player’s potential, in which case you have to edit the player in NCAA or Madden or create them in Madden. Most of the time, they’re pretty good, though.

by UCrawford on Sep 27, 2008 12:36 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Branden Albert, Also

In Madden 08, when I imported him he was basically a scrub. Terrible ranking, wrong position, and I couldn’t really do anything to change it aside from run him through training (which would have taken years because he was so bad). Madden 09 allows you to edit positions for the 360 version though (previous editions didn’t) so this isn’t a problem anymore.

Oh, And

It’s not just seniors. NCAA Football has early entrants to the draft as well so you can get juniors and redshirt sophomores.

Plus

NCAA Football is just a really great game on its own. In some ways better than Madden.

I went out and bought it today

NCAA 07 that is. So is this game good for only importing the first draft class or after I complete the next season will it import too? Anxious to get the 07 class on my Madden roster….

by KansasCityShuffle on Sep 27, 2008 3:03 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Oh man

Tough choice. KU was my hometown team but with real rosters how can one possibly pass up Louisville w/ not only Smith, but Bush AND Brohm!

by KansasCityShuffle on Sep 27, 2008 3:31 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

To Answer Your Questions

First, after each season is completed you have the opportunity to change jobs. You’re not stuck with the same team the entire time in Dynasty mode. You can either take the positions that the computer offers you immediately after the season is over, or you can resign your position and look through the lists of available jobs. Doing that, though does cause your coaching rating to take a hit.

Second, you import the classes from Dynasty mode, so you can import a class to Madden for every year you play Dynasty mode. I did about 10 years worth of classes in 07. I think it runs up to 30 years. During the season, part of your job as coach will be to recruit high school players, so once the real-life players have all graduated, you’ll be importing classes that consiste of the players you recruited.

Supporting the lesser of two evils is still supporting something evil.

by UCrawford on Sep 27, 2008 10:57 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Awesome

So I can edit Will Franklin, DuJuan Morgan, Dorsey, and all of the 08 draftees whom are juniors and import them the next season? So basically all of the freshmen class in NCAA 07 is the last of the real players in the game? After that its obviously computer generated players…

by KansasCityShuffle on Sep 27, 2008 11:21 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

On Teams You Don't Control

The computer decides who gets imported into the next draft class or not, and when they graduate.

So basically all of the freshmen class in NCAA 07 is the last of the real players in the game?

Yup, but after you get into NCAA you may find that you’re fine with playing the computer-generated players in Madden also. You do get attached to them after a bit :)

by UCrawford on Sep 28, 2008 8:57 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I Fondly Remember

Blake Cumbie…my scrambling QB when I ran the Army team (my third team in Dynasty mode after Kansas and Tennessee) who was also a 60% passer with a cannon arm. He was the number one pick of the Madden draft. Unfortunately, I bought the new Madden before I could trade for him in and play him in the pros on the old Madden.

Plus, NCAA Football 08 was a much better product than 07 for the XBox 360. They actually had Memorial Stadium (they didn’t have all of the stadiums in 07 and the Hawks missed the cut) and since 07 was the first NCAA Football game for the 360 it was basically a stripped down version. NCAA and Madden 08 featured low tackling the next year, where you could use a small DB to take out a power back by hitting him at the knees…awesome addition. Fortunately, both NCAA and Madden 09 are polished enough products this year that I’ll probably not buy the 2010 editions (I just don’t have enough time to justify it).

Marshawn Lynch

Thats weak. You must be winning the Super Bowl every season. I can understand Brohm, but give the little fellas Charles & Smith a chance. ; ^ ) Does 09’ have Savage as a free agent? Marques Hagans is a FA in 07

by KansasCityShuffle on Sep 25, 2008 7:09 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

No Savage

Charles and Smith are both on my team. I just dumped LJ, mainly because of age concerns. And I seriously upgraded that offensive line. I’m currently starting Albert, Shawn Andrews, Nick Mangold, Ryan Lilja and Jeff Otah. McIntosh was on the first train out of town once the new sheriff (UC) arrived in Chiefsland. :)

The new sheriff

I picked up Otah on the right side too (2011, though).

by primetime 07 on Sep 25, 2008 7:27 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Madden

has been one of the biggest parts of my life since I bougth 2003. However, I must admit that I am quite the gamer so I do play other titles as well. In my current season I traded LJ for Reggie Bush because as much as I hate reggie, he is perfect for how I play. I love putting Reggie in with Charles as a fullback and slicing through the defense with Brodie.

