Down Analysis: What the Chiefs Call By Down

09000d5d80a9658e_gallery_600_medium

I wanted to post these numbers before tomorrow's game so you can have more stats bouncing around in your head. A more detailed breakdown of what's been called by down in 2008 by the Kansas City Chiefs is after the jump.

Stats like this always help those discussions with friends when they mention stuff like, "The Chiefs always do XYZ on this down..."

Yep, AP is making you sound smarter on game day. Use this information wisely though. Many times inebriated fans do not appreciate "logic", "reason" or "facts". Heck, a lot of times stone cold sober fans don't appreciate facts.

First Down

14 rushing plays (3.14 average yards per rush), 9 passing plays (0 average yards per passing play)

Second Down

10 rushing plays (4.9 average yards per rush), 12 passing plays (11.17 average yards per passing play)

Third Down

3 rushing plays (3 average yards per rush), 13 passing plays (3.69 average yards per passing play)

Fourth Down

0 rushing plays (0 average yards per rush), 1 passing plays (0 average yards per passing play)

Playcalling

This was one thing I noticed during the game. Yes, the playcalling was really really boring, but even with what looked like they were slamming LJ into the backs of the O-linemen, usually they were getting around 3 yards per down by doing that. Usually our 3rd downs were very manageable, usually 3rd and 4 or 3rd and 3.

This may not look as sexy on the stat line when it says we’re only getting 3 yards per rush, but it does put us in good shape on 3rd down. Of course, if our O-line was in as good a shape as we wished it were, these same plays would probably be getting us 5 or 6 yards per rush which would be even better. All a part of having a half-rebuilt team.

It is good to see proof that the stereotypical perception of having a RRPP offense is indeed a myth. The Chiefs passed 39% of the time on 1st down and 54% of the time on 2nd down.

People really need to just pay attention to what happens during the game instead of allowing their preconceived notions of whats going to happen cloud what really happens.

Can't Wait for Tomorrow

I really can’t wait to see the difference tomorrow, between how the plays are called vs. a weaker team. I can understand conservative and working to build confidence for the young team against a potential dominating team. I think we will start out the same tomorrow, until we get some positive plays and “feel out” the weakness of the Raider defense.
Additionally, Huard is an executer, so I could see Chan opening it up to fit his capabilities differently than with Brodie.

Mixed feelings

When I first read this post I thought “are we giving away too many facts about the team?”
Then I looked at it from the standpoint that no team is going to depend on a blog to help them with game preparation.
Now, I think it is an amazing job by Chris to come up with this stuff and I want to get to the point with our offense where it doesn’t matter what teams find out, they still have to stop the CHIEFS!
Nice work and nice post.

Gameplanning on AP

It would be silly to assume there are Chiefs players who don’t read this site. In fact, I know of a couple that have read before…

No kidding

I’ll see if we can get this as one of the “featured posts” on the side. With updated stats, of course.

Nice job, Chris.

Yep we can do that

I can make this part of the stat day, which will hopefully make that post each week more interesting for people.

No First Down Passing Yards Is Sad

Considering that generally first down is the easiest to pass on considering that defenses are still generally in their base 3-4 or 4-3 defenses. When we do pass on first down, we gotta get at least 5 yards. That is a disturbing stat.

Agreed

Definitely the easiest down to pass on.
