The Chiefs need a solid backup option, because I think we absolutely, positively need to give up on the idea that Tyler Thigpen is a future option. I simply cannot agree with anybody who says that he’s shown flashes of brilliance.

Home of the Chiefs | Chiefs Waiver Pick-Ups That Make TOO Much Sense

Here here Jon! I've have not been as critical of Tyler Thigpen as I should have been. IMO, he is barely a third string NFL quarterback (if that) and it's a bit scary he's our #2 right now.

I agree

I think we all know that Huard is our real #2 QB… if Brodie goes down I would be very surprised to see Thigpen go into the game no matter where either is listed on the depth chart.

Did anyone pick up

Brad Gradkowski?

by Lanier63 on Sep 2, 2008 9:21 AM CDT   0 recs

he didn't look too horrible

but I don’t think he looked much better than Thigpen, and I don’t see us replacing Huard with another young guy until next season at the earliest.

Thigpen Reminds Me

of Mike McMahon, a QB from Rutgers who tooled around the NFL for awhile. He had his uses (mobility and a strong arm) but he was so inconsistent with his accuracy and such a poor game manager that he wasn’t someone you’d want starting any games unless you were completely desperate. Basically Thigpen is the poor man’s Mike McMahon.

I remember Mike McMahon

Another guy with the physical tools who couldn’t cut it. I thought he was going to be good. Where did he end up, Detroit or Chicago or something?

by primetime 07 on Sep 2, 2008 10:39 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Detroit, Philly, Minnesota, Then CFL

I may be a little off on the order. He was in Minnesota in 2006 and I think he’s been in the CFL since then. I remember he’d be impressive in one game then either disappear or be horrible the next two or three. He was really only an option in Detroit because Joey Harrington was such a terrible quarterback.

by UCrawford on Sep 2, 2008 10:51 AM CDT   0 recs

I Suppose

That the reason McMahon struggled may have had something to do with the fact that he only had one season in college where he completed 50% of his throws or better. His career completion percentage for Rutgers was 49.4%

http://www2.jsonline.com/packer/rev/apr01/quarterback-mikemcmahon.asp

Here’s the really sick thing about it, Matt Millen drafted a guy that should have struggled to get picked up as an undrafted free agent with a 5th round pick. And I thought Carl Peterson was clueless about evaluating rookie QBs.

And we know completion percentage

Is a statistic that is generally a solid barometer for NFL success.

by primetime 07 on Sep 2, 2008 2:54 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

As Much As Anything Is

There have been QBs with solid completion numbers in college that have fared poorly in the pros (Andre Ware being a key example). But I can’t think of any quarterback with a competion percentage below 50% in college who ever made it as a pro. Just a mind-bogglingly stupid pick by Matt Millen even in the 5th round.

Thigpen has potential

IMO, Thigpen has a great deal of potential and I think we just need to commit to keeping him around a couple of years to give him the opportunities and preseason snaps. He got his first significant playing time this preseason, and I think if we can use him in mop up duty, sub him in for trick plays (I really feel like Chan has something in store for this guy this season like that), and let him develop in camp/pracitces, he could be the next Romo. Remember, Romo spent three years playing nothing but preseason games before they finally threw him into the starting role and his abilities speak for themselves. Thiggy has managed to orchestrate some late game drives, one to win the game, after throwing picks. That shows the kind of mental toughness and gamer attitude that is the most important part of winning in the NFL.

by Sudden on Sep 2, 2008 2:37 PM CDT   0 recs

Maybe

But it took five years for Tony Romo to be ready to start for his team, and he was a better QB than Thigpen in college.

