Around SBN: Larry Johnson's Future in Kansas City Bar-right-arrows

Chiefs release one, grab another.

I think the Chiefs are starting to settle down on their five CBs. We all know they're going to keep Surtain, Flowers, and Carr. I believe at this point that Leggett might be their fourth, following both from his performance Thursday and from the buzz emanating from River Falls. The fifth seems, once again, a tossup between Brackenridge (last year's 3rd CB) and Patterson (special teams gunner from last year). I would personally give the edge to Patterson, but that's just me right now.

Barksdale is on the outside looking in (to put it gently), and Will Poole has just been let go.

To replace Poole, according to Teicher, the Chiefs signed the massive tackle Ken Shackleford to a two-year deal, to give the Chiefs a body while Albert is out. If that name sounds familiar to you, it's because the Chiefs released him earlier in the preseason.

So who's your five corners? Mine: Surtain, Flowers, Carr, Leggett, and Patterson.

I like your choices

however, I dont think Brackenridge nor Patterson played well enough Thursday night.

Barksdale played like crap on Thursday night, from what I saw

and there has been virtually no information on him coming from training camp. That can’t be a good sign.

Poole didn’t do too badly on Thursday, but he is old and wasn’t going to make the team anyways. Might as well get another big body in here.

As far as the CBs go, Brackenridge played horrible, while Patterson wasn’t much better. However, Patterson is a much better special teams player, and he should get the nod. And I really like how Leggett has played thus far.

So, I agree completely with your set of corners to make the team.

Spot on

I think when we eventually get rid of Surtain, the trio of Flowers, Carr and Leggett is going to be great for this team. That may be next year or so, but I like how that is going to look.

Can’t wait to see what happens Saturday night. I have to go to a bachelor party, so I’ll probably watch it on Sunday if I can manage to wake up/arise from my coma. NFL Network is broadcasting the replay at 11:00p on Sat. night… set your Tivos.

Shackelford

Looks like they are exploring more options for RT. McIntosh didn’t look good Thursday and can’t stay healthy. Richardson is still raw and needs time to develop.

Surtain?? Really...

Ok..let me start by saying did anyone watch the pre season game. Surtain was getting beat left and right. I mean we signed him coupe of years ago from the dolphins thinking he was going to help in the secondary. I’m still waiting, yeah I’ll give him credit for couple of INT’s here and there but other than that there is nothing there. Look we have a lot of young guys for a reason Ty law got let go and Surtain should of too. Out with the OLD and in with the YoungIm just tired of seeing our secondary get beat all the time.

Just a matter of time

By midseason at the latest Surtain should be on the outs. They want to give Flower some time to get his feet wet before they throw two rookie CBs out there at the same time. Surtain and his 15 yard cushions won’t be around much longer.

He's crafty

he got away with a hold or two to prevent getting totally smoked. I wonder if the refs were just letting them play that night. I thought we got away with a “running in to the kicker” after their first possession too.

Yep

I saw a Chiefs player mug the punter -

Surtain's Contract

I suspect that’s the only thing giving him a solid hold on the roster spot this year. That and the question marks around the other corners (just because they’re young and “unproven”). Surtain’s got four years remaining on his deal (counting this year) with $2 million per year in guaranteed money which would result in an $8 million or so cap hit if we cut him this preseason. His contract also calls for him to be paid $5.65 million this year, so it’s cheaper for the Chiefs to keep him this season then cut him next season when his salary jumps to $7 million (and his cap hit drops to $6 million, which would basically be like renegotiating his contract down to a cheaper one year deal).

Basically, we’re going to be stuck with Surtain this season no matter how bad he may or may not be because Carl Peterson gave him a long-term contract that makes it unfeasible to cut him. Sound familiar?

Supporting the lesser of two evils is still supporting something evil.

FLowers and Carr

I would love to see these 2 hold down the corners for the next 5 years or so. We need to keep Surtain around to help mentor these young corners.

Hopefully

they’ll play for more than 5 years…most NFL players are in their prime at 5 years.

Be Nice if

we could convert Kevin Robinson to the 5th corner if he is going to be the return man. I think there is a better battle for the 5th reciever spot, than corner. Hate to see him take it from Maurice Price or Sippio…...Just a thought.

by letral on Aug 11, 2008 3:52 PM CDT   0 recs

Or

Who ever takes the return job for that matter. i.e. Savage….Would rather have him on the roster than Patterson…..Again, just speculation.

by letral on Aug 11, 2008 3:54 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Supposedly, Surtain has had a fabulous camp.

So, while old and likely over-the-hill, as long as he plays halfway decent (just like last year) and doesn’t block Carr from starting if/when he’s ready (and with Herm that isn’t likely) then I really have no big issue with him staying on the team.

It would be nice to go all-out with the youth, but he is essentially the only veteran in the entire defensive backfield (unless you include Jon McGraw as a vet), and he just might be a pretty nice guy to have around.

But I’m just looking for positives…
