A Few Questions With...TheSportsGuru, Broncos Blogger
Hello Chiefs fans, Guru here from Mile High Report welcoming you to Broncos/Chiefs week. As part of the cross-blogging that will be going on all week between MHR and AP, we figured we would create these FanPosts on each other's sites to answer any questions that were out there about each team.
Got a Broncos question? Fire away! I am looking forward to a great game Sunday. Regardless what the Main stream media might say, it is never easy in the AFC West and I don't expect it to be this weekend either. That will be the tone I set over at MHR as well. So good luck, and ask me any questions about the Broncos, the game, etc!
I'll check back in regularly to get those questions answered!
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Arrowhead Pride's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Arrowhead Pride writers or editors.

How happy are you Javon Walker is gone?
by Joel Thorman on Sep 22, 2008 6:49 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Answer
Ecstatic! Don’t get me wrong, Javon is an incredible talent, but he is a “me-first” player, and those guys are cancer in the locker room. Walker couldn’t handle the fact that Brandon Marshall was becoming Jay Cutler’s favorite target.
On a sidenote, to be fair to Javon, I think a parting from Denver was best for all parties after the death of Darrent Williams. I cannot imagine what that would be like, to have a teammate shot and die in your arms, and I don’t think Javon has ever recovered to this day. From that standpoint I hope Javon finds the peace he is looking for.
From a football standpoint, he now plays for the perfect team when it comes to selfish players who want the money, Oakland.

Is a generous line for the Chiefs.
by Joel Thorman on Sep 22, 2008 7:25 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Answer
I certainly am!!! If I know Mike Shanahan, he is too! One thing that helps the Broncos is this situation is the fact that they played so well in Kansas City last season. The Broncos, and their fans, know very well that Arrowhead has not been kind to the Orange and Blue, even during Elway’s career.
I expect the Chiefs to play very well this weekend and the Broncos need to be ready. Each week is a new learning experience for Jay Cutler, and this week it is a road game that the Broncos are expected to win. Cutler hasn’t been expected to win many games in his football career, coming from Vanderbilt. It’s new, and certainly not as easy as playing the role of the underdog. If the Broncos take the Chiefs lightly it could be very costly, so I think Denver will come prepared to play.

I don't think so
I may be in the minority in thinking this but the New Orleans game definately exposed flaws in our defense and offense, so I think the team will be focused since Kansas City is a division game, we know that regardless of records, the Chiefs will come to play, and it is important to get a road win in division to put space between us and San Diego.

Reception Record
Is Marshall going to get it?
by Joel Thorman on Sep 22, 2008 7:34 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Answer
This sounds cocky, but I think he will. As long as he stays healthy and all that jazz. Marshall is Cutler’s favorite target and Marshall is big enough and talented enough to get open. The two are building a similar chemistry to what we saw from Peyton Manning and Marvin Harrison. Cutler knows exactly where Marshall is at all times. The two left alot of yards on the field yesterday, between poor passes and a key drop.
I saw Marshall live during Training Camp when the Broncos were kind enough to let me on the field. No one can stop him, including Champ Bailey. He’s listed at 6-4, but he looks and plays much bigger. He’s a freak.
The funny thing is, Marshall, when asked before the season about his goals for the season he said 140 catches. That would put him 3 short, but I think I know what he was getting at.
For those reasons, I think Marshall, in 15 total games, will break the reception record.

Another Broncos Fan Opinion
There is no way. Even with The Beasts amazing first game, he still needs 120 catches over the next 13 games. That would be over 9 catches a game. Even for The Beast a 9 catch game is a very good game (he only had 6 last week, and probably won’t need that many this week for the Broncs to win). All of that to say for Marshall to get the record he can not have a single bad game, or heaven forbid be dinged up for a game, and in this league that is just impossible. The emergence of Eddie Royal and Tony Scheffler help a lot (keep the defenses honest), but I still don’t see it happening. Maybe next year when he has the full 16 games, and Royal, Schef He and Jay have an even better chemistry going and the young guys are more established.

Another Brandon Marshall question
There’s a lot of reports out there about his run ins with the law. Is there any fear of him missing any more games this season?
I strive to be the person my dog thinks I am.
by KCking on Sep 22, 2008 8:02 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Answer
Marshall shouldn’t miss any more time for any of that acts that are in the past. Even the latest story that popped up late last week was an old story from 6 months ago and one that the NFL was already aware of. Unlike Pac-Man or Tank Johnson or Chris Henry, Marshall crimes have more to do with poor judgment in his personal life than an infatuation with weapons or strip clubs. Marshall is a good guy, and with a strong supporting cast around him, starting with Rod Smith, Mike Shanahan and even Jay Cutler, I think Marshall’s transgressions are a thing of the past.

