What do we do IF Tyler Thigpen is actually GOOD?
While I was at work today I had a thought that literally stopped me in my tracks. I have been in the group that pretty much has decided that Thigpen is no good and never will be an NFL talent. His game last week was one of the worst QB performances I have seen in a long time, the only reason it was not the worst was because the DBs kept dropping sure interceptions thrown to them. But I got to thinking about how impressed the Chiefs and Vikings were with him as a project QB.
What would be really really interesting is if with a full week of practice with the first team offense and a game plan centered around him and his skills. What if Thigpen actually went out and had an above average game for an NFL QB? Even more troubling would be what if he actually won the game for us?
What in the world would Herm do if all of a sudden this project QB that he is throwing to the wolves started playing way beyond expectations and actually won a few games before Brodie was able to return to the lineup? The more I have thought about it I think the true reason we see Thigpen over Huard is that Herm doesn't want another QB to come in and win games with this team while Croyle is out. So just imagine if we had a QB controversy between the winning Thigpen and the never won a game Croyle.
Now I know this has almost no chance of happening but I just had to bring this up once it crossed my mind today.

Simple...
Ride the hot hand…so to speak…
If he plays good, which I doubt, we SHOULD continue to play him…

Hell freezes over...
Bin Laden turns himself in, Larry Flynt will produce the superbowl halftime show, OJ admits he did it, white folks learn to dance, PBR will taste like Bud Light, a UFO lands on the White House lawn, Elvis and Jimmy Hoffa are alive and well running a brothel in North Dakota….should I go on?

If ol' Bones plays well
I’d piss myself with joy.
Wouldn’t it be great if we had a difficult decision because of good performance rather than poor performance.
BTW, I don’t plan on wearing the Depends to the bar on Sunday.

If Thigpen Is Good
I’ll be happy for him and will say that he probably deserves a lot more playing time. But I refuse to get my hopes up that he will because frankly he’s looked awful in the rest of his playing time (except in preseason, which has no relevance to anything).
Supporting the lesser of two evils is still supporting something evil.

That's called
a high class problem. I’ll take a QB controversy any day because it means someone is actually playing well.

I watched the game again last night...
How? Not so sure, but on the scoring drive, from the shotgun, Thigpen showed some pretty good accuracy and had some nice throws. Rich Gannon seemed to have taken a special interest because I think he saw alot of him in Thigpen. I LOVED the long pass to Bowe down the sidelines not because it was our longest gain but because Tyler gave Bowe the chance to make a play. I also think his rollout ability is excellent (if we could get a running game going that could be deadly ala Jake Plummer). If he learns to plant his feet at the end and step into the throw then there are some possibilities.
Overall though, I just hope the kid does well.

I agree ...
with you. I hope Thigpen hangs in there and I hope our O-Line can give him some time in the pocket to make some throws. That will open up the run game and hopefully get LJ the carries he needs to be productive.

I just have this recurring nightmare
where our staring QB gets injured, then our backup comes in and starts to win games and takes us to the playoffs. Then the QB that was the starter at the beginning of the season and the one designated as “our” QB finally gets healthy right around playoff time. So they put him back in the lineup and he gets killed in the playoff game and we wait too long to put the QB that got us to the playoffs back in and end up losing the game.
But surely no team would actually take out the “hot” QB and go with the rusty guy who has hardly played that season for a playoff game, right?

Never!
And if an organization did it once, they would never make the same mistake again.

Thigpen
First of all I think you guys are being to hard on him. I mean he has showed a little promise and he is young, I’m not saying hes our QB of the future, but lets see what he does this week. And I don’t think you can judge him just yet on anything he has done. Other QB’s have been crap when they first started and turned out to have good carrers. And as far as a QB controversy? If Tyler plays well and wins a couple games and then Croyle comes back and is ready to go I think Herm is the type of guy that would put Croyle in because he says he’s the guy period. I think Herm is that stupid.

If Thigpen is halfway decent...
we should play him after Croyle comes back. I highly doubt that will happen because Herm has made is clear that Croyle is his guy. As far as I know, Thigpen hasn’t had a problem staying healthy @ Coastal Carolina or since he came into the NFL, but that could be because he hasn’t really played at all in the NFL. Brodie has been hurt 3 times in 7 starts. I don’t know about most of you but a 43% injury percentage is way too high for my liking. Also, I know this team is in a rebuilding mode, but losing like that last week to Oakland was demoralizing and I am just praying we don’t get killed this week too.

Thigpen
I think thus far Thigpen has shown more promise in his 1 game and the preseason then Croyle has done all last season and this preseason. I like the fact that Thigpen is much more mobile, which gives him the ability to scramble when needed. you can develop other things with him, like reading defenses and all that other good stuff. I think he’ll be a good qb. i actually wished they put him in the New England game when Croyle got hurt. I think Croyle was and is a flop.
