Middle LB

I know Harris wasnt great last year...but he led our defense in tackles...I didnt think he did that bad....and now we brought in Demario Williams this year to challenge him.....i dont know too much about him any info?

I read today on the RedZone that Pat Thomas ran with the 1st team defense all day.

I guess there trying to feel out who is the best fit for our team. I just wanted to see what everyone thought about it.

I know its too early to tell but who do you think has the best chance of getting the job and why

I found it very interesting

that Thomas was with the first team. The guy played special teams all last year and now he’s a possible starter?

Let’s give it a few weeks and see.

Nap Harris

DeMorrio Williams is NOT challenging Nap Harris for MLB (that rumor got started by KC Star idiot Adam Teicher). Williams is there to give Donnie Edwards more breaks and will probably take over his position when Edwards retires. In all the training camp stuff I’ve been reading, Williams is trading time with Donnie and playing Donnies position on the 2nd team defense.

Pat Thomas has been the 2nd team defense MLB, but as you said, today he was running with the 1st team. I think he’s been playing well and they probably just want to see how he does with the big guys around him rather than running with a bunch of scrubs.

I think its Nap Harris’s job unless somebody takes it away from him.

ChiefDJ: You better sit down...

Adam Teicher writes this in the July 29 Red Zone:

But Thomas, for now at least, is the Chiefs’ starting middle linebacker.

Thomas takes reps with the first team for one practice and that’s Adam’s conclusion? C’mon. I agree with your assessment, DJ, that “he’s been playing well and they probably just want to see how he does with the big guys around him.” It could also be a way to light a fire under Harris. Gun will get the LBs going. I’d suggest that the MLB might rotate a little this year, but with that position calling the signals (and presumably wearing the special control tower helmet this year), that’s one of the toughest positions for that to happen.

Assuming "Mike" wears the defensive headgear

They could be scrambling to switch helmets if Donnie gets dinged up for a play and they want to send in Thomas or Williams to play at the same time as Harris. Radio helmet? Non-radio helmet?

How many times will “Too many defensive radio helmets on the field” get called this year as a penalty? And what will the referee signal be for that penalty? And how awkward will it be for the designated person to play with that five-foot fiberglass pole sticking up from the top of the helmet with its little red triangular flag? New definition of “spearing,” eh?

All good questions – I’m looking forward to seeing how this works out – has anyone heard if they are practicing with the radio helmets? Just to get the calls down, to avoid miscommunications during a game?

I also read

That Gunther was disgusted with Pat Thomas’ performance:

"Give them a call for the front, you’re the middle linebacker!

- Cunningham, who was so disgusted with Pat Thomas he threw a water bottle into the air.

I’m guessing Pat isn’t winning the spot, that it’s like DJ said, they just wanted to see him with the #1’s….

Middle LBer

There are a couple of excellent Cover 2 Middle LB prospects expected to come out in next years draft. I still look for the Chiefs to snag one of those if in a position to in 2009.

Next Year...

Wow

I totally forgot Lauranitis didn’t come out this year. Didn’t he declare then back out?

+1000

that guy has the potential to be the next Seau.

Wow!

That is a pretty telling article on Nap. It describes his play very well. I would say that the competition is pretty wide open for middle linebacker. I am going to cross my fingers and hope that someone will win the job and be a pleasant surprise! There seems to be a better mix of linebackers in camp this year because i think i saw that they cut Nate Harris who they liked a lot last year.

I vote for Maualuga next year unless we need to draft another lineman in the first round...

The author of the blog

Writes a bit for SI. For what it’s worth, he worked for the Broncos and Raiders.

[He could probably use spell check, though.]

It's worth a look for sure,

but I would take most of what he says with a grain of salt, he seems to be very biased against the Chiefs, and some of his posts regarding the team have been very inaccurate…

I think Gun will make the best decision

on who will start in the middle. I believe that is one reason he took over the position coaching duties.