Also, I am going to assume that you are talking about madden 09? 08 doesn’t have Albert, or any other of the rookies mentioned above. It’s too bad we all have different systems (I have a pS3) because it would be pretty wild to play each other online.

However, being a university student, I have spent many nights with a pack of red bull playing madden until I passed out, and I am sure I am not the only one.

by Ben S on Sep 25, 2008 7:19 PM CDT   0 recs

You're not the only one
…slicing through the defense with Brodie.

Wait…we’re talking about NFL football, right? Didn’t know if you Canadians were playing the CFL version with Brodie as the star :)

by primetime 07 on Sep 25, 2008 7:29 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Hah!

It would be pretty cool if there was a CFL version too. The Calgary Stampeders are actually one of the best in our league, and have been home to players like Jeff Garcia (he is a hero here) and Marc Borigcter (mis-spelled, I know). Also, we just signed jabari arthur!

I was actually really excited to see Michael Vick come to the CFL and break every record we have until I found out that NFL players that can’t play in the NFL are no longer allowed to play in the CFL (the ricky williams rule).

stampeders.com

I officially made the stampeders the favourite CFL team for KC Chiefs fans, especially since many ex-Chiefs either played for or are currently on the roster :)

As for strategy...

As mentioned above, I like to run dual HB and get a lot of speed on the field so I can exploit mismatches. However, I must admit that I used to enjoy playing herm ball (except I am actually good at it) by running out the clock and winning a game 14-0. I guess I just became bored of it and changed things up a bit.

by Ben S on Sep 25, 2008 7:25 PM CDT   0 recs

Gotta respect the 14-0 games

Plus, when you in a franchise the 14-0 games usually include a lot of running the ball which makes it go that much faster.

by primetime 07 on Sep 25, 2008 7:29 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Exactly

Thats the nice thing about those games; they go super quick because you have a 9 minute drive of running the ball. The best part about games like that is that it forces you to choose a good play because you spend so much time running the clock that you might as well do it right.

Unfortunatly I only ever have games like those against my friends, or teams like the patriots where I know it will be a hard game to win.

I need to play some Madden now…

by Ben S on Sep 25, 2008 7:38 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Strategy

I keep the default playbook for the Chiefs. Don’t create any of my own packages or anything. In 07’ Holmes has 2 years remaining in the league so I have a running back by committee scenario w/ him, LJ, and get this – BJ Sams! Always use a fullback for blocking who in this season is Ronnie Cruz who I kept on because A)he’s young B)he’s damn fast in the game for a FB C)he has higher blocker ratings than HB’s

I run a lot of check offs and audibles at the line of scrimmage. I run predominantly as to minimize turnovers w/ Croyle (effects his ratings) and when I do pass its Tony G getting the ball 75% of the time. Oh yea, I forgot to mention the best thing about the 07 season is Roaf, Shields, Wiegman all continue to play another 4 years. I just create Taylor & Richardson thru the drafts and have kept Tre Stallings on as well

Sami Parker is deadly at the slot position

by KansasCityShuffle on Sep 25, 2008 7:37 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Hah

I see that you have put in your time as well…

I like to run a west coast offense because I have always been a bit of a math guy, so it makes me pretty happy when I have nice stats to finish the game. What can I say? I’m a stat-junkie.

As for defense, I am all about the exotic blitz packages by running zone blitzes and cramming everyone up on the line. Doing that against a friend especially works because they never know who is coming and it always keeps them off gaurd.

by Ben S on Sep 25, 2008 7:41 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I've Never Played A Season With Priest Holmes

Nothing against Priest, I’ve just always traded him off to help build a much younger team overall. Which kind of bummed me out because he was actually my favorite Chiefs running back.

