Your Arrowhead Stadium Gameday Rituals

A couple of weeks ago, a reader e-mailed me asking about putting together an Arrowhead Stadium gameday guide, especially for fans who are traveling in from outside of the Kansas City area.
He had an excellent idea. The majority of the people who read AP do not live in Kansas City and when you do travel to Arrowhead for that special game, you want things to go right. You want the full Arrowhead/Kansas City Chiefs experience.
Of course, there isn't one magical experience, which is what makes Arrowhead the best stadium on the planet. There are thousands of awesome rituals and experiences on gameday.
I haven't been lucky enough to go to as many games as I've wanted over the years but I do have a few gameday requirements. First, because I would always travel from the west to the east to get to the stadium, I'm taking the shortcut down Coal Mine Rd (which is off of Blue Parkway) and sneaking in past all of the traffic.
Second, and we haven't had a good BBQ war on this site in a long time, is to get Oklahoma Joe's BBQ before I left. The Z-Man sandwich - a brisket sandwich with provolone cheese and an onion ring on it - is the best BBQ sandwich I've come across in my life.
After getting to the stadium, I can't say I'm much help for entertainment.
This is where you guys come in. Let us know you gameday rituals, experiences and advice for the out of towner. We'll eventually put this all into some sort of guide with all of your recommendations.
If you were making a special trip to Kansas City to see the Chiefs, what would you have to do?

Gates/L.C.'s/Oklahoma Joe's
All are great options.
I’m like Chris – I take the back routes.

+1 on L.C.'s
Bryants, Gates, Danny Edwards, OK Joe’s, etc are all good, but PALE in comparison to L.C.‘s. Plus, after Glen Dorsey had been in town a few days he was asked if he had sampled the BBQ yet, and he indicated that the FIRST place that his teammates had taken him was L.C.’s. The beef sandwich is incredible, the ribs are awesome, but the burnt ends are SUBLIME.

The Z-Man is inferior to the Hog Heaven
Onion Ring, okay that’s fried stuff with meat, pretty cool.
Slaw, WHOA, that’s a little too close to vegetables. What is this? Cafe 600?*
Now the Hog Heaven…
Let’s see you got pulled pork? Umm check.
Remember to request Bubba Sauce… check.
Wait, wait, me thinks there’s not enough pork here.
Add smoked sauges slices. Ahh much better.
And let’s make that a JUMBO.
I will say the Z-man share the nexis of deliciousness with the butters toasted kaiser roll.
Although, the Smokey Joe has a pretty affectionate spot in my left atria. It’s the sandwich you eat with a fork.
L.C.‘s is fine if, you know, you’re short on plastic tubs or are really a baked beans fan in carnivore’s clothing.
As for Gates, I’ve often argued that welfare should be replaced by Gates catering, that’s not a knock, its that I feel it’s hearty and more efficient than say food stamps. It should be a staple of every diet, but it just doesn’t have the centerpiece “it” quality. It’s the Dan Marino to OKJ’s Joe Montana. But a life without wonderbread stuck to the roof of your mouth is not worth living.
Also, let’s put an honorable mention in for Arthur Bryants, they do chicken wire, burnt ends and sauce right. Maybe the Johnny Unitas of BBQ, always makes the lists, rarely number 1, not perfect (see unseasoned steakfries and occasional fat gristle), but some qualities are unbeatable -tomatoeless unsweetened sauce, jimmy carter, stephen speilburt, and carboys with foil (see whitewalled flattop and jump passes).

Ribs
Guy and Mae’s Tavern in the little town of Williamsburg, KS (about 1 to 1.5 hours south of KC off of 35). Best. Ribs. Ever.

Thanks Guys - Great topic (and good timing).
I’m jetting down w/ 3 friends this winter (3 Chief and 1 Bronco fan) for 1 possibly 2 games this season. We’re all (okay, 3 of us) are PUMPED for the event and it’s still preseason. None of us have been to K.C. so naturally, apart from game day stadium chit chat, much of our lunch time pre-trip banter has been about K.C’s famous BBQ. Any sincere recommendations would appreciated.
Additional advice on the following items would be greatly appreciated;
1) Tickets/ Seats. Where’s the best place in the stadium to watch and experience the game ??
2) Hotel. It’s has to be VERY NICE but you know what they say… Location… Location….Location
3) Great Bar (for pre & post game entertainment)
4) Live Music – it’s not going to be about football the whole time we’re there.
5) Restaraunts – Can’t eat BBQ the entire time – so what’s the best K.C. has to offer.
any and all help is welcome !!

A few more questions
I’m coming into town for the Denver game and I’ve got similiar questions to Cat Stabber.
The hotel is the biggest question. Is staying near Crown Center to way to do things?
I assume I should be renting a car; but is there public transportation from downtown to Arrowhead?
by CSP on Aug 21, 2008 12:43 PM CDT 0 recs
Yeah, Crown Center is good
The stadium is actually farther out east…kinda in the middle of nowhere. There are hotels around it but you would have quite a drive to enjoy any of the nightlife, etc.

