Herm Edwards Q&A

Seems to be a pretty ho-hum day in River Falls today.  The physical part of practice was toned down as Herm and co. tried to get the team mentally ready to play tomorrow night.

According to Bob Gretz, six players won't make the trip to Chicago tomorrow night: LB Donnie Edwards, DT Glenn Dorsey, LT Branden Albert, RB Kolby Smith, DE Trevor Johnson and WR Kevin Robinson.

Herm on what he's looking for tomorrow on both sides of the ball:

“Offensively, our ability to move the ball and put some points on the board. And, we’re playing against a good defense and it’s going to be a good test. Our ability to not turn the ball over and to take the ball away. Our coverage teams to cover; I think that’s important. It’ll take the pre-season to determine who will be our return guy. We’re looking at some of our young offensive linemen and how they play.

“Defensively, improving on the run and trying to take the ball away. Those type of things. That and tackling. How are we going to tackle because we haven’t tackled somebody since the last game of the season, so it’s been a long time since last tackle? Those things are the key.”

Also, tomorrow will be the first time the Chiefs have used the new defensive communication device in their helmets (thanks, Spygate!).  Derrick Johnson and Pat Thomas will have the devices in their helmet.  However, just one defensive player on the field can have it at a time.

Confused

If Pat Thomas is running with the first team LB’s, what is happening with this?

That's what I thought too

It’s from Gretz. I can’t figure out the reasoning, I imagine they’ll be on the field at the same time. Or can one player turn theirs off (I doubt it)?

that

or wear somebody else’s helmet?

Also

One of them has to be on the field for every defensive play, or in other words, one or both will have to play the whole game????? Can they give it to someone else?

Good questions

Maybe those two players are two of their top choices to wear it during the season and they want to get feedback from both of them after the game. Plus time getting used to it. So maybe the coaches know they won’t have a player with it during much of the second half, but the previous points had priority.

So

They’ll just send in the plays during the second half with hand signals? Also if you read Gretz entire quote on his site he says, “The Chiefs will use the new defensive player communication system, with Pat Thomas and Derrick Johnson being hooked up to hear the defenses from the sideline.” Is that the play coming in from the sideline, or they are on the sideline too? This is very confusing…..Maybe since it’s the first time, they are gonna do both hand signals AND the voice communication system to make sure everyone is on the same page…..

Grossman or Orton

Will be leading the offense when we are calling in the defensive signals tomorrow night.
We can just yell from the sidelines and talk fast.

=)

That'll Give Us Hope

I think that Chicago will be a prime competitor with us in the Rey Maualuga sweepstakes this season. Their QB situation is beyond awful and that defense of theirs is getting real old real fast.

Supporting the lesser of two evils is still supporting something evil.

I assume they won't

only use the communicators, and that DJ will be the one with the primary responsibility of having it in his helmet.

have you seen my baseball?
