Chiefs Defeat Rams in a Boring Governor's Cup

Gamecenter on NFL.com is here.

With a final score of 21 to 17, the Kansas City Chiefs concluded their up and down 2008 preseason.

As with every NFL team, there are still many unanswered questions about the young players on this team. And since young players make up about 85% of this team, well, you get the idea.

A full recap will come tomorrow morning, along with a special update about a former Chief. This is your post game thread.

Kolby Looked Good

Battle too. I think Dantrell Savage is going to have a really tough time making the squad now.

Good TD catch by Sippio. Wonder if he might make the cut over Darling, who did nothing this preseason.

I Consider Charles A Given

Very rare that a team gives up on their 3rd round pick the year they draft him unless the guy shows up drunk to practice or eats all of his training meals at McDonald’s.

This is the problem with Sippio...

…just as he has a clear path for the door, he pulls a play like that out of the ether.

I also hope it’s not enough to make the cut, but we’ll see.

wow hope the last 2 games of right around 200 yards total offense isnt a trend we will continue to follow.

by ChiefinSaintsland on Aug 28, 2008 10:30 PM CDT reply actions

Yeah

because we are probably going to play all three quarterbacks, all 30 receivers and all 20 runningbacks.

Darling

Darling did nothing at all, if he makes the 53 its a testament tp how bad our receiving corps are.

by ChiefinSaintsland on Aug 28, 2008 10:32 PM CDT reply actions

I'm Beginning To See

Why Baltimore gave up on him. It’s not like their receiving corps is spectacular or anything.

Is he just not abel to get open?

I mean Jabari freakin’ Arthur caught a few passes in the preseason…what the hell is up with Darling?

by PVChiefsfan on Aug 29, 2008 7:34 AM CDT up reply actions

Baltimore didn't give up on him...

He was saddled behind a free agent probowler and a first round pick, thus assuring he’d be nothing more than a slot. And a slot reciever in Baltimore will get you less targets than being the fifth guy in St Louis (do you wanna be the slot in an offense lead by Kyle Boller?). He wanted a chance to compete for a starting job and KC was the best place, so he looked here when free agency came for him.

Also, his downfield blocking is some of the best I’ve ever seen from a reciever (D-Bowe, take notes please). He might not have caught the ball, but it was only throw at him a couple times, and those were off target or miscommunications. He was also one of the most heavily scouted prospects coming out of high school and has the physical tools for the position.

I don't suppose there is any way

We can trade Larry for 2nd and 3rd round draft picks next year, is there?

I know we lost all our games when he was gone last year.
I know some announcers think he’s half human, half horse.
I know he was a monster back for us for a couple of years.
Call me ungrateful.

I also know the yards that the other four RBs gained in preseason were against scrubs.

Maybe I just want to see how young and inexperienced we can go and still be competitive. Kind of a sick compulsion. But can you really imagine the announcers saying things like this when describing LJ this season: “He eludes the first tackler in the backfield.” “He cuts it to the outside where he picks up 15.” “His just blew by the defensive end.” “His quickness to the hole really made that play.” “He hit the hole and cut back against the grain for a big gainer.”

I can imagine those comments being made about some of our other RBs, but not LJ. “He lowered his shoulder.” Yeah. “He showed patience waiting for the hole to open up.” Of course. “He was trapped in the backfield.” Afraid so.

Announcing a trade like that on Saturday would drive most of Chiefs nation crazy. Carl could be lynched, I suppose. “How can you get rid of this teams’ best defensive and offensive players in the same year?!?!” would be the cry. And the existing contract probably makes it impossible, anyway.

Just sayin’ that I would silently cheer the move.

We Can't Really Trade Him Yet

He’s still got that monster contract and the results of cutting or trading him now would be catastrophic to our salary cap, especially since the first three years of salary are guaranteed.

8/21/2007: Signed a six-year, $45.05 million contract. The deal included a $12.5 million signing bonus and contains $19 million in total guarantees. The first three years’ base salaries are guaranteed. 2008: $2.5 million (+ $100,000 workout bonus + $62,500 per-game roster bonuses), 2009: $4.55 million (+ $100,000 workout bonus + $62,500 per-game roster bonuses), 2010: $5 million (+ $1 million roster bonus due 3/1 + $100,000 workout bonus + $62,500 per-game roster bonuses), 2011: $5.3 million (+ $1 million roster bonus due 3/1 + $100,000 workout bonus + $62,500 per-game roster bonuses), 2012: $5.9 million (+ $1 million roster bonus due 3/1 + $100,000 workout bonus + $62,500 per-game roster bonuses), 2013: Free Agent. Cap charges: $6.156 million (2008), $8.206 million (2009), $9.183 million (2010), $9.483 million (2011), $10.083 million (2012).

Thanks, UCrawford

We can count on you for the contract low-down. Plus, LJ is Carl’s guy. LJ is probably the one guy that everyone knows was not a coach’s choice, but Carl’s choice. So I’ll just hope for the chip to reappear on the shoulder, or whatever it will take to get him back to running like a man possessed.

