True story

A friend of ours just relocated to Napa. We got their wedding invitation in the post last week. It had an Oakland postmark on it. I was ordered to disinfect the post box and leave a note to the post lady not to deliver mail bearing an Oakland postmark in future.

(ok maybe the last bit wasn’t true, but we did consider it)

Get this

Last year during the preseason, I was at a family reunion of sorts where there are like a million cousins you’ve never met.

I sat down to eat and this father and son sit down next to me. The dad is wearing a USC hat and the son says, to my horror, “Daddy, can we watch the Raiders play?”

The dad responds cheerfully, “Not until 3:15 son!” Then some old guy wearing a Denver Broncos alumni hat walked in later. I had no idea what to do.

I am LOVING this whole Marques Hagans package.

When your offense is as bad as ours is, and when Damon Huard is an extremely limited QB, you might as well improvise.

Definitely a positive sign for traditionally conservative Herm.

Hopefully, we can throw in Thigpen next possession.

by rockchalk on Sep 14, 2008 12:15 PM CDT reply actions

Positive sign, yes...

…But on 2nd and 15, running it on a QB option when everyone on the Raiders knew he wasn’t passing was a little silly.

But still better than a 2 yard screen pass.

Please, Dear God, just put Thigpen in and don't look back.

I don’t even care if we lose, really, as long as it is with youth.

If we lose with Damon Huard playing absolutely terrible, then I won’t be able to take it.

Herm MUST GO!

This is a joke! Yeah we have young players, but they have played football before. This conservative bullshit is going nowhere ever!

by Eric Allen on Sep 14, 2008 12:31 PM CDT reply actions

Conservative play calling isn't what is hurting us.

Shit wide receivers who can’t get open, a gaping offensive line with swiss cheese holes, a running back who refuses to cut… Those are just a few of the real problems.

Banny being Banny.

The o-line was

just fine last week this team is going backwards!

Uh...

Did you watch the game last week?

by rockchalk on Sep 14, 2008 12:36 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes

And we hung with them with a chance to win at the end of the game.

by Eric Allen on Sep 14, 2008 12:38 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, but with no help from our O-Line.

Our O-Line wasn’t as terrible as last year, sure, but it was still pretty awful. The only one, IIRC, that graded out all that well at all was Branden Albert.

by rockchalk on Sep 14, 2008 12:40 PM CDT up reply actions

This team

Cannot even hang with the JayHawks, not that the Hawks are bad.

by Eric Allen on Sep 14, 2008 12:41 PM CDT up reply actions

Who?

The Chiefs or the Raiders?

Because I would agree that we are better than the Raiders, but not by all that much. And you could certainly make the argument that they have more pure athleticism and talent.

by JobDDT on Sep 14, 2008 12:35 PM CDT reply actions

Best news of the day, as far as I'm concerned.

Anyone is better than Damon Huard, IMO.

At least give him a chance. If he sucks, well, then cut him when Croyle comes back. If not, well we might have found a decent stopgap option next year while we develop a QB.

by rockchalk on Sep 14, 2008 12:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Relax

If you think LJ could have made that block on the sack last drive then you are dreaming. The playcalling is alright so far, our defense is playing well, and bthe o line is preforming as excpected. Relax and watch the game.

by Dan Holmes on Sep 14, 2008 12:38 PM CDT reply actions

Hope Huard is gonna come back in

He will be alright if they let him play a couple series in a row without any subs. Huard’s gonna throw interceptions, but he’s also gonna make plays. Honestly, he’s the best option we’ve got right now.

by mchief on Sep 14, 2008 12:42 PM CDT reply actions

maybe

but if the raiders get open shots at him all game he won’t make it through a half

by Walter Camp on Sep 14, 2008 12:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Why would the Packers get rid of him?

And who would they replace him with?

Brohm?

by rockchalk on Sep 14, 2008 12:48 PM CDT up reply actions

Oh, really?

Sorry.

I still think they will resign him longterm (or at least on a Brees-like one-year deal) but if he is available, I would hope we would offer him a very sizable offer, what with our incredibly large cap space (isn’t it like $40 million+) next year.

Oakland's secondary is looking really good.

But to be fair, they are facing the most untalented #2 WR in the NFL, Darling, and Bowe, who looks overwhelmed.

Unless the question is

who should we cut after once Brodie comes back?

by KCScuba on Sep 14, 2008 12:57 PM CDT up reply actions

But neither is Damon Huard.

And at least Thigpen, being young and all, has a chance, however miniscule it may be, to be a decent starting QB.

Huard? Nuh-uh.

by rockchalk on Sep 14, 2008 12:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Yea, Tyler Thigpen isn't looking too hot.

Forcing passes and the like.

But, honestly, our WRs are the ones who aren’t getting open, and I would rather have a QB at least trying to make plays and force balls than one who is simply willing to dump it off or throw it to the first row.

At this point, let’s just put in Hagans and let him run the normal offense. But I would rather have either of them over Huard; much higher chance of making plays.

by rockchalk on Sep 14, 2008 12:56 PM CDT reply actions

At the moment...

I feel like we have a better chance to score when they have the ball.

I thought Oakland was the worst team in the NFL, but the Chiefs are trying their best to prove me wrong.

How many times will Thigpen throw in to double and triple coverage?

How many times will we run up the gut on 1st down when Oakland has the line stacked?

How many (more) times will MacIntosh get smoked around the outside and force a hurry on our QB?

What happened to that offense we saw in the 1st week of the preseason?

Just in from Smoke.com

Herm Edwards and Lane Kiffen where let go after Sundays game in Kansas City. Kiffen immediately signed with KC as their new head coach. “I’m just happy I won a game and someone wanted me.”

OMFG

Banny being Banny.

That was a nice little drive.

Doesnt’ even come close to making up for the rest of the game, where a dead cat could have played better, but that at least showed us why he still has a roster.

Still, I think he is the one to go when Croyle comes back.

I especially love the jump pass.

please.

he’s strictly a placeholder. No business at all occupying an NFL roster, much less darkening the field during a regular season game

When you start throwing on 1st down

Good things CAN happen.

by JobDDT on Sep 14, 2008 2:51 PM CDT reply actions

Seriously.

Now that we are simply letting him air it out, we are actually driving.

Not very well, mind you, but a lot better than when we were simply giving him 2nd-and-9 to work with every series after a one-yard run up the middle.

Ugh.

Thigpen, horrible throw. GONZALEZ WASN’T EVEN LOOKING!

TRIPLE COVERED!

Ah.

There we go.

That looks more like Tyler Thigpen.

by rockchalk on Sep 14, 2008 2:55 PM CDT reply actions

I would say this was a productive game.

We figured out that Thigpen:

- Has happy feet.
- Throws into triple coverage… a lot.
- Is so set in his primary receiver he will throw it to the defensive player closest to his WR.
- He will make wide open players dive to the ground to dig up a ball that is underthrown.
- He cannot throw the ball away. It is physically impossible for him.

WOW.

Our D-Line is HORRIBLE.

Too many missed tackles by the safeties?

I think the real issue is that our safeties have to make all the tackles.
