Dantrell Savage too small?

Dantrell savage may be considered small, but plays with a big heart and desire to show everybody who doubts his ability that he can succeed. At 5 foot 8  and 182lbs. he is considered small by NFL standards, however he is not the only "small" RB. here are two that are about the same size as Dantrell.

Star-divide

1) Maurice Jones-Drew is listed at 5 foot 7 and 208lbs. and he was drafted by jacksonville in the 2nd round in 2006.

2) Darren Sproles is listed as 5 foot 6 and 181lbs.  Darren was selected by San Diego in the 4th round of the 2005 draft.

both of these players have shown that just because you are "small" that you can be a good or even great running back in this leauge.  Dantrell probably wont be a running back for the chiefs ( i think he will send B.J Sams packing) he will still show all the critics that knock his size that he can be a good if not great player in the leauge.

Sproles is a good comparison

Jones-Drew is a lot stockier, which is huge for an RB.

Savage has a badass name too.

Savage looks stocky

I was watching the Arizona game and for a few plays I didn’t even know Savage was on the field. Given his height/weight stats, I was expecting to see a scrawny, short RB (I think Sproles looks scrawny). After I found out it was Savage, I kept thinking – “damn that guy looks stout for being a buck-eighty.”

Not that it matters, but I think he looks a lot beefier than his measurements indicate. He’s not as thick as MJD (who reminds me of Kirby Puckett), but he still looks beefier than I imagined. He does remind me of Priest Holmes in that regard.

Kirby Puckett

Great comparison.

Thanks for the heads up on how Savage looks. I’m a bum and still haven’t watched the games yet.

I remember a couple guys that were pretty short...

named Priest Holmes and Dante Hall… food for thought.

Savage

I don’t think he’ll ever be big enough to get a LOT of time at RB. I think they will have some specially designed plays with him in there. But his size doesn’t really make any difference in the return game.

how can they say he is small when there are a few players who were small! and i would love to see him be dante hall pt. 2

Warrick Dunn

Full-time back for most of his career. Still playing after over a decade.

Supporting the lesser of two evils is still supporting something evil.

there ya go!

I knew I was forgetting a great physical comparison to Savage. Dunn is almost a perfect match to Savage height/weight wise.

Dunn is still going strong, and is 33 now… he is still productive as a situational back.

Good point

I don’t think Warrick Dunn could run in this Chiefs offense full time. He never had over 300 attempts in a season and was barely a 1,000 yard rusher a few times in his career.

I know that wasn’t your point but I still wanted to throw it out there for discussion.

When SD drafted Sproles

they originally used him as a returner, then started working him as a third down back, and now, it’s almost like he is a change-of-pace back…his role has definitely grown – I could see the same thing happen with Savage…

Isn't it amazing the change in depth at RB from last year

We weren’t sure if bennett could cut it as a number 2. Now we’re discussing our #4 running back as a legitimate weapon.

Of course

we didn’t know at that time what we had in Kolby Smith.