I can take that one.
I went to college in Colorado, where I obtained my masters in political science. I’m an associate editor over at MHR.
Colorado is a great blend of right and left. Water rights are a major issue, since much of the agricultural needs of surrounding states depend on Colorado’s water supply from mountain water. Colorado has a high military population, with everything from Ft. Carson to the Air Force Academy to NORAD being in place (as well as many military retirees). The state has interests ranging from environmental activists on one side, to hunters and ranchers on the other. Colorado also has several major colleges and universities to complicate the political landscape. Colorado Springs plays host to several major activist Chrisitan groups, including (most notably) Focus on the Family.
Colorado is really divided down the middle in terms of political outlook. Most political scientists seem to see Colorado as the battleground state for the ’08 national election.
As far as being smug goes, it comes with the 3-0 territory. It would be cool if you had the class that the other KC fans at this site show. I have a lot of respect for KC and the KC fans, but I guess every fanbase has a few losers.

So, uh...
any chance we could trade you guys Croyle/Darling for Cutler/Royal?
Seriously, though – what’s up with the lack of defense? Just like the Chiefs’ D this year, I thought the Broncos were supposed to have improved on that side of the ball. At least you have the offense to go “Screw it, we’ll just win the shootout.”
by Seth_C on Sep 22, 2008 11:40 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
That is a good question
No chance in hell. Cutler is our next Elway and will be the face of the franchise for the next decade.
As far as the D is concerned, the scheme is new, the D-Coordinator is new, at least 6 of the starters are new or playing in new positions, and the emphasis has been real heavy on the offense of late. The run defense is vastly improved over last year, in that it exists. However, the pass rush is still missing and it is letting good QBs rack up the yards. Against mediocre offenses, the defense should look OK, but against good offenses it will get burned big time. I think as the year goes on and the players and coach gel together, the defense will improve, but it needs an infusion of talent to become good. Nobody expects much from the defense until at least next year after a defense focused draft.
by unkown on Sep 23, 2008 3:44 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'll also add...
That the Broncos were horrible against the run last season so they are really selling out to stop it this year. So far, so good. I think Shanahan will deal with some inadequacies in pass defense right now if it means getting more possessions for his offense.

Great questions, allow me.
IMO-
Right now I would say Ryan Clady. He dosn’t get the attention Eddie Royal gets. After all wide recievers are glory boys, while O-linemen never get the credit they deserve. He hasn’t allowd a sack this year while he has played the likes of Mario Williams, Demarcus Ware, Anthony Burgess and the San Diego D.
To answer your second question I would have to say Dre Bly. He does not know how to tackle, and probably couldn’t cover my 2 year old. Next years draft will be focused on a Mike linebacker and our secondary guaranteed. Koutovides and Webster are not cutting it for Bronco Nation. Thats just my humble opinion.

Truth is....
He had a fairly painful injury that day (Cant remember where, but I think his bicept) But as he says it affected his attention on the test. He has adjusted well to the NFL but can use some time in the weight room. He is by no means one of the stronger LT’s. His feet really help him out. He is known as “sweet feet” in the locker room for a reason. While he may not be the smartest kid in the classroom, his play on the field speaks for itself.
Also he needs alot of work in his run blocking, but no lineman ever gets it their first year in the Broncos run blocking system. Usually Shanny has them ride pine for the first 2 years to learn the system in and out.
Cheers to a healthy game.

Wonderlic
Wonderlic scores are nonsense. As sad as it is, it doesn’t take a genious to get football, or to play very well. That being said, Clady looks to be a damn solid pick, especially for a rookie.

The general rule
The closer to the ball you are before it is snapped (QB, Linemen) the higher your score is. So WRs, TEs and RBs aren’t usually as high.

Answer
Denver_Native is right on the money with Clady. If he played in NY or any of the other big markets you wouldn’t hear the end of it. Think Joe Thomas last year. Clady has been awesome thins season and gotten little, if any, national attention.
The interesting part about your second question is how many people I could have answered with a few months ago. Jason Elam, John Lynch are just a couple names I think of when talking about over-rated. Both were great players once, but not anymore, not in Denver at least. Of Course, neither is a Bronco anymore, so Bly is a nice selection as well.