Supporting the lesser of two evils is still supporting something evil.

by UCrawford on Sep 25, 2008 7:49 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I always did the same

But from playing previous seasons I always saw he retired after just 2 more years and knowing I was going to be drafting Smith & Charles successively I left him on for the remainder of his contract (despite the 4 million a year). I’m sure glad I did because with no other two rushers on the All-Madden setting have I been able to have 1,000+ rushing yds each. If a player retires w/ KC (like Preist did), I’ll leave them on but if they go elsewhere I’m quick to exchange them for picks (i.e Wesley)

by KansasCityShuffle on Sep 25, 2008 7:57 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Thats legit.

I wish I was man-enough to send gonzalez to the patriots for draft picks, but I’ll never do it! Not to mention, he is way to good.

by Ben S on Sep 25, 2008 8:00 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I Traded Gonzalez One Year

To the Patriots, who I had to play the same season. Hated myself so much for it that I’ll never trade him again. Fortunately after season 2 my salary cap is always in great shape, so whenever Tony G. ages and his speed gets too low for me to live with I just get somebody else and leave him as the #2 or #3 TE until he retires.

Had Vernon Davis on Madden 08 as my #1 TE…that guy teamed with Tony make an awesome duo :)

Supporting the lesser of two evils is still supporting something evil.

by UCrawford on Sep 25, 2008 8:32 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Vernon David is a monster

I played w/ SF one season to use Alex Smith and Vernon Davis is the only TE in 07 thats better than Tony. His truck stick is brutal

by KansasCityShuffle on Sep 25, 2008 8:36 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I agree

Getting into a fight with Vernon Davis would be scary.

by primetime 07 on Sep 25, 2008 8:44 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Nice Clip

All I know is that on Madden a TE with 90+ speed pretty much destroys linebacking corps, and if you plug in two top WRs (I had Bowe and Megatron as my two WRs with Romo at QB) forget about it…every game’s a blowout.

Now if only Mike Martz would wise up and figure a way to get Davis into the game plan. That guy’s skills are wasted in San Fran.

Supporting the lesser of two evils is still supporting something evil.

by UCrawford on Sep 25, 2008 8:54 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I try to keep things realistic

I keep two seasons always on the harddrive. One is the Chiefs where I just mimmic their rosters, player movements, and playbook. Like I said I like keep it realistic here as possible otherwise I just turn the Chiefs into an All-Star team.

The other season is where I’ll throw together the all star team and blow up another teams roster and start from ground up.

by KansasCityShuffle on Sep 25, 2008 7:31 PM CDT   0 recs

I agree

But I stay somewhere in between. I am always open to going out and getting some talent on my team, but I always refrain from signing every 99 free agent I can (which I used to do, no matter the age).

These days I like to stay somewhere in between. I also just began to play all of the games in a season, something I stopped doing a few years ago because I was sick of it. I must say that playing all the games makes the franchise that much more interesting.

Another thing: You have to love the players that you play with in Madden, and then you love them in the NFL just because you played with them. In 03, I played with Ed Reed and Julius Peppers (both rookies) and to this day I still love both of them for no reason other than that I played with them ihn madden. In fact, I actually bought both of their jerseys! Maybe I am playing to much Madden…

by Ben S on Sep 25, 2008 7:36 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

The best thing

Is getting the Chiefs and dealing off all the old players and getting an outrageous amount of draft picks (wait, that sounds familiar). Madden still hasn’t perfected the trading aspect. Guys in their mid 30s are still way over valued.

by primetime 07 on Sep 25, 2008 7:40 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Word

Players overall ratings should realistically start to decrease when they get over 30.

