Novak wins Chiefs kicking battle

"Nick Novak will be the Chiefs kicker when they open the regular season Sept. 7 at New England."

Novak wins Chiefs kicking battle

So, that's it for Barth. If he's been told you have to figure more cuts will be announced soon.

How much must it suck to put in so much time and come up short? I feel real bad for these guys. Some of them will have their NFL dreams squashed forever in the next 24 or so hours.

Bye Bye Barth

I’m going to go on record and say that this was a stupid decision and that Mike Priefer is the most incompetent special teams coordinator in the NFL.

Fire Priefer.

I Suppose This Also Means

That we’ll be enjoying the presence of B.J. Sams on our roster this year as well.

Give the Chiefs a choice on special teams, they always seem to pick the worst possible option. What I wouldn’t give to have “Hard Knocks” covering the Chiefs this year so we can hear the rationale behind their decisions.

AGREED

Barth’s kickoffs looked better than Novaks I thought, and not to mention the perfect 15 for 15 in the kick off with Feely, His only FG miss of the preseason hitting the upright……ect ect ect……This is a bad decision….There is a reason Novak has been cut by several other teams….Good luck Connor…Hopefully some other team will appreciate the talent we just threw away…. GRRRRR

QBs and Kickers

Two positions for which the Chiefs cannot evaluate prospects.

Barth >> Novak.

Bad decision.

by rockchalk on Aug 29, 2008 1:41 PM CDT   0 recs

65%

Just remember that number during the season if our field goal kicker is a problem and Carl and Herm tell us to be patient…they opted to retain a guy who’s hit 65% for his career of 16 games (which is plenty of time to tell whether he’s capable of playing).

Disagreed

While in the little time I have read UCrawford I have realised that he is very informed on the chiefs . While I agree on the bad decisions on special teams I don’t agree on the QBs I don’t care who you are even Dawson couldn t tell now ( lack of games played ) if Brodie is going to be a great QB If you recall Dawson was traded & sit on the bench for what 3yrs before being cut signed by the Texans (Chiefs ) . The rest of the story is Hall Of Fame Year after year teams draft QBs in the fist round only to see them fail more times than not. At the end of this year we well know if Brodie is or wont be a NFL QB . To make a statement on him now is true fol lie. I have the most respect for UCrawford & wont say his is wrong or right its just premature on his or anyone part to say they know the outcome on him. Favre was traded by the Falcons Brady a 6rd pick it just shows that picking a QB isn’t a exact science.

QBs And Carl

I’m going to pass on discussing Croyle for now, mainly because I’ve probably beaten this topic to death, my feelings are well known and the regular season is almost upon us so we’ll know for sure in a few weeks so there’s no point in rehashing the hypotheticals.

I’ll say this regarding the larger point of Carl Peterson and QBs, though…the man’s been in charge for 19 years and in all that time he has not found one quarterback in the draft who has proven himself capable of being an NFL starter. Not one. With this many opportunities, he should have stumbled on one by accident. And yet here we are, two decades into his tenure, still wondering if his latest QB of the future is going to be capable of doing anything except taking up space. After 19 years and four or five QBs of the future (Stenstrom, Elkins, Blundin, and Matthews just off the top of my head) I think it’s completely fair to say that Carl Peterson is a rotten judge of QB talent even if Croyle doesn’t turn out to be one of the worst QBs in the NFL this year.

This doesn't make sense

Barth’s field goal in the preseason hit the upright, Novak’s was wide, wide, wide right. If based on yesterday, Barth had better kickoffs. Barth made one more field goal than Novak in the competition this week with Feely. Novak had his chance for a while and only connected 65, while Barth is coming off of 90 in college.

