Did you see this play? TG was wide open

I am writing this from work because I woke up thinking about it after I watched the game yesterday.  I hate to put  a disclaimer on it but.. I could be incorrect in some of the assignments (I don't think so but maybe)  I am open to discussion on this it might take me a while to respond but TG was open!

During the second drive in the first quarter with about five minutes left its third down and the Chiefs needed 8 yards to convert (if memory serves correct)  The receivers were covered through progression Brodie arrived at the check down to Smith.  While I watched on DVR at full speed it looked like the safe play and probably the correct choice.  But... when the replay came on I noticed something that just did not make since at all.  The play looked like a weak side flood (I am not that versed in play calling or actual plays less my experience with Madden) which is a play I run in madden on third down often especially in mid yardage territory 4-7 yards or possibly on an audible if outside linebackers look to be blitzing and I can pick one of them up.  The formation normally starts out with a modified I with the full back lined up offset to the left  the TE can line up on the line or in the slot, with two wide receivers, and the half back lined up further behind the full back yet directly behind the quarterback.  The wide receivers run corner routes and or comebacks,  The full back can run a pattern to the flat or can stay in to block, the half back runs a check down to pull the middle linebacker towards him.  The key to this whole play is the TE and the linebackers.  Tony chipped the strong side backer at the line and Damion took over so Arizona was rushing five (w/ the d line) the weakside backer was covering the full back (cox I think) and Kolby started to make his cut over the top of the lines.  When Colby did that the linebacker normally freezes  at this point you have just a split second to make a decision depending on what else is going on

1. Check down because the safety is coming over to help with the tight end and the coverage downfield is on point.  (Which I did not see the angles were not great from the replays though)

2. Check down because the blocking is breaking down  (it was not)

3. Stare down the check down and the second the MLB commits hit the window outside of his reach to the streaking TE for atleast 15 - 20 yards

Brodie chose option number two kinda…Show him what he won Vanna.  A front row seat to the current MVP of our team Dustin as he continues to gain more practice than any other punter in the league!!!

I joke a lil and hopefully Dick and Brodie have already gone over the film and realized this.  I have never put down Brodie before (except when he tried to make the shoelace tack in Detroit and got his hand stomped on)  and I know it is preseason, he might still be a little shell shocked from last year getting knocked around, and chan might want to show some reserve…. No I’m sorry from what I saw Brodie blew it.  I know it is just one play but come on.  I practiced with my freshman football team in high school during hell week and never played organized football again but I know that play was blown. (that is in fact the epitome of arm chair quarterback J)

I have yet to see the progression from Brodie Croyle that warrants a starting job in the NFL.  I hope he proves me wrong or my Rewind button on my DVR might wear out if the season is anything like that play.

what's up fellow cali

here is the deal. brodie is going to miss open receivers. all quarterbacks do. but you are right, let’s hope he watches film and learns this stuff. that’s what separates the starting NFL QBs who have solid careers from Damon Huard. No disrespect to Huard, but there is a reason he is a life long backup. But that is what the preseason is for. I would be worried if he came out and lit it up in the preseason. let him make mistakes now when it doesn’t count. hopefully in the coming weeks, he will show improvement.

let’s not forget that eli manning was about to me run out of NY before he turned it around in the second half of last season. it took him several years to figure things out. it is extremely rare for a QB to come into the league and just dominate. heck even tom brady rode the bench and it wasn’t until a freak injury bledsoe that allowed him in. otherwise, we may not be talking about brady today.

even if croyle has a bad year, you have to stick with him. give him a shot and not have to worry about looking over his shoulder. i don’t know what part of cali you are in, but i am in no-cal and all i hear about is alex smith this and alex smith that. the poor guy really hasn’t had a true shot. he has played for 4 offensive coordinators, a shitty offensive line and injuries. croyle is in a similar situation. he will make mistakes, but if you yank him everytime he does, how do you know how he will handle adversary? let’s see how he plays when he gets knocked around. will he come back the next play and do it again or will he make adjustments. he didn’t get the reigns until halfway through last year and then he got hurt.

basically, let’s give him a chance.

I thought Alex was on track last year

The first two games of the year he came out like gangbusters… then the 49ers showed they had not really built the team yet. I see them competing for the nfc west ( I know that isn’t saying much but i still see them competing). Eli is a Superbowl champ but that is it. If he has a good season this year I might change my opinion… might. You are right Brodie should be able to adapt this year.

I DID see this play

I was at the game in the west endzone and know the play well from madden. At first glance, you would see Brodie properly checking down, one of the few times he has time to go through every read while IN the pocket. Anyway, he took the check down, but as he threw and I groaned inside, I saw the safety was LATE to Gonzalez, who was open.

Madden isn’t the best way to explain this, and we have no idea exactly where Gonzalez was in the progression. Although, considering he is a future hall of famer and our best receiver, he probably should have gotten the ball anyway. QB’s, especially young ones, make this read all the time to the check down receiver because (a) they’ve been told to be cautious or (b) they’re cautious because they aren’t confident enough to make the throw or read. I’m not sure which is true in Brodie’s case; maybe both are.

One play is not enough to criticize a young QB for. After all, he didn’t throw it to the other team, and it was a safe play (WIMPY…but safe).

Never giving up on your team is what makes you a good fan.

agreed.

Those sound like great seats.

I think...

Brodie has kind of been instructed to throw to the unproven WRs when he can…I know that is pretty unlikely since that just adds one more thing to have to process as you are going through your progression…but Bowe and Gonzalez have been thrown to so much less…has to be somethin there…

you might be on to something

I was thinking they might be holding back on Bowe and Gonzo for fear of injury.

I watched the replay on that several times

I think Brodie probably just didn’t see him. If you watch the slow mo replay, the Umpire was directly between Tony and Croyle and by the time Gonzo came out from behind, Croyle had already started throwing the checkdown.

Ok

Which makes more sense. I don’t want to say i doubt Brodie or I think he is going to be as bad as the media states. I do want to say I rant on a sarcastic extreme sometimes. One play is not indicitive of how a player should be judged. Or Six games for that matter either. I give him this season… obviously if we are fourteen games and 0-14 becasue of him I will not be saying the same thing but that is well obvious.

Well who knows

Croyle is still a young QB and sometimes young QBs miss guys or get used to checking down too early. Its just as common as young QBs that hold onto the ball too long and get sacked.

The debate shouldn’t be about whether he did or did not see Gonzalez on this one play, but whether he is improving as time goes by. He’s only in his 2nd year starting and we can’t expect him to catch everything like Manning or Brady do.

True...

But do we have to wait for that play to be ran again to see if he has made the progress we are hoping for? I guess that would be the only way to see if progress is being made in a situational sense. If he starts winning games that would be progress too. Unfortunately we were so bad last year that anything is progress. I’m not trying to be pessimistic and break out the pitch fork and torch already. I do want to make this point that progress can be made at any point but is it moving in the correct direction? I have a weird analogy for this (I am huge on analogies- I had a hot English teacher who loved them) My son who is almost 2 is beginning to speak putting sentences together and on the road to communication. He said the F word yesterday and as a father I was somewhat set back. There are two things I can do ignore and hope it goes away because that’s my little man and he can do no wrong or teach him and help him learn that the word is for use in proper situations (not condoning but if he sees "an elderly man with a helmet and a cape on riding a bike down the street What the F** would be acceptable" –I can not remember the name of the comedian who said that but it was hilarious) and not as a replacement for having a larger vocabulary. In Brodie’s defense I know Herm and Dick are helping him learn from these and move forward right…
