T-Gon = T-GONE?
In a recent article by USA Today about the superb accomplishments throughout his career as a Kansas City Chief, Tony references seriously considering retiring at the end of next season.
According to the native of Torrance, Calif., he is leaning heavily toward retiring at the end of next season. A chance for an elusive Super Bowl ring could change his mind, though.
So. Another reason to stay with these young guys and get better. Get this man a ring. I could care less about the coaches and organization, Tony truly deserves to get that ring. He will leave the game a winner, that is without a doubt.

We should've traded him to a contender before last years drafft.
I hope he gets a ring as well.Send him to the Eagles for a 1st or 2nd and Lito Sheppard.

He shouldn't have to go somewhere else
to get a ring. It can be done here, in the next two seasons.
have you seen my baseball?
I like the enthusiasm, but it ain't happening here in 2 years.
I hope you are right, I would love to celebrate a win in Super Bowl XLV. XLVII is more likely.

4 years??
You realize that is in four years and given the way that NFL team rosters rotate, many of the people in this “Rebuilding” aka shit show will no longer be on the team or will have been eligible for free agency, likely not being signed based on past histroty.
Free Agency
Assuming no new collective bargaining agreement is signed, free agency is pushed back to six years of service time, not four.

They actually had a great offense and a decent defense, not a patchy defense and a nightmarishly bad offense.

And Mike Martz
Offensive whiz. Pretty pumped to see what he does in SF this year.
Either he’s going to save Mike Nolan’s job. Or he’s going to try and take it.

Wait
We’re talking about Carl’s 5-year plan part deux, right?

Lito Sheppard?
Ugh…talk about a terrible return on your investment. The guy can’t stay healthy and he hasn’t played a full season since 2003 (or 15 games since 2004).
And nobody’s giving up a first-rounder for Tony G. He’s a complementary acquisition for a team that’s looking to build their receiving corps. A good team will likely figure they can find a cheaper option and a bad team won’t pay because he’s not a long-term solution. We might be able to get a third rounder for him from a contender, but I doubt it would go higher than that.

TG is worth
a 5th rounder at best IMO.

That's Probably More Realistic
The only way you’d get a 3rd rounder would be if the team looking to acquire was extremely desperate for a receiver and saw it as the final piece for a major Super Bowl push. There aren’t really any teams out there that fit that mold…most of the teams that are in that boat have options they could go to already at TE.

Teams That Would Want Tony G
Denver – already has Scheffler and Graham
San Diego – already has Gates
Indianapolis – Dwight Clark
Jacksonville – maybe…but they’re more likely to trade for o-line
New England – Ben Watson, and they’ve got other issues to address
Texans – Owen Daniels
Steelers – Heath Miller
Dallas – Jason Witten
Green Bay – Donald Lee + good receiving corps, so a 5th rounder probably, maybe a 4th
Minnesota – QB is the problem
Cardinals – not desperate at receiver
Seattle – desperate at receiver, Holmgren’s last year, but not good enough to contend
Tampa – maybe, but Gruden not prone to desperation trades
New Orleans – Shockey
Eagles – LJ Smith serviceable
Giants – maybe, but Kevin Boss showed promise as pass receiver

I was dumb to say 1st round guys, my bad.
The more I thought about it, the more sense you guys made. Indy has Dallas Clark not Dwight. I could see him going to the Eagles or Giants.

Whoops
I do that kind of brainfart with the names every once in awhile…if Indy had Dwight Clark they probably would be looking to trade :)

Giants And Jags Would Seem Best Bet To Me
As far as trade destinations go. I agree about the Giants…they could contend and want to defend their title and Boss is far from a sure thing. The Jaguars definitely need receivers but they’re so snakebit on that offensive line, though, I’m not sure they’ll be in contention and if they are a lineman would probably be a higher-priority target by the trade deadline.
Eagles seem like they could use him, but LJ Smith is a decent receiver and they just never seem to want to use the TE as a receiving option, so he may not be a good fit for them.
I could also kind of see Green Bay. Driver’s getting older and if they added Tony G that would be a stacked offense.

The Eagles pop out at me there
And Jacksonville.
Boy, the Eagles would be damn good with TG in there. Particularly because Kevin Curtis and Reggie Brown have been plagued by nagging injuries this year. (Actually, Curtis’ injury is putting him out for like 2 months I think).

Tony G is a Chief
Unlike some people who want to jump ship when things get bad and become a mercenary for other teams, Tony G is a Chief through and through. He saw the direction this team was going in when he resigned his contract and did it anyway.
I’m sure it bothers Tony G a lot that the Chiefs haven’t won a playoff game his entire career, but through it all, he came into the league a Chief and he wants to leave a Chief.
Ray Bourque
Whenever people talk about team guys who’ll never go elsewhere I just remember Ray Bourque from hockey. Quite possibly the best defenseman ever to play the game…people thought he’d spend his entire career with the Bruins (and he darn near did) because he gave his heart and soul to the team, but in the end he got traded to Colorado so he could win a championship there.
You never know what’s going to happen with players’ futures…even icons can end up somewhere else. If you’d asked a lot of Niners fans if in 1989 Montana would get sent to KC, they’d have said no way, he’d retire a 49er first.

Tony G
I don’t know whether to buy the article or not. Tony G said this preseason that unless he was injured, he planned to play at least this year and next because that was what was necessary to fulfill his contractual obligations without having to pay some of his signing bonus back and that depending on what shape the team was in at that time he could play longer.
Of course he could be changing his mind because of how poorly the team is playing, but TG has been around a long time. I don’t think he’s going to freak out after a couple games.
It says
he is seriously contemplating retirement at the end of the 09-10 season, not this year :)
However, if the team shows significant improvement (and hopefully some direction) by the end of this season, I could see him sticking around barring any injuries.
have you seen my baseball?
If you love something
let it go. He deserves to have a chance for the ring! Whatever we could get for Tony would be good for us. What about Philly? They are close and LJ Smith sucks!
Another Hall of Fame career wasted.....
If only we had the planets aligned when we had Vermeils offense with Schottenheimers Defense……….we would of been great…..
Chief from beginning to the end
I think from all I’ve read about his comments, he started a Chief and wants to finnish as a Chief. He absolutely wants to get the ring and be a part of it with the Chiefs, but I don’t think he has ever indicated that he would want to jump ship, just so that he gets the ring with another team. I can’t see it as a wasted career. It is because of who the Chiefs have been and because of all the receiving weaknesses that his career is what it is. You can’t say that he would have been better, or worse on another team, because he may not have been thrown to as much, or needed as badly as we have needed him.
The Chiefs organization would be more foolish than anyone gives them credit for, if they trade him just for a measly 3rd rounder or gap filler. His value as a playmaker, mentor, motivator, and even franchise icon is invaluable. Even now that he is a little older, he is actually better. I think Sun he will break the yardage record. As Brodie and Tyler improve, so will Tony and the entire team. Physically he is feeling better than ever, so he has the endurance and ability.
SB possibilities are – this year: NO, next year: highly doubtful, the following year: as good as it has been in 20 years…as long as we continue with the plan of drafting by position and playing quality young guys. Tony can hang for 2 more after this year, but I think that will be it for him if we don’t come close.