Special Teams

What Could it be can it be that the Chiefs & Priefer are really reading these blogs . Its like we start calling for his head & the special teams start acting like their name implies .One game doesn’t make a season but tonight they were tackling & hustling like their roster spot mite be in jeopardy . Well done Chiefs ! Got to give them some love ( just like the wife ) Of coarse only when they deserve it.

by oldchieffan on Aug 28, 2008 11:53 PM CDT reply actions

Same subject

Coarse the Chiefs coaches might be as smart as us . Hmm nah I don’t think that’s the case.

by oldchieffan on Aug 29, 2008 12:05 AM CDT reply actions

A couple of things

1. Why can’t Croyle throw the fade like Huard can? If he’s supposed to be “mentoring” Brodie then Brodie should make the throw to Bowe in the 1st quarter. Huard came in and laid a perfect pass to Dwayne Sippio. I mean Bobby….they looked an awful lot alike.

2. Anyone take notice of big Brandon Carr. Not sure of his measureables at this second but he was stride for stride with most of the receivers (albeit second string) and he just looks like an NFL corner.

3. I really really like TJ Jackson. If the rotation is Dorsey, Tyler, Edwards, Boone and Jackson I am a happy man. He won a roster spot to me last night. Would we keep 5 tackles?

by dkugler838 on Aug 29, 2008 7:53 AM CDT reply actions

Good points all

The fade takes faith. I hope that Croyle hasn’t been so indoctrinated with not making a mistake the past year that he no longer trusts himself to put a passes where they need to be. Give Bowe, in particular, a chance. And yes, Carr and TJ impressed.

by sunny D on Aug 29, 2008 10:30 AM CDT up reply actions

Well, you stole my thunder

I just finished watching the game and was going to come in here and post almost the exact same thing you did… point for point.

1. Exactly! WTF is up with Brodie and his fade routes? It’s like he has no touch, or doesn’t know how to put touch on the ball. The only thing he knows is throwing it as hard as he can on a straight line. When he tries to put some finesse on it, he loses all accuracy.

2. Yes yes and yes! I was leery of Carr coming in to preseason, I thought he might be getting overhyped. But the more I’ve seen him play the more confident I am that he will eventually replace Surtain, even if it’s next season. But I won’t worry now if Surtain gets hurt this season, Carr looks to be ready for the challenge. Every time it was thrown his way, he not only had is WR covered, but he had the wits to turn his head and find the ball and try to make a play on it. He almost had another pick in the first quarter – but he still made a great play.

3. I hope TJ makes it in to the final rotation, I don’t know if he will, 5 tackles is probably too many to keep… so I at least hope we can sneak him on the practice squad. He had a sack last week in Miami, and it seemed like he was in the backfield an awful lot in this game as well. He’s a big boy and gets good penetration… I like what I saw from him.

additional points
4. I think I really like Pat Thomas – I haven’t been able to pay much attention to him in pass coverage, but he attacks the ball well. I don’t think we’re giving up anything by subbing him in for Harris.

5. Johnston looked better – he was flying around and finally got himself a sack. He may eventually develop in to something good.

6. Cox rocks

7. We play the bootleg extremely well. It seemed like we always had a DE hold contain on boots and in most situations it led to a broken play. I think they got one dump pass off to a TE/FB, but other than that we played it well. Look out Denver!!

-some not so good points-

8. Our poor team doctor got a compound fracture when he got rolled up on… that had to hurt. I could see him cursing when he rolled over afterward. I heard bone was coming out of the skin. I guess if we had to suffer a serious injury, it is better him than one of our starters.

9. It’s probably because we were leading by a good margin and the weather was poor, but did anyone notice the return to r2p2 (run, run, pass, punt) once we were up 21-3? It seemed like we were doing a lot of that. I hope it’s not indicative of what we will do in the regular season if we hold a lead… especially coming out of the 1st quarter. There’s a lot of time left to blow it in that situation.

10. Our second team run-D was pretty sad. That Ball kid tore us up for some huge gains. That was disappointing. Not only that, but it seemed like they bit a lot on fakes and screens. But hey, that’s why they’re 2nd team I guess.

11. When did we start sucking at running screens? I haven’t seen us run a screen all preseason that went more than 5 yards. We used to dominate with them (yeah yeah, great O-line back then). Just an observation.

by Ochophosphate on Aug 29, 2008 12:43 PM CDT up reply actions

11.

Screens are hard for o-linemen, and we have a lot of new guys and guys in new positions…most of our screens have been blown up because a LB was able to avoid a block by a big fatty.

by PVChiefsfan on Aug 29, 2008 2:51 PM CDT up reply actions

2.

not just second-stringers…he was stride for stride with the Rams’ first round pick this year on several plays.

and 3. I have to believe Edwards would be the odd man out, it they think Jackson is about equal to Edwards, as Jackson has more upside.