"Intangibles"

And “mental toughness” and “gamer attitudes” are nice, but unless they’re backed up by an ability to consistently execute the gameplan the coaching staff asks you to execute intangibles don’t really mean a lot. So far, Thigpen has not demonstrated an ability to do that.

by UCrawford on Sep 2, 2008 3:10 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I don't see a problem

with keeping a guy like Thiggy as a third-stringer, meaning he is not gonna take a single regular season snap that matters while we try and develop him (Huard will be a fine backup this season). Those intangibles are hard to coach, and he also has the physical tools to succeed in terms of both mobility and arm-strength.

by Sudden on Sep 2, 2008 5:17 PM CDT   0 recs

Tools

Scouts and GMs often get enamored with “measurables” or “tools”…like how much the guy can bench-press or how fast he can run or how hard he can throw. Personally, I think it’s a very limiting viewpoint. Don’t get me wrong, athleticism is great, but I think that sometimes people get so awed by somebody’s physical attributes that they fail to realize that skills like accuracy, and decision-making, and instinct are also tools (albeit less visibly impressive ones) and that they’re often as important (and sometimes more important) than physical tools. So far I’ve seen some impressive physical tools for Tyler Thigpen but very little in the way of skills, so while I don’t have a problem with Thigpen being the third-string QB for this team I also don’t think that the Chiefs should invest all that much in him and that they should be seriously looking for somebody who’s less of a project.

When you absolutely positively have to have a new back up quarterback...

I am shocked that the Chiefs have left this position untouched during the first waiver period. Now is the time to add someone, anyone, who can hit a wide receiver 25 yards down field at least 60 percent of the time. I agree Thigpen has athletic potential, but I don’t think that it will get realized at the quarterback position. I think that if Brodie “Prove me wrong” Croyle goes down, then there goes our season as fragile as it is. The quarterback position is crucial for our hopes of SB XXXXXX or beyond, so lets get SOMEONE who has potential to be a Brady or Manning. If it is Croyle, then please forgive me, but if it is not him then let us have someone in the pipeline.

Franchise Caliber QBs

Are very rarely found on the waiver wire, so I wouldn’t get too angry with the Chiefs for not grabbing someone after the preseason. The options were basically Culpepper, Leftwich, Harrington, Simms and a bunch of other guys who’d either flopped elsewhere as starters or who had never demonstrated any ability to be a starting QB. Doesn’t mean it’s a bad idea to keep looking of course, just that you shouldn’t fault the Chiefs for not dumping Thigpen for the first warm body :)

by UCrawford on Sep 2, 2008 9:56 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

True

It is just so frustrating to sit and watch them do nothing when you know they should do something! Maybe they didn’t think anyone out their had more potential than Thiggy or maybe they didn’t want to pay to find out?

by TheQ on Sep 2, 2008 10:05 PM CDT   0 recs

"Doing Something" Isn't Necessarily A Good Thing

Sometimes if there aren’t good options it’s fine to let things ride for a bit. I’m not a big fan of Croyle or Thigpen, but I don’t think there’s anything out there worth pursuing that would likely be better than either of them (or Huard) so I’m fine with them standing pat with what they’ve got for now.

A situation to watch, though, would be Green Bay if Aaron Rodgers gets hurt (as he’s been prone to do) because they’ve got two rookies backing up Rodgers and no vets. I doubt there’s a chance in hell we’ll get Brian Brohm out of the situation, but we could end up with Matt Flynn, who’s not guaranteed to be a good NFL QB option but is probably a better option than Thigpen.

Flynn is #2

Last I heard Flynn had beat out Brohm for the back up spot. Now I am really confused because i thought Brohm was pretty good?! Where have all the good quarterbacks gone?

by TheQ on Sep 3, 2008 8:43 PM CDT   0 recs

Brohm's A Rookie

And apparently he was really shaky in his preseason time. I don’t think it really means much, though…I think Brohm’s got a lot more upside than Flynn, so while Flynn may be better right now in two years I think Brohm will probably be the best QB on the Green Bay roster.

If Green Bay's Willing To Part With Brohm For Less Than A First Rounder (Or Maybe Even A 1st Rounder)

We should be on that offer like white on rice.

Don't know much about Brohm

Wasn’t he characterized as a system quarterback?

by primetime 07 on Sep 3, 2008 10:49 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I actually thought

we might trade down and draft Brohm if Dorsey or Ellis hadn’t fallen to us…

by PVChiefsfan on Sep 4, 2008 7:52 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

If we wound up

With Flynn would we be the KC-LSU Tigers or the LSU Chiefs?

by Eric Allen on Sep 3, 2008 9:34 PM CDT   0 recs

LSU head coach Les Miles

Would have to be listed as one of our assistant coaches in the program at that point.
