Training Camp Tuesday PM Update
Temperature: 85
Humidity: 29 (sounds nice right about now)
Attendance: 89
In typical Herm fashion, the head coach is pumping up Dantrell Savage. He then goes on to talk about the rest of the depth at running back:
“It’ll be fun to watch these guys play, especially the running backs. We know what Larry’s capable of doing but for the rest of these guys…. It’s probably the best depth we’ve had at that position since I’ve been here. Now, what we’ve got to do is stay on the field offensively so these guys can play. That’s the whole key now: make first downs so we can get a bunch of plays so we can watch these guys play.”
Damon Huard is so 2007:
Listed on the unofficial depth chart as the third-string quarterback, Damon Huard worked with the third offense during practice. Huard threw a great pass to wide receiver Sergiori Joachim 50 yards down the field but Joachim was unable to get two feet in bounds to record the catch.
Sounds like a pretty miserable camp for Huard so far. From what I've read, Thigpen is starting to look like a real deal. Well, as real as back-up quarterbacks can get. Despite the hype he is getting in camp, I think it would be a disaster if he were forced to play for an extended period of time.

Thigpen
I hear a lot of mixed reports on Thigpen.
A lot of what I’m hearing is that he is struggling quite a bit, but does make some big plays once in a while, but when he does make a big play, its kind of a “street ball” thing where he’s not really doing smart, disciplined things.
I guess it just depends on if you like him or not. If you listen to the KC Star, he’s the guy in waiting if Croyle fails. If you listen to WPI, the Chiefs need to go out and find another QB because neither of the backups are any good.
Everyone agrees Huard stinks. :)
Not sold on Pigpen
I hear mixed reviews as well. Supposedly Gailey’s offensive scheme is benefiting him, as there are more roll-outs that get him in the open. He is rumored to have some decent mobility as well.
I sure hope Crizzle turns it on this year because I don’t want to see either of these backups out there in a game situation. At least Huard has been there and done that… he may do better if he’s not under constant pressure. Of course that’s assuming we’ve dried out that wet paper bag that was our O-line last year.
