The Cut to 75
The roster cuts are coming soon... who do you think will be at the top of the list??
If it were up to me, the roster cuts would include two loads of B.S.
BJ Sams and Bobby Sippio
I thought Sams was uninspiring again. He looks like he lost all of his steps. At this point I'm not sure what he brings to the table. Will he somehow survive to 75 only to be cut in the move to 53? In spite of Savage's blunder on Saturday, he still seems to have much more upside.
Poor Bobby... I was really pulling for him to make the roster this year, but this is the second game where his "velcro" hands have looked like they were covered in vasoline. It's one thing to not have speed but have great hands... it's another to have neither. I think this is the end of the road for big Sip.
So who's on your cut list?

Whats the point of a 5 man cut?
I never understood why there is a 5 man cut, and then a week later 22 guys. Can’t they even that out a little?
Anyways, totally agree with you on Sams. That guys is so worthless. I thought for sure after he fumbled we’d never see him again but they stuck him out there again later on. I think its probably because the returner position is so if-fy. Everyone wants Savage to do returns, including me, but before this last week or two he had never caught punts before and thats pretty scary. A muffed punt or two can make a game where you’re close turn into a blow out in a hurry.
Other than Sams, I think it will be mostly no name guys.
Khayamm Burns, a safety. I think we all agree we’re pretty well stocked at safety right now.
Steve Octavian, LB. Never heard this guys name mentioned during a game.
Jonal Saint-Dic, DE. Same as above.
Maybe Rumph at LB. He seems to screw up a lot.
I dunno, maybe one of the bajillion O-linemen we have.

+1.
And it isn’t even a week later, only 4 days. It goes from 80 to 75, then four days later you have to go all the way down to 53.
Huh?

Here's what I found out
“You used to be able to take 90 guys to camp with all of the NFL Europe guys. At that time you could cut from 90 to 75 and then 75 to 53. This year they cut NFL Europe and allowed team to only take 80 guys to camp. But as a compromise they allowed teams to still keep the 75 cutdown number as the first date. They will review after the season and may change it.”

I forgot about NFLE
That makes a lot more sense. Thanks Chris.

I
remember watching Baltimore playing when B.J. Sams broke his ankle and I remember thinking “there goes his career”. If anyone doesn’t remember, or if they never saw it in the first place, the break was somewhat reminiscent of a Joe Theismann type injury. His ankle basically shattered and he was done for the season.
It really is a shame because not only was he one of the best special teamers in the NFL prior to his injury, but more importantly the guy probably out of a job. I really hope that he can return to form for another team (outside the AFC West of course) and be successful because there is nothing worse in pro sports than a career ending injury.

argh
That Theisman injury is almost unwatchable… It makes me shiver just thinking about it.
I wish Sams the best of luck as well. He actually made a pretty good/acrobatic play on that deep ball at the end of the Phins game, but the coverage broke it up. I’ve never seen him play WR before, so that was interesting. Maybe we’d be reconsidering this if he’d made that catch? Nah… I doubt it.

Michael Allan
man, he had a terrible game… I don’t think he caught a single ball that was thrown to him. Not only that, but I think one of his butterfinger maneuvers led to the INT right after we recovered that fumble in the 4th.
I know he’s a developmental player, but I think he should at best fall back to the practice squad this year.
I don’t think he’ll get cut in this upcoming round… but likely in the move to 53.

agreed.
He really has shown he needs another year on the PS. I don’t think he is at risk at being picked up and getting put on a 53-man, and he is definitely worth a spot to see if he can develop.
by rockchalk on Aug 25, 2008 1:26 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think he needs to be cut
We’ve got Cottam and if Merritt turns out to be as good a blocking TE as everyone says, there really is no reason to have a soft TE that can’t block and apparently, can’t catch.
We can always pick up a 3rd TE when Tony G retires. No need carrying baggage at a position we’re pretty well stocked in already.

Chase Coffman next year in round 2 if Tony G retires
If Coffman doesn’t go sooner… then we can have Cottam and Coffman and blow some shit up for real!
But really, I agree 100% DJ. Spot on.

Tony is not going anywhere yet
as long as this team shows SOME improvement each year, I think Tony will play out this contract

yes...
but i disagree on Octavien, he has been solid…and Gun likes Rumph….it will be interesting to see all this…
we are so close to the regular season..i love it

Practice Squad fodder
the two you mention will likely be on the PS if they clear waivers. I don’t know that either will have a problem doing so. But yes, I agree that they may survive this round.