WHY!!?!?!?!?!??!?!??!!?

by Vince D on Aug 29, 2008 1:57 PM CDT   0 recs

Because The King Is A Coward

It’s about being risk-averse. If Carl goes with a rookie and the rookie screws up and does terribly then he’s got nobody to blame because he went with a rookie and rookies are unpredictable. So he’ll take the blame for making a bad choice. If he goes with the vet, though, he can point the finger at Novak and say that Novak was a veteran who should have known what was expected of him, so it’s Novak’s fault for letting the team down (while trying to ignore the fact that all Novak’s experience has shown is that he’s not very good at hitting field goals). Settling for mediocrity rather than risking failure is just what Carl Peterson does. And it’s why they should fire him and the special teams coach if Novak is terrible this year.

agreed

While your point on Carl is probable right . You cant fault him from an owners view on ticket sales- community work – College tailgating – wins loses- . Carl has had to many hats to wear for the Chiefs . H is failure is in the area of Gm in charge of players that is what Marty ( seem to me ) fought over . Carl thinks he is a good judge on players & I think Iam good looking but at last we are not.

Carl's Done A Lot Of Good Things For The Community

That I certainly won’t argue with. His focus on charity work has been admirable, he’s been an excellent salesman for the team, and I’m sure he’s never given less than his full effort to try and help us win…and I think most fans are greatful for his work on those fronts. Unfortunately, the most important job on which he needs to be judged is as general manager, as a GM he leaves a lot to be desired, he often seems to be in a state of denial about this and it hurts the team. This is why I think he probably should have been asked to step down some time ago…not because he doesn’t care or because he’s a bad guy (actually, I doubt he is a bad guy) but because he’s simply not the one who can get the team over the hump.

Well said UC. Hopefully we “get over the hump” this season or next. If not, I hope Clark Hunt makes an unbiased appraisal of who the next GM should be =)

Sure

Always a chance. You never know with kickers. Maybe if Novak completely blows it we’ll still have a shot at Barth. But I imagine he’s going to attract some interest.

This is such a TERRIBLE decision what the hell..

it doesnt even make any since at all

ugh.

by focs on Aug 29, 2008 3:46 PM CDT   0 recs

Barth

Hmm While that is a possibility it seems there is always a misplaced (no pun intended ) kicker out there looking for a job. There is always Feely that just a few days ago in the star was the answer to all our kicking problems . Time well tell if the Chiefs where right but base on the last 3yrs its not looking to good.

by oldchieffan on Aug 29, 2008 3:52 PM CDT   0 recs

Oh Well

Like I’ve said before, kickers are about the most replaceable thing on the roster and it’s not like it’ll be impossible to find a competent one if Novak sucks and we can’t get Barth back. John Carney was okay for us last year and I doubt he’s got a job yet. Maybe Morten Andersen wants to have another go with the Chiefs.

I like the Morten comment UC

Don't Laugh Too Hard :)

He was kicking for Atlanta last season so he may very well be open to another job opportunity.

Wont that effect his retirement checks he would have to pay it back

by oldchieffan on Aug 29, 2008 4:23 PM CDT   0 recs

And I'm not sure

that they’d let him use his walker to get out on the field

by PVChiefsfan on Aug 29, 2008 4:38 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

That would be cheating & they would have to review it While it would probably take 10 min to review

by oldchieffan on Aug 29, 2008 4:47 PM CDT   0 recs

Y'know...

after reading nicknovak.net, I kinda like the guy!

by Vince D on Aug 29, 2008 6:04 PM CDT   0 recs

I'd Like Him A Lot More

If his career field goal percentage wasn’t 65% (50% the last year he played).

It was a fair and good fight

I was pulling for Barth all along, but now that the decision is made I’m going to put all my support behind him. I know he won’t be perfect, but I’ve never seen a perfect player or person yet. I believe he has the desire and capability of being an 80% + kicker. Now it is on him to perform.

Until he proves he can’t, he is a Chief and just one of the 53 that have to be a team to win. I wish Novak the best, and Barth a great career somewhere else as long as he never contributes to beating us, or is on another AFC West team.

I hope we can all get behind all the players we keep whether they were our “guy” or not. This is the time to look at “OUR” team and cheer them on. GO CHIEFS!
