waiver pickups

What players on waivers do you think the Chiefs should consider signing?  Who would the Chiefs cut to make room for these players?  I would be surprised if the Chiefs turned their roster over by more than 2 to 4 players.  Remember, the players on waivers are guys that teams did not think were very good!

Two candidates I found in a cursory search are Roydell Williams (WR, Titans) and Calvin Lowry (WR, Titans.)

Williams is a fourth-year player (a starter last year) who is coming back from an ankle injury.  The Titans cut him because it is not clear whether he can contribute a ton this year (there was talk of putting him on IR) and because his Titans contract was going to expire after this year.  The Chiefs could sign him to a multi-year deal and see how he recovers.  I am not saying that he is the second coming of Bowe, but he has contributed in this league and did attend college in Lousiana!

Lowry is a third-year player who was a part-time starter (both at free and strong safety, 11 games total) last year and seemingly a pretty good special teams player his first year.  He is not that big (5'11 200lbs), but he is fast (4.49) and defended 10 passes last year (Jarrad Page only defended 6 in 16 starts and Bernard Pollard defended 7 in 15 starts.)

Let us know what you think about waiver pickups!

Waiver wire guys

“Remember, the players on waivers are guys that teams did not think were very good!”

That’s not necessarily always the case. Sometimes it just means that this player just was not as good as the other guys at his position they already had.

On a team that has been stripped down as much as the Chiefs have, that guy could still be a considerable upgrade in talent from what we currently have (which is why we have so many rookies playing and getting significant playing time, its not that all these guys are superstars, just that they’re better than anyone else we have on the team right now, which is also why we will not have a very good record this year).

Roydell Williams

Might be worth a pickup if he wasn’t injured. But if the injuries are serious enough that the Titans were talking IR then probably not.

Supporting the lesser of two evils is still supporting something evil.

Kansas City Claims G Brian De La Puente and LB Erik Walden on Waivers
Aug 31, 2008, 1:29:03 PM

Kansas City Chiefs President Carl Peterson announced on Sunday that the club claimed two players on waivers. The Chiefs claimed G Brian De La Puente on waivers from San Francisco and LB Erik Walden from Dallas. Per the NFL’s Collective Bargaining Agreement, those players will play under terms of their contracts with their previous clubs.

De La Puente (6-3, 306) (pronounced DAY-la-PWEN-tay) originally entered the NFL as a rookie free agent with San Francisco in 2008. He played in 26 games (16 starts) during his four-year collegiate career at California. He started all 13 games as a senior, earning honorable mention Pac 10 honors. The Los Angeles, California native earned first-team All-South Coast League honors as a senior at San Clemente High School in San Clemente, California.

Walden (6-2, 250) entered the NFL as a sixth-round pick (167th overall) of Dallas in 2008. A collegiate defensive end, Walden was a four-year letterwinner at Middle Tennessee State. He played in 44 games (34 starts), recording 152 tackles (108 solo), 40.0 tackles for loss, 22.5 sacks (-136.0 yards), four passes defensed, five forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and one interception. Walden saw action in 10 contests (nine starts) as a senior, recording 46 tackles (35 solo), 9.0 stops for loss and 2.0 sacks to earn first-team all-conference honors. He was named first-team all-state at Dublin High School in Dublin, Georgia.

I think..

These guys fall under the worth-A-look catagory. Like Barksdale a year ago, but hey you never know Ryan Lilja was the same for the Colts and he’s a starter now.
