Around SBN: Dog Football! Which Breeds Are Best Suited For The Gridiron?

The Chiefs released veteran kicker Jay Feely today, one day after signing him.

Feely went 11-15 on field goals Monday and 13 of 15 today but that wasn't as good as either Connor Barth (28 of 30, including a perfect 15 of 15 today) or Nick Novak (27 of 30). Barth and Novak will kick for the job in Thursday night's game against the Rams at Arrowhead Stadium.

Much more to come, including some interesting comments from Feely's agent, in Wednesday's Kansas City Star.

Remember John Candy's character in Spaceballs?

I want to be able to cheer a FG that is good by yelling, “Barth!”

by PVChiefsfan on Aug 26, 2008 6:10 PM CDT reply actions

hehe

His character was actually named Barf… but you could yell either one and people would get the point.

I've heard 2nd hand

that 810 Sports is reporting that Feely only made SEVEN of 15 today. That would be considerably worse than the 11 of 15 the KC Star Blog is reporting.

Guess His Leg Really Was F***ed Up

Wow

Well kudos for bringing him in, and kudos for making a quick decision.
It wasn’t close to a game simulation, I’m sure, but there was certainly pressure.
Is it really too surprising, considering Miami let him go early?

by sunny D on Aug 26, 2008 6:17 PM CDT reply actions

At least they recognized it early

and didn’t stick with him just out of pride because he was a vet.

On The Plus Side...

That means Connor Barth is still in the hunt.

BARTH…BARTH…BARTH!!!

You're right

Kudos to you for your guy surviving and kicking well under the pressure of knowing his job was on the line if he screwed up. That’s what we need.

I’ve said all along, I don’t care who the kicker is as long as he makes the damn field goals.

One thing you can say about Barth

He had to know he was the low man on the totem poll and that Feely would have to royally screw up to not make it and the guy came through under the pressure. Perfect 15 of 15 under that pressure.

We need Paul Harvey

Given Feely's penchant for talking to the media

You probably will get to hear more about the story.
Not to get ahead of myself, but if Feely has unkind things to say about Carl, I hope people will recognize Carl’s moves to be in the best interests of the team. I consider the “get terms of agreement, bring him in, try him out, make a decision” to be pretty good management by the front office in this case. And the timing shouldn’t hurt Feely’s chances with someone else, excpept for the fact that he now has “Chiefs reject” on his resume.

But for now, let’s assume Feely will say nice things and how fairly he was treated.

by sunny D on Aug 26, 2008 6:30 PM CDT up reply actions

I doubt we'll hear a word from Feely

Was just a job tryout, kickers have them all the time.

by ChiefDJ on Aug 26, 2008 6:31 PM CDT up reply actions

Good point

Wasn’t exactly like he was auditioning for a VP of the USA job.
I had just heard that he likes to talk to the media, and it wasn’t always appreciated in Miami.

Teicher says his agent will have something to say

I wonder what that means?

Maybe they wanted to heat up the competition

Bring in some competition to spark something. I don’t know how else to explain this happening to a veteran kicker.

by Joel Thorman on Aug 26, 2008 6:28 PM CDT reply actions

Injury

I don’t think they brought in a guy who hit 90% of his field goals last year as a psychological gambit…I think the guy’s probably got some injury issues. Maybe that groin pull is worse than he’s letting on.

Bill Williamson, ESPN

“It will be interesting to see if Novak or Barth are rattled by this week’s development. In actuality, they should be recharged. They both essentially beat out Feely in a two-day tryout.”

Maybe with all the switching we have done

and arms like a lineman, we should have tried him at right tackle first?

I hope this photo works.

by Lanier63 on Aug 26, 2008 7:29 PM CDT reply actions

well...

that sucks and i feel like a jacka*s but hey i’m glad BAth stepped it up….we need that….I still think we should bring someone else in just to keep the competition rolling making both these guys better….

by IamtheGreatest on Aug 26, 2008 7:44 PM CDT reply actions

I'm happy that chapter was put to rest

I think it speaks volumns about Herm and Carl. Willing to bring in a proven talent to compete, yet not panicing by keeping him over Barth or Nick. These two have battled well and Thursday’s results will give us a kicker. I’m pulling for Barth just for the sake of developing a “franchise” kicker along with the rest of our team, but may the best leg win.

On that note, I’ve seen quite a bit of discussion about kickoff distance. I’d love to see us with a kicker that could consistantly put it out of the endzone, but those come few and far between. With the coverage I’ve seen recently, I think I’d rather see it hang high enough to allow the coverage team to swarm even if it only drops inside the 10. At least we can get there to make the stop. I’d like to see them try for hang time instead of consistently outkicking the coverage abilitiy. Am I off base on that thought?

by TXChiefan on Aug 26, 2008 8:03 PM CDT reply actions   1 recs

Not at all, you are on base for sure...

I’m a firm believer in hang time, I’d rather have them catch it on the 5 and get smothered at the ten then field it in the endzone, kneel down and start at the 20 =)

by KCFanatic on Aug 26, 2008 8:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Just because they didn't keep Feely

Doesn’t necessarily mean that Novak or Barth are going to be our kicker come opening day. It COULD happen, but there is a reason they brought Feely in in the first place. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them bring in a couple more kickers for tryouts.

I honestly have no opinion one way or the other. I just want a kicker that can put it through the uprights without a lot of drama. If one of the guys we’ve got on the squad can do that, great. But if not, I think they should keep looking.

by ChiefDJ on Aug 26, 2008 8:25 PM CDT up reply actions

Just don't jump, it is

o.k. we are fine.(Herm lingo for we are so screwed)

by Eric Allen on Aug 26, 2008 8:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Hermism

It’s OK. We’re fine. We brought in the kicker and he and the other kickers kicked and, all of a sudden, we had to cut one and kept two so now they’re the kickers. It’s fine. Its the NFL. It’s football. All of a sudden, those guys, the kickers, are under a lot of pressure and they stepped up and proved they were tough. And that’s really what you want from your kicker. To be tough. Football is a tough game and, all of a sudden, we have tough kickers. It’s fine. The kicker is the guy and if he goes down, all of a sudden, another guy gets a shot. Thats whats great about the NFL. There’s always another guy. We’re fine. It’s fine.

by ChiefDJ on Aug 26, 2008 9:13 PM CDT up reply actions

I think Barth will

be our opening day kicker, Novak has already shown what he is with previous teams. Barth came through in the most extreme situation for a young guy to have, playing for his job. He hit 100% when he needed to. Besides we stil have Carney on speed dial. If 5 cannot go then 9 will have to get in there. Yeah 71 he has a foot, but we’ll be fine.

by Eric Allen on Aug 26, 2008 9:21 PM CDT up reply actions

I think

I think they were planning to take Novak and Feely to St. Louis, but when Feely had a poor showing and Barth, who had to know he was the odd man out, didn’t miss a single kick, I think that impressed the decision makers.

I still think Novak has the lead in the competition, but I think the door is open for Barth if he can kick well at St. Louis.

I wouldn’t be bothered by Novaks past. All kickers improve over time. Just look at Feelys stats. When he was a rookie he was a 70% FG Kicker, but every year got better until last year he was 90%. Lots of kickers don’t get picked up for regular jobs for several years after they’re out of college.

Going with the obvious

I still can’t get over the fact that we wouldn’t have this problem if the Chiefs had simply drafted Mason Crosby last year.

by Dan Holmes on Aug 26, 2008 11:10 PM CDT reply actions

True

but hindsight is 20/20 and we can’t go back. Medlock and Crosby were similiar prospects coming out of college. We just happened to choose wrong.
