Front Line Confusion
Excuse me for beating a dead horse providing that being the case, but I've been wondering why we're approaching the offensive line they way we are and its arrangement? Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought McIntosh played LT in Miami and Jones RT in New York? Why not leave Branden at his original positon too? I remember seeing explanation for Alberts situation but cannot recall its reasoning. Thanks for any info and btw this is site great

Yeah, I don't like they approach the line.
I wanna see our draft picks in there to develop. My guys from left to right would be Taylor, Albert, Niswanger, Stallings, Richardson… that could be a pretty awesome line in a few years. But taking Albert at #15 overall, you pretty much have to use him as LT… but moving guys around from one side to the other or from tackle to guard doesn’t seem like it’s the best way to go about fixing our line.

Yeah, let's bench
our Pro Bowl Left Guard…not likely.

They're trying to make the best of what they've got
Albert has Pro Bowl Left Tackle athleticism and played LT in high school and would have played LT in college except they already had a good LT when Albert arrived, D’Brickshaw Ferguson, who was a 1st round pick by the Jets. Left Tackle being the most important position on the line, the Chiefs want to make sure they get a good solid player in there for the long term.
Adrian Jones was a failure as a tackle in the NFL, but apparently Herm feels he can do a passable job at the Guard position where he will have help and so far during the preseason at least, he’s been OK.
McIntosh was moved to RT because Albert is the future at LT, but McIntosh is still a decent player when healthy so they wanted to keep him in the lineup. McIntoshs injury problems are about to the point of it not being worth the Chiefs time to keep him in the lineup though. What good are you if you’re only playing at 50% because you’re always recovering from an injury?

Plus
Waters is our best lineman by far, and we cant move him from LG. That was Alberts college position, I think.
by Lanier63 on Aug 26, 2008 7:24 PM CDT 0 recs
Great reply, ChiefDJ. I didn’t know D’Brickshaw played there in college. He’s looked good this preseason covering Favre’s rear end…
Doh! That’s right Branden played left not right guard. Waters is so concrete I in my mind started to associate the other guard position w/ Albert
Didn’t Jones play RT as a Jayhawk too? A shame he couldn’t make it in the big leagues

Not only that
But the guy that came in after Brick left, Eugene Monroe, was supposed to be hot shit at LT. So rather than have him learn a new position and allowing Albert to move to LT, they just left Albert where he was. I can’t say that was a bad move… Monroe didn’t allow a sack all season. He did miss two games to injury, and Albert filled in at LT during that time.

im hoping
that taylor or richardson can step in a be a solid RT one of them has got to be but it will take sometime to develop richardson and then maybe we can grab a solid RG in free agency or the draft next year then we would be great on the line for years to come

And I'm a prayin'
I know that Herm is a man of faith and I’m sure he is with me, praying every day for Richardson to “get it” and be the guy, Alberts to get healthy quickly, and for a miracle like Peters from Buffalo coming available. Herm, throw down a stick or something!

Just do not throw it in front of the water jug.
Herm is jinxed you know, Brodie might slip and break an arm.

Mac back to LT
As a reserve, imo.
I think part of McIntosh’s injuries are related to new muscle stresses at RT. If we assume Albert will return soon and stay reasonably healthy, keep Taylor at LT for now. Start Richardson and let the rebuilding begin. He’s improved a lot in very little time, it appears. When Albert returns, make mac the reserve LT so he doesn’t have the wear and tear. Then let Taylor and Richardson battle it out for RT, with Taylor being a swing guy as needed.

Yep!
Mac needs to be a reserve, he gets injured very easily it seems.

I mostly agree
Everything you say makes perfect sense. The only problem is that Taylor is not really suited to be a RT. He is a pretty decent pass blocker, but his lack of size hurts him in the run game and you really would like the right side to be dominant run blockers.
McIntosh back to reserve LT makes perfect sense. Richardson…. I worry about him at this point. He did ok against Miami, but I think he needs work before he can be dependable.
RT is really a problem for us at this point. The candidates are the man of glass, the inexperienced prototype and the undersized finesse blocker. :( No perfect candidate there.

Richardson's first pass protection play...
He looked like a statue. Game 1 or 2? Yes, I’d be nervous, too.
This is kind of the year of the “inexperienced prototype,” isn’t it? Rebuilding and all?
Well…while keeping our QB out of harm’s way as much as possible.

Line
Albert ,Waters….Niswanger…Richardson….Taylor……
I would really like to see Richardson at Guard maybe he has played and i haven’t seen it but I think that Taylor and Richardson need to be on that right side, and I am confident that they will grow and become very good football players
by IamtheGreatest on Aug 26, 2008 10:27 PM CDT 0 recs
They aren't going to put Richardson at Guard
I think he can be a good RT, he just needs time to develop.

According to Gretz
Jones has been performing above expectations at RG… and now that I think of it I can’t recall him falling apart in the last few games… but it’s hard to focus on a RG in the fracas.
I think the only shuffle we will see is when Albert returns… and that may impact RT – especially since MacIntosh has janky ankles. I don’t think we’ll see any change in the interior.

Above expectations
My expectations, for one, when I hear “former Jets player” are fairly low to start with. Wouldn’t take a lot to perform above the expectations I had for him. But frankly, my knowledge of him was zilch, so who am I to judge? I wish him well. Whatever’s best for the team.

A couple things....
Richardson has started to look alot better to me since his first, horrible play of pass protection…I dont know why they wouldnt put him at guard, he has the weight to hold off the big linemen but maybe his speed (or lack of speed) is not what they are looking for in the running game, with guards pulling and what not…
I disagree about Jones, even if that is disagreeing with Gretz himself…Nearly everytime L.J. has been tackled for a loss it has been at the fault of Jones that I have seen…A couple big pressures on Brodie last week I remember seeing 73 just standing and staring…
I think Herbie will do ok at RT, not sure if he is big enough to handle the bullrushers that occupy the Strongside End over there, maybe that is why they are wanting to keep the enormous road grater that is Richardson over there….
Waters is solid…still…
Rudy has looked really good, but two things I have noticed, If somebody jumps offsides he is snapping it, so Brodie, be ready (which he is probably coached to do, could cause a problem sometime…eek) and two, they pointed this out on the broadcast of one of these games, his height kinda puts him at a disadvantage as far as leverage is concerned when he has to snap the ball and THEN get back down to his proper leverage to take on the DT….but he has looked very solid so far….

There are not many NFL guards
who are 6’ 7" and 330 lbs. Richardson has prototypical Tackle size. Now if he can just improve his techniques, we might have something. if not, he should be a serviceable backup.

Leonard Davis
About the same size as B-Rich, didn,t Leonard Davis go to the pro-bowl? He struggled at tackle in AZ.
by Eric Allen on Aug 27, 2008 4:54 PM CDT 0 recs
Thanks Eric
I didnt get to reply quick enough….
But yes, there are not many NFL guards that big…but one who is, Leonard Davis, is a Pro Bowler and a stud…
