The Brodie Croyle Theory

Some of you have heard my theory on Brodie's play over the small amount of starts he has had. I really just wanted to put it up in a forum and let people talk about it and maybe prove me wrong...

It is simple really: Brodie has only really played well against the defensive scheme he practices against, the Tampa Two.

You can see it starting from his early games. Remember the Colts game he played so well and we thought he had arrived and was taking over the team...? Well after all these games and specifically after last week at Miami I think the theory still stands strong...

what do you all think?

Hadn't Considered That

I’m not familiar enough with what every team runs to be able to tell, but that seems to make sense. The question would be, how were Croyle’s numbers against every team he’s played running Tampa 2 as opposed to other defenses?

Anyone know which of his opponents have run Tampa 2 and which haven’t?

Just A Quick Peek At Croyle's Game Log

http://scores.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=9671

Shows that he had significantly higher completion percentages against Detroit and Indianapolis, two teams that run Tampa 2. He only had 12 attempts in the Lions game though and the one INT he threw knocked down his QB rating, so I’m not sure it’s a fair sampling, but the Indianapolis game was far and away his best performance of the year. His second best performance came against Tennessee and I’m not quite sure what they run (I don’t think it’s Tampa 2), but then his performance in that game wasn’t dramatically better than his average performance last year. Beyond that, he was pretty much horrible in every other game last year. And he hasn’t been good against any team in the preseason except Chicago (who are a Tampa 2 team).

So I guess my verdict would be that it’s an interesting suggestion, but there’s not really enough evidence to say for sure one way or the other. We’ve got both Tampa Bay and Buffalo (both Tampa 2 teams) on our schedule this season, so if Croyle performs a lot better in those games as opposed to the rest of the season, I’d say your theory’s got legs to it.

You guys rock

Observations, analysis and what-ifs like that, woodman, are great stuff on this site. Good investigation, U!

Tennesee runs man coverage

almost exclusively… they don’t do a lot of zone coverage. They certainly don’t run Tampa 2.

This was brought up in Hard Knocks with the Cowboys when they’re discussing Adam Jones coverage abilities… he had to basically learn how to play zone because he pretty much never did at Tennessee.

Except

we don’t run the Tampa 2…even last year when we weren’t able to blitz as much as we wanted to, we still weren’t running the Tampa 2…the Tampa 2 actually becomes more like a Cover 3, because the MLB is supposed to drop into deep coverage between the safeties. Napolean Harris couldn’t do that – it remains to be seen whether Pat Thomas can (but I bet this guy could =) )

Sorry

didn’t finish my post – I think we want to run a variant of the Cover 2 that alternates between rushing 4 and dropping 7 into zones and blitzing with some man coverage underneath with 2-deep safeties. The blitzing could come from the LB’s, leaving one or both corners in man coverage, or from the corners or safeties, but in that case, we need a linebacker who can get deep to replace the safety who blitzed.

Maualuga

He’s who I’d want manning the middle for the Chiefs in 2009.

If Croyle turns out to be a competent NFL quarterback

I am all for that.

If not, that could make for a very interesting first round choice decision

Looking Over The 2009 QBs

I don’t see anyone out there who really merits a first-round selection. I’d rather see us go linebacker in the first round then go for Chase Daniel or Graham Harrell later down the road.

I agree, I'd be thrilled to see him in Red & Gold

He’s going to make some team EXTREMELY happy whether it’s us or whomever, the guy is an animal…

Our scheme ...

Sorry PVC I shouldn’t have been that specific I guess, we do run a Cover-2 shell defense, for now…I know obviously that Gunther changes things up but you know what I mean…

No apology necessary

This year, we may run the Tampa 2 (which is really a weird Cover 3)…but with Slowa Harris manning the MLB spot last year, we ran the Cover 2, because Napolean can’t drop back between Page and Pollard quickly enough
