Allen was never completely at risk?

JARED ALLEN OUT OF THE SUBSTANCE ABUSE PROGRAM

Posted by Mike Florio on September 25, 2008, 9:45 a.m.

Every Vikings fan can now exhale.  Defensive end Jared Allen is no longer one crazy Friday night away from a one-year suspension.

Per the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Allen is out of the league’s substance abuse program.  Moving forward, a positive test will not subject him to a suspension.

“I don’t have to tell them where I travel to anymore,” Allen said.  “I’m back to being a normal citizen in the NFL.”

Allen doesn’t have to keep the league informed as to his whereabouts because “membership” in the program requires players to be available at a moment’s notice for an unannounced test.

Though it makes Allen’s day-to-day life easier, the absence of the constant threat of a drug and alcohol test means that the temptation to get reacquainted will the Reverend Al K. Hall could return.  And so it’s now more important that ever, in our view, for Allen to remain dedicated to avoiding the liquid poison that nearly derailed his NFL career.

I know he could revisit/relapse (or whatever you want to call it) with Mr. Jack Daniels.  The problem is that Petersen led me (and the rest of Chiefs nation) to believe that the reason he wasn't signed to a long-term deal was because of the risk he'd be suspended.  Who knew he'd be out of the suspension woods 4 weeks into the season?  I didn't.  Someone can let me know if I am overreacting but isn't this a bit questionable?....

(disclaimer:  I am definitely of the mind we got the better deal. Just liked Jared)

We could use the pass rush but..

My family and my wife’s family both have people in them with a history of alcohol abuse and even when they get right there are usually relapses. So maybe seeing what it does to people shades my perspective but I didn’t want anything to do with him after that.

I still think we got the better end of the deal on the Allen trade anyway, we have too many needs at this point that the trade helped us with.

Meh

We’ll see what happens. And I don’t think the problems were just about our hesitance to sign him because of the alcohol problems…I think that he just really wanted out of the Chiefs badly. Can’t really blame him either judging from what’s happening this season.

It wasn't the drinking

it was the MONEY. Allen got paid like he was the best defensive player in the NFL. The Vikings think he is, the Chiefs don’t. He was my favorite player, and even I don’t think he is the best defensive player in the league.

Contracts

The key to rating what a player is worth with his contract is to judge not by what comparable players are paid in the past but based off a projection of what sort of contracts comparable players will sign over the duration of that contract…then get the player to sign for less. Do I think the Vikings overpaid him? No…not really. He was an extremely productive player during his time here, and his career progression and production is actually comparable to that of some Hall of Fame caliber players at the same point in their career. Bruce Smith is the closest comparison I’ve found…over his career so far he has exactly one sack less than Bruce Smith did with slightly lower tackle numbers but with significantly more forced fumbles.

Basically, he looks overpaid now, but in two more years he may actually be getting a fairly average wage for his position. It’s important to remember that in the NFL contracts usually go up over time…they don’t stay static.

God Crawford.

If we’d kept Allen, you’d be saying how he was overrated and actually a bust somehow. We get rid of him? HE’S THE NEXT BRUCE SMITH, OMG, CARL PETERSON YOU’RE SUCH AN IDIOT.

The guy has always been a problem child. There’s brash and outspoken and then there’s reckless. Allen falls into that latter category. We’re lucky to be rid of him. A few more sacks a year doesn’t mean that much.

You’re right, time will tell on him, but he’s going to end up looking like we were geniuses to dump him off on someone else.

Unlikely

Unless he performed like he was a bust. His numbers were good. Did it make sense for the Chiefs to keep him? Probably not and we got a good deal in trade so I’m not really complaining with the decision to move him…especially since he didn’t seem to want to be here.

I think you’re confusing me with someone else on the list because as far as I can recall I’ve never questioned Jared Allen’s abilities.

I've also

never seen you say something positive about a Chiefs player. Just going from experience, boyo.

Allen’s fine, but he doesn’t have the same kind of abilities as elite pass rushers. We’ll see how he does in Minnesota.

Incorrect

On NJ’s thread just a couple of days ago I said nice things about Branden Albert, Brian Waters, Pollard, and Page.

You just missed it because you only focus on the negatives :)

It's hard to see the trees

for the GIGANTIC PILE OF CRAP you pile on him every day, you know?

It's Just That King Carl Produces So Much Of It

I’ve got to put it somewhere…might as well be on him :)

Allen

I think he’ll be an outstanding end with them in Minnesota (barring injuries, of course, which nobody can really predict).

Of course

he’s on pace for 20 fewer tackles which would be a low since his rookie season, 10 sacks which isn’t bad but is 5 fewer than last year, and almost 5 fewer passes deflected.

But hey, I’m sure he’s just trying to get used to the Minnesota booze.

Small Sample Size

We can discuss it at the midway point if he looks like he’s still only getting 20 tackles for the year.

And by discuss it

you mean you’ll somehow pin it on Peterson, right?

Nope

Hate to burst your bubble but I don’t blame Peterson for poor performances by players on other teams :)

Yet.

Only When He Leaves To Run Another Team :)

Actually, when it gets to that point I won’t really even care because it won’t be our team getting saddled with underperformance related to him :)

And wait, small sample size

couldn’t you say that about the Chiefs season, too?

You Could Make That Argument

But I’m going to go out on a limb right now and predict that the Chiefs’ performance by the end of the season will probably not be all that much better than the Chiefs’ performances to start the season.

Not debating Allen's effectiveness

just wanted to discuss whether we were led down the wrong path. He wanted to leave – this is known, but reasons were put out there stating that Carl/Herm or whoever didn’t want to take a chance on him getting suspended if he lapsed again. Just interesting that it most likely wouldn’t have been an issue.
