The New Chiefs
There were many good things that were overlooked from our first preseason games; in addition, there were a number of mistakes that have not gotten any attention from the media and my fellow AP readers. I'd like to bring attention to some of these items and hopefully they can be addressed and discussed. (sorry for making a cliche list)
1. Adrian Jones - struggled throughout the first quarter and missed a number of blocks. One that comes to mind was a counter left in which he was pulling to the left and did not make contact with anybody. How long must it take to find a good replacement to Will Shields. We have been spoiled by Will's Greatness and I think we missed a big opportunity at Alan Faneca. However, I do believe that we should move Damion McIntosh inside simply because I was impressed by the play of Barry Richardson. He looked strong against a second and third string defensive line. Granted it was second and third string.
2. Jarrad Page - missed that one tackle by trying to lay a hit on Desmond Clark a big TE without wrapping up. This is his third year and he should understand that basics by now. I don't want to say that we need a replacement but he was a seventh round pick...
3. Jackie Battle - I just didn't see anything out of him. If he's second on depth I believe he should have played somewhat better then he did. I just didn't see any explosion out of the gate like guys of his stature require. I hope he can show me this the next game.
4. Brad Cottam - Although he made a number of catches he did miss some blocks.
5. Brian Johnston - Didn't seem to live up to my expectations. He had such a good report coming out of OTA's and Training Camp but didn't seem to put any pressure on the QB at all.
Despite these negatives we had some good looks at our new team. I was impressed by our WR's and RB's. It's a shame that Dantrell Savage won't make the team along with Bobby Sippio.
Did anybody hear anything about Pat Thomas? That must mean that he was doing his job well. I mean after all he is stuck between two of the better OLB's in the game.
My initial Grade of the 2008 Chiefs is a C+. We'll see how next saturday goes. COME BACK GLENN AND BRANDEN!!!

I think
Sippio and Savage both make the team..Sippio could move up the depth chart to at least 4th and I think Savage showed alot of potential as well…I think either Batttle or Smith gets cut at RB….
I absolutely agree
with your assessment of Adrian Jones. He looked absolutely horrible. For that matter, McIntosh didn’t look all that great at RT, either. I still think that Richardson should start at RT and we should have held onto his teammate from Clemson (can’t remember the name) to look at at RG.
Also, Battle showed nothing to prove that he’s worthy of that second roster spot. From what I saw last night, Battle should be gone and we should keep Savage.
I don’t agree about Page and Cottam, though. Page is going to be a good FS in this league for quite awhile – one missed tackle is nothing much to worry about, and that was the only mistake of his that I could see. Of course, just to be sure, I want to see him make the tackle on the next big TE that comes his way. As for Cottam, I have to admit I didn’t see the missed blocks you talked about. He looked great as a receiver, though. Wish I’d recorded the game; I could go back to look at the film, then.
Finally, with Johnston, the D-line as a unit didn’t seem to generate a whole lot of pressure. I’d expect that to improve when Dorsey gets back, and as the preseason moves on and units get more playing time together.
+1
Richardson’s teammate was Chris McDuffie (6’4” 328 lbs.) – I have no idea why he got cut, had many good days, then one or two bad days and now he’s gone, I would have liked to have seem him and Richardson playing the second half for certain…
Battle had a couple of 5yd runs last night, then was stacked at the line a few times too – when the blocks were there he hit the hole with a pop, but I agree, we need to see more of both him and Savage and make an informed decision instead of just writing Savage off as being too small…
I don’t know what was up with the DLine, but NO ONE on the line had a good evening…
Chris McDuffie
and we should have held onto his teammate from Clemson (can’t remember the name) to look at at RG.
McDuffie is who you’re thinking of. I thought it was a mistake to dump him too. He seemed to have more promise than Jones.
Supporting the lesser of two evils is still supporting something evil.
Run D
The only thing that really bothers me about last night is that we allowed 175 yds rushing. That’s not good at all. What was the problem? Sure, starting Dorsey and Edwards will help correct some issues, but stopping the run is something we’ve known needed improvement. I’m just interested in hearing someone talk about why we didn’t do a better job in that respect.
