BJ Samms = Eddie Drummond Jr.
All I can say is I really hope Kevin Robinson gets better quick.
I was flying high after that opening drive last night, but the biggest flash of anger I got was watching BJ Samms do his best Eddie Drummond impersonation.
Chicago punted five times and BJ Samms returned exactly ZERO. He fair caught once with no Chicago special teams player within 15 yards of him and let another returnable ball roll inside the five yard line without even chipping a Bears player coming in to down it.
He makes no other contributions to the team but returning punts. He's not a WR, he's not a CB, he's not even doing kickoff returns. His only purpose for being on this team is to return punts. If all he's going to do is fake a catch and let the ball bounce behind him instead of catching it and trying to return it, we can put Tank Tyler in there to do that.
Preseason games don't really mean anything. But they are an opportunity for players to show their coaches they have skills the team needs. It doesn't matter if you have 3 defenders right in your face when the punt is coming down, you catch it and try to make something out of it. That's how you prove you have something to contribute. You aren't showing the coaches anything by not doing anything.
At this point, if Kevin Robinson comes in and at minimum actually makes an effort to catch the ball and even TRY to return it, he will beat out Samms.

his fair catch with nobody around him was upsetting, he needs to have the atitiude to run the ball everytime in preseason, even if its 9 yards deep in the endzone

sams
I agree with most of what you said,BUT 9 yards deep in the end zone. That is unless he’s the second coming of hall.

Hestor
When you have people like Hestor who consider a punt or kick off as a free touchdown, you have to do something other than stand around.

Hah!
I’d pay to see Tank return a punt. That would be hilarious! I could see him getting a few yards by trucking all the little corners and receivers coming down to get him.

Completely Agree
Sams’ career has been remarkably similar to Drummond’s (although Drummond’s best years were significantly better than Sams’). They’re also about the same age (Sams is six months younger), and Sams has had significantly more serious injuries, so I’ve got no clue why we’re even considering Sams for a roster spot…especially if it means we cut a younger CB for the guy.

Yea, I don't mind bringing him to camp.
It was probably a waste to use it on him as opposed to a camp arm or a camp WR, but I still think it was worth the slight chance that he shows anything of worth in training camp for our return game. I best if Robinson would have been healthy, he wouldn’t have made it to training camp, but without Robinson we had a bunch of mostly unproven returners and Herm probably wanted at least one guy in there who had done it before.
But if he makes the 53-man roster, oh boy.

Camp Is For Unproven Guys
I’d rather that Sams wasn’t taking away reps from young players who might need return time to make the squad.

Sams is unproven
He’s coming back from a serious injury and theres big questions about whether he can be the same guy he was. What sucks is he refused to show us against the Bears.

Sams Is Not Unproven
Sams proved during his best years that he wasn’t as good as Eddie Drummond during Drummond’s best years.
The only thing that hasn’t been proven is how far back he’s been able to come from a broken leg that made him miss a lot of football the last two years. Generally speed players suffering serious leg injuries don’t get faster or better, they get slower and worse. And considering that he doesn’t play any other position, and considering that a good returner versus an average one isn’t going to make much difference for us this year, I’d rather the Chiefs gave the job to a young guy who might be able to do more than fair catch in the preseason and who could develop into a good KR/PR (while possibly playing another position).

I totally agree with you
What I meant was that he has not proven that he has come back from his injury and can be as good as he was before. The way he performed against Chicago, I don’t think he deserves it.

Also
He’s the same age as Drummond…so you can reasonably expect, given the leg and missed time, that he’ll be worse than Drummond was if he was never better than Drummond before.