I sent Trent Green out for a 1st round, 2nd round, and 3rd round…

by KansasCityShuffle on Sep 25, 2008 7:43 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Oh yea

You gotta play all the season games. Otherwise it’s not a real franchise where players aren’t being evaluated by game and on play basis…

I hear ya about loving the players you use. It can jades opinions of their true talents ; ^ ) In fact I would say if it weren’t for Madden, I wouldn’t have “rediscovered” the Chiefs that just used to be the hometown team Dad & Grandpops rooted for. Madden is good for the NFL, the NFL is good for Madden

by KansasCityShuffle on Sep 25, 2008 7:41 PM CDT   0 recs

Yes

Madden plays a signifigant part in the popularity of the NFL. Whenever I am coaching my DBs and they don’t understand something (remember, I am canadian, football isn’t too big here) I always make a reference to Madden and the kids understand.

by Ben S on Sep 25, 2008 7:44 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Hah!

Yes, nothing like having 3 of the top 5 picks in the draft. I still have a hard time resisting that, and I must admit that occasionally I cave in still.

by Ben S on Sep 25, 2008 7:42 PM CDT   0 recs

Screw top picks

Their rookie contracts are outrageous. My main goal with being Chiefs is keeping salary cap low. So in actuality I never really sign my draft picks, cut them all, let them hit free agency and then when they’re made an offer I top it to retain them. This reduces salaries by millions and keeps contracts a little more realistic. Also, a good tip for managing contracts is to edit their positions which will drop their overall rating and their price. Sign them and return them to their original position for a reduced cost

by KansasCityShuffle on Sep 25, 2008 7:46 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Smart

Never thought of that, but a good idea. My favorite move is drafting a tackle and moving him inside to gaurd because they usually are 89 – 90 as a rookie, a very good way to shore up the line. However, a very expensive gaurd.

I Leave It On

Mainly because the cap is part of the real-life competition and I like it. Although I only play on “Pro” level so it’s not like I go for ultimate realism :)

I used to play Pro setting

But being the stat-junkie I am, was tired of winning Super Bowl every year and throwing for over 3,500 regardless of what QB I used. Then I switched to All-Madden setting, 6 minute quarters and things got a lot more realistic. It went from winning every game to actually being involved in EACH game, each down because your opponent is actually good. Nothing like adrenaline from running a 2 minute drill when your coming from behind…

Devard's came up huge for me

He’s my “project player” in the receiving corps. He has a real low rating in 07 and I use him in the catching drill in the offseason every year to increase his overall. He’s not terribly fast (a la Parker or Hall) but has strength which stretches tackles several more yards….typically into the end zone! He’s my #2 to keep in line with our current roster

by KansasCityShuffle on Sep 25, 2008 7:50 PM CDT   0 recs

I've played

Madden 05-08 on my PC. I’ll be back to playing 08 on the PC once I fix my video slowdown issues and buy a new copy of the game (since the disc broke during the move into my apartment last month). I’d be playing 09, except EA decided to be assholes and take football away from PC gamers this year.

I play like KansasCityShuffle plays – one realistic franchise and one built completely through the fantasy draft. My roster makeover of the “realistic” franchise always seemed to include trading Law and Surtain for younger corners and then dumping Huard, Nap Harris, Greg Wesley, Chris Terry, Kyle Turley and Sackintosh – sometimes through trades, sometimes just outright cutting them – and finding young guys to plug into those spots. Also, just for the hell of it, I loved developing Medlock into the best kicker in the league.

I need to update my Madden 09, actually…I’ve still got Chris Manderino on my roster instead of Mike Cox. Since Cox has been one of the few bright spots on our offense this season, I think he merits a promotion to my Madden squad :)

I've Got That Too, But Haven't Played It

Came with the Madden 20th anniversary edition I bought. Haven’t really had much time to play Madden either, which is why I’m only to my second season. Been busy at home so really the only video game I seem to have time for is Guitar Hero III, since it’s not an hourlong investment to play a game (and I hate playing short games on Madden because I like the defensive stats to be somewhat realistic).

I’ll give NFL Head Coach 09 a look as well, eventually. Heard you can create your own plays and import them to Madden.
