I'll have a story in Monday's Kansas City Star detailing the kicking battle between Nick Novak and rookie Connor Barth.
It's interesting that the Chiefs have been in camp for more than two weeks now and the competitors have yet to separate from one another. Barth has made 86 percent of his field goal attempts in practice, Novak 83.

Barth
He’s a rookie and he’s got a lead (albeit a slight one) over a guy who’s played in the NFL for three years (and done very little to impress). This should be a no-brainer.

agree
the one knock I have against Barth is his short kickoffs (a knock he shares with Novak)...

While It's Nice To Have Long Kickoffs
It’s more important that your kicker be able to hit his field goals. If we absolutely can’t live with Barth’s kickoff distance we can burn a roster spot without compromising our team on some guy with a strong leg who can’t hit the broad side of a barn on field goals. Plenty of those guys around every year.

I agree
I just thought it would be nice to win the field position battle some time =)

short, yes...
But I’ve heard people talk up his ability to accurately place his kickoffs… he has good directional control. I don’t mind if he can only get it to the 5-10 if he can put them in a corner that allows our coverage team to pin them in better, especially if it’s someone dangerous in the return game. I wasn’t really watching how deep he was getting them during the game, but I did notice that they weren’t uber deep.
Of course nothing stops a return better than burying the ball in the back of the end zone. What about Colquitt, can he kick deep? Sounds crazy, I know. But I think it would also be crazy to get another kicker just to kick off and use Barth to kick FG’s. In that case it wouldn’t be Novak because he can’t kick deep either. I guess what I’m saying is I have no idea what to do about this, but I don’t think it should keep Barth from beating out Novak.

Agreed
Colquitt’s got a good leg. Wouldn’t bother me at all to see him as our kickoff guy if it means we can keep Novak (assuming, of course, that it won’t negatively affect his punting).
