Official Chiefs v. Cards Game Thread

Today, the undefeated Red & Gold (1-0 in preseason play) take on the Arizona Cardinals (0-1).

Here I was, hoping we'd get a showdown between two QBs from the 2006 Draft,  Brodie Croyle and Matt Leinart. However, there's a nasty rumor out there that Leinart is apparently so awesome, the Cards may be starting Kurt Warner instead. Again, it's because he's so awesome. You don't want to dull that kind of blade on the Chiefs, I suppose...

How crappy is our luck with rookies? We drafted 12 guys, and four of them are sure-fire to be out today. LT Brandon Albert and DT Glenn Dorsey are out. WR Kevin Robinson and TE Mike Merritt were never in. And now there's a rumor going around that RB Jamaal Charles is out. Why does God hate the Chiefs? Why can't we just rebuild in peace?

Anybody else think that LJ is just begging to break into the second level to lay a devastating hit on Cards' safety Antrel Rolle? If you remember correctly, it was Rolle who twisted LJ's neck in 2006 to a ridiculous degree before LJ could make it to the endzone and finish off the Cards. Even the Cards fans booed Rolle. I'm hoping for a rematch.

This thread is yours, folks. GO CHIEFS.

Part of me

wanted them to go for it in a preseason game on 4th and 3 in the red zone, but I realize that we need to test our kickers.
But still…

I'm with you.

I don’t think it’s much of a test for our kickers if we’re giving them gimme 30-yarders.

Barth

has been dead center on his fleld goals. and they’re straith, not curving.

Was that him who kicked it into the end zone earlier in the game? I didn’t catch which kicker that was.

Had to be him. Novak hasn’t been close at all this preseason.

Is it just me

or does LJ seem timid running through the holes he’s being given? Like he keeps trying to find a cut back instead of just lowering his shoulder like he always did. Maybe thinking about his last injury too much? Anyone seeing it? I could be just dead stupid and imagining it.

LJ Overall

Has not looked sharp, imo. He had a couple good runs, and he’s not dancing a lot, but he just doesn’t look strong to me. He slipped a little at the line of scrimmage on a goal to go play. If you had a different jersey on him and watched him assuming he was a rookie, I wouldn’t be that impressed. He deserves the benefit of the doubt going into the season based on what he can do, but a little power at the point of attach would be nice.

LJ's looked fine to me.

He could have run harder but LJ tends to tank it when he dislikes a playcall.

For instance, when we’re running him up the gut on a 3rd and goal from the 16-yard line…

How does Cottam look so far?

We University of Tennessee fans are expecting great things from him. Naturally, we think he’s on pace, but you have a much better sense of how he’s progressing into your team’s needs than we do.

Cottam hasn't done much today.

Because virtually no plays have been called for him. But he’s looked great in the time he’s been given.

This thread

is dead tonight. What’s going on?
Personally, I’m getting frustrated at the streaming radio from The Fox: it’s really behind NFL.com’s Game Center.

Oh, and

they continue to play commercials well into a drive and pick it up after missing several plays.

Darling and Croyle

Were not in sync in the first half. Lucky to avoid an interception early when a Croyle threw it to a place ahead of Darling, but Darling came straight back on a curl. Don’t know who to blame. Darling beat his man on an out and up, but Croyle threw it long by 4-5 yards.

Bingo.

I don’t know what that’s a reflection of, but it can’t be good for Darling’s chances at #2.

Of course, it would help if we actually ran serious passing routes. We’ve run virtually none, this has been all about our ground game so far.

Savage vs. Sams

I’ll take Savage’s hard run up the middle through the wedge for an average gain over Sams’ slow and sideways style of returning punts. Sams is mistake-free so far this year (unless you count the fair catch with too much room), but runs slower than Teicher chasing down facts for a story.

Teej looking agile.

I haven’t seen a DT move that quickly in a long time. Good grief!

Savage with a huge return.

Kid refuses to go down. Took it to the Cards’ 44.

Savage needs to make this team, folks.

Savage!

Just returned his way on to the 53 with that return to the 44 don’t you think?!?!?

by sunny D on Aug 16, 2008 8:51 PM CDT reply actions

I don't see how you deny him.

I think Kevin Robinson could get a shot but you can’t keep Savage down. Kid just wants it too much.

Savage on a punt return

Looked a little nervous on the catch, but you could really see the difference in quickness from Sams. Herm’s arm was around Savage afterword. I think we got ourselves a return guy, gentleman.

Price looked excellent

Flowers was super
Savage incredible
Cox was very good
O and D lines have some work to do.