How do people in Denver view Shannahan?
Aroudn here, at least, he is viewed as an asshole… to say the least. Does he come off the same way to the fans in Denver? Or are his smug views fogged by the winning after being canned from Oakland? Answer
Coaches and quarterbacks get way too much credit when a team wins, too much blame for the losses. Shanahan is no different. That said, Shanahan the coach is brilliant. What he did last year with a team that was no better talent wise than the Chiefs, or Raiders, was amazing. The Broncos could have easily fell to 4-12 or 5-11 but they didn’t. Being a displaced Broncos fan, I think I have a greater appreciation for Shanahan than alot of fans in Denver proper, but 2008 has seen his stock rise again, as both a coach and a personnel guy.
Shanahan will be in Denver as long as HE wants to be.

He’ll get canned with one bad season? He ran the personnel guys out of town so he has no one else to blame if that happens.

3 or 4 wins??
The Broncos worst season in the past 20 years was a 5-11 mark in 1990. The team did go 2-7 in the strike-shortened 1982 season, but you have to go back to 1971 to find a 4 win season.

My view
Shannan is a very good coach, I think his biggest drawback has been talent evaluation, granted the draft class of 06’ and 08’ are shaping up to be great, but we have had a series of bad to awful drafts in the past and some of the guys he has broughtin as free agents have been aweful. I think he has learned his leason and now he looks more for good character guys as opposed to just talented or guys who have measurables.

One more
Honestly, if it comes down to a division race late in December, do you feel like the Broncos are a better team than the Chargers? Or more accurately, I guess, is your schedule set up for the Broncos to win the division? I know the Chargers are playing a 1st place schedule.
by Joel Thorman on Sep 23, 2008 5:56 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I think that it will all depend on our defences ability to adjust.
If they can either bring in a playmaker or learn to work with what they have I think this offense could carry us past the Chargers to the postseason.

Honest Answer
The Chargers have more talent on their roster than the Broncos. That’s just the truth. AS it has played out, however, the Broncos have a 2 game lead on teh Chargers, and when there are only 16 games it is never too early to talk about controlling their own destiny and things like that. That’s why games like this Sunday are so important. The Broncos can’t take the Chiefs lightly, and they can’t slip up. Similarly, the Chargers play at Oakland and cannot afford to slip either.
While the Chargers do play a first place schedule, the Broncos play a 2nd place schedule and that only affects 2 games. The Chargers get to go to Pittsburgh and have a home game with Indy. The Broncos go to Cleveland and have a home game with Jacksonville. Perhaps slightly harder for the Chargers, but Jacksonville beat the Colts and Pittsburgh only beat Cleveland by 4. Pretty even indeed.

Hard to say
My guess is that provided we stay relatively healthy, I like our chances, I think the offense will get better through the year and we have a guy coming back mid-season in ryan Torain that will be the feature back by the end of the year, so the offense could be scary. That being said, the defense must improve for us to think about winning the division and advancing in the playoffs.
The Chargers do play a first place schedule, but I think that may be somewhat easier in that they have to play Indy (winable) and Pittsburgh (tough) versus us playing Jacksonville (tough) and Cleveland (winnable). So don’t know if there is a severe disadvantage to their schedule.

Cornerbacks
I saw the earlier comments re: Dre Bly as the most under-rated player on the team.
So then, do the Broncos have the the best corner tandem in the NFL?
by Joel Thorman on Sep 23, 2008 6:03 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Cornerbacks
I actually think that he was saying that Bly is the most overrated player on out team. Before the season I thought we might have a shot at that title, but I am rethinking that.
To answer your second question I would have to say Dre Bly. He does not know how to tackle, and probably couldn’t cover my 2 year old.

Whoops, overrated
I knew that…mix up.
Jammer/Cromartie are looking real good. Even DeAngelo Hall and Nmandi Asomugha.
Shoot, they may not be the best in West which is saying something. Our tandem, Brandon Flowers and Brandon Carr, are still a few years away but they’ll be good.

My Questions Would Be
1) Do you feel that Shanahan’s effectiveness as a coach has been somewhat undermined by him pulling double duty as the GM, and 2) what do you think of Shanahan’s ability to rate players outside of running backs?
Supporting the lesser of two evils is still supporting something evil.

