Q&A with Herm Edwards

UW-RF

Could this be a sign that we're keeping B.J. Sams?

KR B.J. Sams has worked in individual drills at WR, but got little work in team action.  But he caught a nice pass from QB Damon Huard on a third-and-7 play that moved the sticks.  Sams beat CB Tyron Brackenridge.

One of the plays of the day:

Bowe tip-toed the back line as he was shoved by a defender, ever mindful of the new revision to the “push rule.” The WR got two feet in bounds and counted the TD for the offense.

The time in River Falls is winding down as Herm reflects on his memories from years past:

“Yeah. It’s a good place. I was here in the beginning when the fire engines were here and they had a parade for us. No more parades. But they’ve upgraded the place. I think they’ve done a good job, especially this year with the dorms we’re staying in. You know (Chiefs groundskeeper) Andre (Bruce) comes up here and does the field, so the field is good. The fans are very good, they’re always glad to see us. We do what we’ve got to do. We don’t need a parade. It was okay the first year, but after 20 years, 19 years, you don’t need a parade.”

If Sams Can Competently Play WR

I’m fine with keeping him. But if he’s just going to be the poor man’s Eddie Drummond (who, last I checked, was trying to play WR for the Steelers) then why bother? It takes full-time WRs about 3 years to develop their skills, so even if Sams is ahead of the curve because he’s been in the NFL, you’re still looking at a year or more for him to likely be productive at the position…after which he’ll maybe have about a year before he starts to decline. Why not invest that time and those reps in a young guy who could have an actual career at WR?

What's Sams been doing with his time?

Has he been catching balls from Juggs all day? Why didn’t he work with the WR group from the beginning? Is he thinking about switching to FB if his return prospects dim?

Smells To Me

More like Sams knows he’s not going to make the cut so he’s trying to get work wherever he can.

can someone tell me what the updated rule about being force out of bounds is on receptions? This is the first I’ve heard of it.

Updated Rule

A catch requires both feet to land in bounds. Last year the referee could rule that the offensive player had made a catch if both of his feet didn’t land in so long as the referee determined he was “forced out” and would have landed in bounds had he not been pushed by the defender. This year, the referee doesn’t have that discretion, both feet have to land in-bounds regardless of whether a defender is pushing the receiver or not.

The Fade

route in the endzone will be MUCH less successful because of this rule…unless the CB is totally burned, he is usually in a position to push the WR out if the WR has to leave his feet to make the catch.

The elite will still find a way to make it work

A la Braylon Edwards’ freak one handed catch in the Browns v. Jets preseason game last week.

But yes, I agree, we will see CB’s use this to their advantage all year. I think the back of the endzone plays will be impacted more than corner/fade routes.

with the fade

a lot rests on where the QB puts the ball…many times, QB’s try to ensure the ball gets over the DB, which results in very little room for the WR to make the catch in bounds…back of the endzone routes could suck too, although, usually, the receiver is running parallel to the back line when he catches it…

Also

The rule was just about impossible for the refs to fairly enforce anyway, so I have no problem with them doing this.

Which is why

the Browns missed the playoffs last year.

Sorry

Sorry guys but this is my last visit/post. I’ve tried over and over again to get it but I just can’t. All I’m reading is a bunch of stuff I’ve already seen elsewhere. Then a bunch of Gretz Homers comment on it. Not that I don’t respect Gretz, I do. But what’s the point?
You guy’s are a bunch of wannabe computer nerds as far as I’m concerned. Get a Life!

Well quit reading elsewhere and come here first!

Anyone seen my palm rest? Computer nerd hell, what in the hell is a hyper-link and how in the hell do you do it?

So You're Posting A Comment To Say That You're Not Going To Post Comments?

Honestly, you could have just not said anything and nobody would have noticed, or even cared, that you left. But the fact that you decided to take the time to post something indicates that the issue isn’t the content on the site or opinions expressed (which you could easily have ignored) but your personal, rather pathetic, need to lash out at a bunch of people you don’t know and criticize them for doing something they enjoy that’s got nothing to do with you. In which case, good riddance…always happy to be rid of trolls.

P.S. “Diggler69”? Seriously? You decided to give yourself a screen name styled after a fake porn star with a fake dick? You couldn’t even come up with something cool like “RonJeremysTwin” or “BiggusDickus” or “BigPapaPump” and you tell us to get a life? Have you even seen a naked woman in person? :)
