Pro Bowl defensive end Shawne Merriman has informed the team that he will play this season despite having two torn knee ligaments, Merriman told FOXSports.com.
Merriman has a torn PCL and LCL in his left knee, but has postponed the surgery necessary to deal with those issues. He sought the opinion of several noted specialists in the last week. While all of them recommended surgery, the decision was ultimately left to the player.

So, when he’s caught using the ol’ ‘Vitamin S’ this time around, he can just say his trainers told him it would help his bad knee … ?

wow
It’s like he kept shopping for opinions until hoping to find a doctor that didn’t say “get the season ending surgery”. I’m glad the doctors at least told him what was best for him… he just chose not to listen.
Some people are like that, they only want to hear what they want to hear.
As a human being I hope it doesn’t ruin his career. As a selfish Chiefs fan I hope it comes back to bite him in the ass.
I guess the Chargers organization doesn’t have that much to lose. He’s in the last year of his contract so if he effs up and goes down for good they won’t be on the hook. If he plays through the season and is effective, they get that bonus too.
IMO – he’s batshit crazy.

What A Dumbass
Seriously…what in the hell is wrong with that guy. Why even waste the plane fare talking to the doctors if he had no intention of listening to them?
Too bad for Merriman, could have been a great career.

Works Out Well For The Chargers, Though
If he’d had surgery they’d lose him for this season, possibly have him at less than full-strength for next season (and maybe permanently), then they’d be stuck with the choice of either re-signing him and hoping he fully recovers or letting him leave after 2009 and praying that he doesn’t come back to haunt them. Now they can just let him screw up his career on his own and they can wash their hands of him.
Sad, and a little sick, but hey…it’s not like they told Merriman to ignore all the doctors like a moron.

It could work for Merriman as well
If he plays well this season, gets the surgery, and has another good year on the repaired knee then he’s looking at a massive payday.
I certainly don’t agree with it, but if he can somehow stay healthy then it might work out.

Too Many Ifs
All it takes is one block that an average player can take and he’s done. I agree with Ocho’s assessment, he’s batshit crazy…or just another dumbass kid who thinks he’s invulnerable.

Since when did Merriman move to DE?
The guy is one of the biggest names in the NFL…you’d think Fox Sports could get his position correct.

He's basically a glorified DE
playing outside OLB in a 3-4… he’s basically a rush LB. You don’t see him drop in to coverage much… because all he’s good at is rushing the passer and playing the run.

Heh
because all he’s good at is rushing the passer and playing the run.
You make that sound like the guy sucks :)

Nah, he doesn't suck
at playing the run/rushing the passer. He’s just not an all-around good LB. He’s great in his little niche.
Also, echoing the comments of Ocho earlier, as a decent person, I hope Merriman doesn’t ruin his life or career. As a Chiefs fan, I hope this carries at least some repercussion for him.

As a Priest Holmes fan, I hope whomever it is that puts the hit on Merriman that ends his career brags about it after.

He certainly doesn't suck
but like Seth C said, he’s not an all-around good LB like, say, Patrick Willis. Someone who can hurt you in coverage as well as in pass rush. A jack of all trades if you will. Merriman is a jack of one trade – pass rushing.

Does he ever line up with his hand on the ground?
If not, he’s a LB.

rarely if ever
that’s why he’s a glorified DE. If he played in a 4-3, or had been drafted to a team that plays 4-3, I bet he would be moved to DE and he would play with his hand on the ground. I don’t think he would be as effective in a 4-3 scheme though, as DE or LB.

I dont like it from this standpoint
When he plays well he will be reffered to as a “hero” for suffering through the pain.
When he plays bad it will be “well he is playing with a bum leg you know”.

No the comment will be
How is he hiding the roids with all the tests he has to take if he makes it through the season.

Reminds me....
This move by Merriman reminds me of “Boobie” from Friday Night Lights (the movie). “I can play, coach!” By not fixing his “season ending injury”, he’s going to end up with a “career ending injury.” Stupid. Just stupid.