Answer
I have always thought that Shanahan, The GM has underminded Shanahn, The Coach. The drafts from 2000-2004 were simply awful and really affected teh competitiveness of the team. What turned this all around was the selection of Cutler, or should I say, the decision to go after the QB of the future coming off a trip to the AFC Championship Game. I have said that signaled the rebuilding or reloading effort in Denver. That’s when Shanny, The Coach, steps in. While getting a new QB to play, while turning over 80%+ of the roster, he kept the Broncos at .500 – 9-7, 7-9. IN 2005, the Broncos were the oldest team in football. Now, they Broncos are on of the 6 or 7 youngest. The Broncos have re-dedicated themselves to building a team through the draft. Shanny the Coach and Shanny the GM are doing an awesome job and have the Broncos on their way up….

How About On The Defensive Side Of The Ball?
Right now, the defense appears to be the weak spot on the team and it doesn’t seem that the Broncos are getting all that much out of defensive players they draft. What do you think about Shanahan’s ability to find and draft good college players on the defensive side of the ball?
Supporting the lesser of two evils is still supporting something evil.

Answer
The defense is still suffering from the failures of drafts past. Tragedy has also struck the Broncos defensive picks with the murder of Darrent Williams. Shanahan has actually done a good job draft defensive players like Trevor Pryce, Monte Reagor, Bertrand Berry, Reggie Hayworth, etc. The problem is he hasn’t kept them.
Now, with the youth on the defensive line, it is too early to tell on guys like Jarvis Moss, Tim Crowder and Marcus Thomas.
This year’s draft saw several defensive players that appear to be solid, with Jack Williams, Carlton Powell and Spencer Larsen. I think the Broncos will go heavy into the defense in the 09 draft as well.

Our next 3 drafts...
…will be VERY defense-centric.
Our offense is extremely young at every postion but C and one G. And we may already have a legitimate backup at both. Besides Stokley (WR), Weigmann/Nalen ©, and Hamilton (G), we don’t have a starter on offense that has more than 3 years in the NFL.

1-2
I know blown calls are part of the game and go both ways, but since the Broncos benefited from a couple of them is it relevant for people to point out that this team could very well be 1-2 right now?
by Joel Thorman on Sep 23, 2008 9:45 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
A Couple??
Personally, I don’t think it is, but if people want to that’s fine with me.
As for a couple of calls, I imagine you are talking about an un-called neutral-zone infraction against the Saints? That was so close to call it’s ridiculus. I’ve seen the still-frame picture of it, taken right at the snap, but that isn’t football. There are infractions on every play, and Jamie Winborn, who is the one that appears to be off-side, had nothing to do with the play. Besides, and I firmly believe this, so go ahead a quote me — If a team cannot line up and get a yard, 1 frickin yard, then they don’t deserve to win. If the same thing happens this weekend, and the Chiefs stop the Broncos on a 4th and to decide the game, even if the officiating is just awful, I’ll say it.
When it comes to the Hochuli call, it was unfortunate. I don’t like the game coming down to plays like that. Again, I have a motto. Don’t ever let the game come down to a decision by a referee or umpire or official. Take care of business. Sure, if Hochuli gets the call right, the Chargers win. Well, if the Chargers hadn’t given up 500 yards of offense they win too. Worry about what you can control and make sure you are never in a situation to let an official decide the game. Again, I know it might seem easy for me to say since the Broncos benefitted, but I guaruntee I’d say the same thing if roles were reversed.
Again, the MSM can call us 1-2 if it makes them feel better. All that matters is the number in the left-hand column, and that is 3.

Gotta disagree
If we’re looking at the same still shot then he was definitely offsides. As Payton said, that’s not really a judgment call and should have been called.
There are infractions on every play, and Jamie Winborn, who is the one that appears to be off-side, had nothing to do with the play. Besides, and I firmly believe this, so go ahead a quote me — If a team cannot line up and get a yard, 1 frickin yard, then they don’t deserve to win.
The point is that if the offsides call were made it would have been a first down. I know blown calls are part of the game, and I’m not trying to discredit the Broncos because they did put up 34 points, but I just wanted to hear your opinion on what others might be saying about the Broncos luck.
by Joel Thorman on Sep 23, 2008 10:16 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
OK.....say it is called...
He still has to kick the field goal. All the Saints were going to do was run the ball up the middle 2 times and kick it on 3rd down. There is NO WAY to compare the two situations. There is no guaruntee that Gramatica kicks the 40 yard FG when he missed the 43 yard field goal wide right….
The thing about the off-side call is this. NO ONE NOTICED IT IN REAL TIME. NO ONE. It wasn’t brought up until the next day, when broken into stills….I can make alot of things look any way I want if I break it down to still frame….
If it was so egregious, why didn’t Joe Buck, or Troy Aikman, or ANYONE ON SUNDAY mention it??