Tailgate Traditions
The best lot to tailgate in is lot C, bar none. C7 is you really want to hang with some players. We’ve got the live band, and meth man, and some home made pyrotechnics.
The ultimate tailgate tradition has to be the steak of life. A group of people gather as the tailgate is winding down. One steak is cooked, usually marinated with a photo of a Chiefs legend to impregnate the steak with past Chiefs greatness (Stenerud and Okoye are favorites). The steak is cooked; one person grabs it off the grill yells “Steak of Life!” takes a bite and throws it to the next Chiefs fan. This continues until the steak if gone and the ritual is rumored to bring eternal life (obviously true since no one who has ever eaten the steak of life has died). We have been doing this at literally every Chiefs game since around 1999. Its a beautiful thing to see in person.

KC Hot Spots
For food:
Best pizza – Waldo Pizza at 75th and Warnall
Best sushi – Jun’s at 75th and State Line on the KS side
Best ribs – Gates on Main
Best samich – The real Bryants in the ghetto
Best vegetarian – Either Eden’s Alley at 47th and Jefferson or Bluebird downtown (look it up)
Best Italian – Carmen’s Cafe in Brookside
Best Wine List with out taking out a second mortgage – Joe D’s in Brookside
Best Thai – Thai Place in West Port, could eat there 5 times a week.
Most overrated burger – Westport Flea Market, although they get bonus points for good karaoke, lose points for cash only
For booze-
If you’re in town for the weekend, Che Charlies at 38th and Broadway on Fridays is killer.
Lava Room and News Room across the street aren’t bad.
Red Balloon at 75th and I-35, killer karaoke, best I’ve ever seen and I’ve seen a lot. Filthy filthy bar, in a good way.
Entertainment-
Jardines on the Plaza if you’re a nose in the air type of dude.
The Foundation in the ghetto if you’ve got soul. The party doesn’t get jumping till 2am. Blues, Friday. Jazz, Saturday.
BB’s Lawn Side on Thursday night isn’t bad either. Above average food, above average music.
Hotel-
Beats the piss out of me, I live here.
I could probably come up with more if needed. Note, these rec’s won’t help if you’re a collar poppin’ douchbag. If that’s the case I’d try the White Power and Light district.

Serious humor HIV 2 E
Collar poppin – that’s just funny. Okay a couple of us are “collar poppers” during the week (me included) – but it’s the music that binds us (we’ve been playing together for years) – so the music component is KEY to the weekend (Blues and R&R)
Thanks a bunch for the info !!
(I gassed the douchebag part as it defintely doesn’t fly with this crew)
by Cat Stabber on Aug 21, 2008 1:42 PM CDT 0 recs
If you're a muscian the Foundation...
is an open jam both Friday and Saturday nights. Same goes for BB’s on Thursday, the house band plays and then opens the stage up to whoever.

Chiefs Fan
Wow. This is getting me excited, I’ve been a chiefs fan for about 10 years (since the 1st grade when I lived in OPark- I’m in West Texas now and am consequently really far away). I havent been to a game since but have kept track all of these years. I just got out of college and have my first “real job” now, and am going to try to make a game this season (not sure which). Seriously though, thanks for the advice, the only memories of KC that I remember are “Skys” and the fountain.

I flew down to L.A. / Anahiem in Feb
to watch a Flames game and sneak in a winter round of golf. I had a steak at an RC’s there – it was good – but you’re right, the price was steep.
If I’m gonna pound beef or pork in KC it’ll be BBQ. Thanks for the tip on the Ribs !!

My gameday....eeeehhhh
I have only been to 3 Chiefs games (none above 35 degrees)…My drive is about 2.5 hours and I usually enter at the Blue Ridge Cutoff or whatever that is called…
I usually arrive at about 1030 and since I am such a rookie to it and didnt go with large groups of people I haven’t really successfully tailgated there (Suggestions?)…I have only really gone into that goofy tent, to keep warm…
BUT, one of the cool things I love to do on game days is go in the stadium early…I just love looking around…that AND you can go way down front even if your ticket is not for down there and watch warmups and the players come in and out of that side tunnel thing behind the bench…I watched 69 warm up down there every game I went to and have spoke to players (Webb, Boone, Tony) and Herm, its a good experience, especially if you have young people with you…
Bad weather = Derrick Johnson jersey, Good Weather = my nicer DT jersey (crosses self)
hope this helps some, bring on suggestions about my lack of tailgating!

Our gameday
We start our 2 hour drive at 5:30 in the morning for 12:00 games so we can be at the gates for the parking lot by 7:30 or 8:00. When they open up the gates its a race to get a spot and get set up to tailgate. We set up two canopys, tables, chairs, t v, grill, flag, and more. We have built a small 4’ x4’ trailer all painted up in chiefs that we keep all our tailgating gear in. This saves a lot of time. All we have to get ready for a game is food and your favorite beverages. We have a group of 10-15 that go to the games and tailgate with us. My favorite day at arrowhead was the first ever thanksgiving night game. The weather was great. The game was great. And the half time show was awsome. We think that tailgating is just as important as the game.

That was the last time I’ve been to a game, and I think it ruined me. It was perfect. I afraid to go to another game because it might pale in comparison.

That first Thanksgiving game was epic.
Just a first rate night from start to finish. Good weather, good game, big win. My little bro volunteered to be on the field for the halftime show and managed to get a few wicked high kicks in.
