Jay Feely's Agent "Shocked" About His Quick Release

I'd probably be a little pissed off too.

"We’re shocked, baffled, disappointed," said his agent, Glenn Schwartzman. "It was not our understanding that they were just going to give the job to Jay. We in no way thought that. We knew he would have to win the job.

"While no one promised him the job, we were under the impression he would be given a better opportunity to win it. If they’re going to base it off two days of kicking, they probably shouldn’t have signed him. It makes no sense to make a decision about Jay without letting him kick in the preseason game."

Feely has to feel a bit used after this. He was essentially brought in to jazz up our current kickers, although I feel like if Feely had out kicked either Barth or Novak over the last two days that it would have been one of them getting the boot.

This is the business of the NFL. I'm glad to see the coaching staff isn't keeping any player around to save face, even in the kicking position. Football players are the number one priority in Herm's Kansas City.

Plus, we already had way too many former Miami players on our roster. And, anyone else realize how incestuous the kicking game is in the NFL? Lawrence Tynes replaced Jay Feely in New York and then we bring Feely in for a visit. Nick Novak has been on Washington's and Chicago's roster. Twice. Former Chiefs kicker Dave Rayner even signed with the Dolphins earlier this year before being released.

It's a small world when you've got unbelievable legs. (Guess the sports movie reference!)

He’s proven, over the long run, that he can handle the job.

He's a veteran ...

And, he’s been injured.

And, he was cut by the same Dolphins who he kicked so well for last year, and you’d think Parcells and Sparano would have some idea of how well he’d play this year before dropping him.

And, his try-our for the Chiefs was awful and he got out-kicked by a rookie and a guy with only 16 games worth of experience.

Veteran doesn’t mean much in this league when you tack on ‘injured’. And it means even less to a team in the midst of re-building and a ‘youth movement’ when the Veteran gets out-performed by the younger guys …

He got out kicked on one day.

The dude was lights out last year. 21/23 only missing two between 40-49 yards. I’ll take that any day.

Two days

He actually got out-kicked Monday AND Tuesday night. AND it wasn’t even close. I’m all for a veteran who can kick consistantly, but if he can’t make over 70% of his field goals over two days in practice and our other two kickers are making over 85% of the exact same kicks then something is wrong with the guy (still injured?). I was all for bringing him in and I’m all for sending him home with that performance…

Actually ...

If my math is right, Novak hit 90 and Barth hit 93 (including 100% on Tuesday) of their kicks. Those are both pretty solid numbers, and they both rival or exceed what Feely was able to do last season.

Personally, I think you’d have a harder time justifying keeping Feely who was under 75% in practice (read: with no game pressure on him) than you would keeping Novak and Barth.

Signed Feely to be our kicker

I have to disagree on one of the thoughts in the post.

You may be saying that in hindsight, that’s what occurred. So I see where you’re probably coming from. But when they signed him, my gut tells me that they wanted him to be our kicker.

But the commitment to competition principle and earning a job is still there. So the little “let’s kick 15 a day for two days” thing was dreamed up. Similar to Krumrie’s hand fighting drill, its usefullness as a tryout is a little dubious. Seems like last year’s 90% performance by Feely would count for a little more. But like others have said, kudos for not using the past alone to predict the future. It’s why so many people fail at investing. They see how a mutual fund has performaned and put money into it the year after it did well.

I think Novak and Connor had plenty of competition motivation without adding another indredient. But gotta love Barth’s reported 15/15 performance. He showed in college — with a pressure packed kick against Miami — that he can do well under game pressure, as well.

I'm not sure about this move

I for one think it was a tad early to drop him. He’s a proven kicker in the NFL and had a good season last year. I think it had more to do with him being rusty and the roster cut down being so close.

I’m pulling for Barth and apparently he’s starting to take hold of the spot. I’d like to see more game time kicks though.

Kingpin came to mind when I read the “sports reference quote” but I can’t quite place it.

Comfort with the holder

I think Feely’s agent had somewhat of a legitimate point to make regarding the fairness of the first day when the other kickers were use to the snapper, holder and even turf. I think Barth will do well and hope he’s our guy and that we stick with him after he misses one in a game. But Feely did have a little disadvantage.

This assumes they kicked on the Chief’s premises and didn’t go to some neutral high school field or something that actually would have been a bit more fair. Maybe they did?

It's possible

that Feely’s injury was more serious than he wanted to admit…I mean, when you come to try out for a spot on an NFL roster, you ought to bring your A game, and apparently, Feely’s was a 67% the first day…not good.

I'm glad to see Barth stepping up

Even though Feely isn’t an old man by kicking standards, the idea of a home-grown kicker is nice. Sort of a Medlock redemption.

That said, I think there has to be a little more to the story. Like some have eluded, maybe that hamstring injury is hampering more than they said.

I certainly am not buying into the “chiefs are running a circus” nonsense that is all over the star’s website.

Those making an excuse for him being “rusty”… there’s just no excuse for that if you’re trying to win a job in the NFL. He should have been in top form.