Octavien
He was getting quite a bit of notice during the Cardinals game. He was usually in position and he was one of the few defensive players executing tackles at that point. Personally, I’d rather have him than Pat Thomas because I think he’s got the ability to be really good.
Supporting the lesser of two evils is still supporting something evil.

Octavien
When have you even seen him in a game? I’ve not heard his name even announced. From what I’ve heard, they liked him OTAs but he’s at the bottom of the barrel all training camp.
by ChiefDJ on Aug 25, 2008 5:30 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
In the Cardinals game
he made a fantastic tackle in the backfield after taking on and somehow shedding the block of the pulling guard – you could hear the guard hit him but he shrugged it off stepped to the side and got the runner.

I missed it
I’ll have to go back and watch it again.
by ChiefDJ on Aug 25, 2008 10:13 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think it was later in the game
and Octavien came around the offense’s right side, maybe between the guard and tackle, and the LG was pulling…they met in the hole and Octavien still managed to slip by and assist in the tackle (i think when he met the guard, it forced the RB to cut back into a few of our D-linemen.)

Jonal Saint-Dic
I saw this guy play football at Michigan State.
He was a beast!

I will go with these five for the first cut
Anthony Alabi – Did anyone see this guy this year?
BJ Sams – Will tell him its because it will give him time to make another team
John Paul Foschi – We are set at tight end
Edwin Harrison – See Alabi
Tre Stallings – Going out on a limb on this one, he has had time to develop

So we're all in agreement
that Sams doesn’t make this first cut?
by Chris Thorman on Aug 25, 2008 12:40 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
In all likelihood
Sams will make the first cut, mainly just because Savage is still very new to returning kicks and its scary having a guy that has never fielded punts before having 11 angry guys coming at you at 25 mph. A couple of muffed punts could knock our fringe team right out.
I think they will keep Sams around till the last possible moment to make sure Savage can handle it. But that being said, Sams is worse than Eddie Drummond and should by no means make the team.
by ChiefDJ on Aug 25, 2008 5:32 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I have to disagree.
No one is worse than Eddie Drummond.
by KCScuba on Aug 25, 2008 9:00 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I dunno
At least Eddie wouldn’t fair catch it if no one was within 20 yards of him. Can’t say the same thing about Sams.

And in the preseason for pete's sake!
Whe you’re competing for a return job, I think the coaches will cut you a little slack if you take a little bit more of a chance. It’s like Herm preaches to them — know the situation. Sams needed to err on the side of making a return. The coaches also want to see the players who are blocking on that play. “It’s football!” as Matt might say. Catch it and run with it!
Which, btw, is why the Croyle interception (at the end of the first half) wasn’t so bad, even though it will look bad on a raw stat sheet. It was one of those situations late in the half where you take more of a chance with a throw because you need to make something happen in the closing minute. I thought it was an appropriate risk. (May not have been a good throw physically — couldn’t tell.) If he’d made the same throw on the opening series, I would not have been happy. So I’m seeing some maturity on Croyle’s part.

I'll take a fair catch over Eddie's results
5 yard return or fumble

my vote
I expect to see Manderino go and I also think they’ll hold on to Sams a little longer just to keep the pressure on Savage. Foschi, Trevor Johnson, Saint-Dic, and Durde are my other votes.
by ChiefsDude on Aug 25, 2008 1:00 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
We'll keep Durde.
Just to keep him on the PS as the extra 9th man.
by rockchalk on Aug 25, 2008 1:27 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
My first five cuts.
1) Sams — I’m sorry, but this guy just isn’t that good.
2) Manderino — I think its pretty obvious we’ve settled on the FB position in Cox, and we will likely want to keep the competition alive in most of the spots.
3) Saint-Dic — He has hardly seen field action at all, and was basically the 80th man on the roster. Maybe a PS guy, though.
4) Joachim — He caught that one TD, sure, but he looks to clearly be the final WR on the roster, and is awfully raw. I wouldn’t be surprised for us to PS him, but he clearly isn’t ready to be on the 53 yet.
5) Alabi — I haven’t seen him on the field yet, and we have like a kabillion other offensive linemen. He gone.
by rockchalk on Aug 25, 2008 1:32 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I say manderino will stay til the last cut…but his job is as good as gone…. Joachim is gone, and alabi is gone…..durde and saint dic…..and you can pick who’s next but i’ll say Sippio just becasue the guy ain’t that good
by IamtheGreatest on Aug 25, 2008 6:12 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I'm predicting...
Hoyte and Trevor Johnson as the first two cuts…
Just kind of a premonition that came to me all of a sudden.