I'll say this...
It doesn’t bother me if people want to say 1-2 or any of that, it really doesn’t. If that helps them sleep better, fine. The problem I have, is when you talk to former players they all say the same thing. The Chargers had a chance to make a play and didn’t. The Saints had a chance to make a play, and didn’t. If teams want to rely on the referees, they probably aren’t a good football team to begin with…

I can understand people’s frustration with the ‘fumble that wasn’t’ during the SD game.
However, this crap about the missed offsides call has got to be one of the most ridiculous things I’ve ever heard. As Guru said, you can go through almost every play of the game and point out missed calls. You can also argue that half the calls that are made aren’t good calls. Broncos fans may point out that NO’s was clearly short on one of their TDs and many of us question whether Scheffler’s fumble was really a fumble (one of those plays that is not going to be overturned if they called it complete or not). It’s pretty petty once we’re talking about missed neutral-zone infraction calls. Also like Guru mention, in the still shot you can see he was over the line; however, NOBODY at the game or while watching the game caught it.

That's been my point
Nobody brought it up during or right after the game, only a day later, more of a coach whining over a poor play call.

Can't pick and choose
If the Sain’ts kick had gone through (assuming the Broncos didn’t go straight down the field and score, which is at least possible, if not likely) we would just be talking about how the Broncos got what was coming to them… has anybody else seen the pictures of Dumervil being bear-hugged by a Saint offensive lineman on the field goal. And I’m sure there were dozens of other calls that weren’t made in EVERY game this weekend and last and since the beginning of time! LET IT GO! THAT’S FOOTBALL!!!

Two Questions:
1. Who do you think you are?
2. What gives you the right?
hahaha… j/k. Real Question:
Our CB Brandon Flowers and your WR Eddie Royal both went to VaTech and likely scrimmaged against each other many times. Although it looks like Brandon Flowers will likely end up matched against Marshall most of the game, what do you know about the history of practice matchups between Flowers and Royal and who gets the best of that matchup in a game?
by Sudden on Sep 23, 2008 10:53 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I really don't know
But I do remember that Coach Beamer said Royal was probably the best football player he has ever coached, which says a lot. The problem with Royal coming out of college is that he never really had a good QB and the VT offense was very plain and run orientated, so there wasn’t a lot of hype on him. But getting to practice against top compition should have helped Royal and Flowers.

Broncos will wax the Chiefs
As much as I don’t want the Broncos to win, let’s face it. 3-0 good team with highest point offense in the league is playing 0-3 team that’s at the bottom of the barrel right next to the horrible Rams. From a betting point of view, I will take the Broncos any day! From a fan point of view, I would love the Chiefs to get their first win (in 11 months) and hand the Broncos their first loss of the season. I’ve been a Chiefs fan all my life regardless of the fact that I moved to Denver almost 10 years ago. I am taking my wife and daughter to the game this weekend but something tells me it’s going to be a disappointing trip. +50-14, Broncos.

No questions......Just wanted to say.........
I think you guys are a class act over here. Other than a couple guys you have all been good sports. I know that we are division rivals but I can honestly say I have always rooted for the Chiefs to do well unless they were playing the Broncos. I ALWAYS want the Chargers and faders to lose whether the Broncos are still in the hunt or not, but I have never gotten there with the Chiefs for some reason. Probably because they always have played us hard and there never really was any bad blood that I can remember. But just so you know, when the Broncos are out of it I will pull for the Chiefs, and the classy individuals I have seen over here and this week at MHR have reinforced that for me. Hopefully you guys get a good team to root for in the next few years. As a coach I love the good clean hard fought rivalries the best. Hope it comes about soon. That being said good luck to you all this Sunday, hope it is a good clean FUN game.

I don’t live in Denver, however it will always be Mile High. Unfortunalty naming rights is the best way to get a new stadium built. For KC fans sake, I hope it stays Arrowhead because it would be weird seeing a company’s name in front of Arrowhead.

Thanks to the Chiefs fans
KC has good fans with a lot of class. KC intrigues me, as I have always been fascinated with the long range strategies used in the NFL to rebuild. So far, avoiding quick fix free agents has worked out well for KC. I am very curious to see how their rounds 1 through 4 decisions are made next spring.
Yeah, I am a Denver fan, but it is hard to have bad feelings for a team that wears scarlet and gold, the official colors of the USMC. Hope all the players avoid the injury bug and we all have a fun game to watch.
