Sic 'Em Chiefs -- Name that Season!
Hey all --
For my birthday, my family just sent me a framed photo of my brother and me at Arrowhead from the mid to late 80s (awwww!) -- braces, acid wash jeans and all. I'm trying to pin down the exact year, but the only identifying feature in the photo is a stadium cup with the "Sic 'Em Chiefs" logo on it.
Does anyone remember which specific season they used this campaign?

"Sic em"
seems to be a phrase used by a lot of teams over the years.

I didn't either...
...and when you’re a librarian and can’t find it on the Internets, you turn to other source materials—like the fans themselves.
Ah well. I think we have it pinned down to either the 86-87 or 87-88 season. I suppose that will have to do.

Was there a pop culture reference of "sic 'em"
like in a movie or song that would have found it’s way to sports? that might help pin down the year. (I won’t be much help, I was only 10 in 1989).

Good idea PV
“Who Let the Dogs Out?” is a song written and originally recorded by Anslem Douglas for Trinidad and Tobago’s Carnival season of 1998. —from Wikipedia
Your cup was ahead of it’s time apparently.
Or maybe it was: “Sic ‘em, Danno!”

It was a full-on campaign from the mid-to-late 80s...
...with a little wolf guy hiding behind the words. Kind of cute, actually.
But like I said above, we have other evidence in the photo (my freshly pierced ears and shiny braces, not to mention those stylin’ acid wash jeans!) that’s helping us to narrow it down.
My brother’s contribution: “There’s a guy in the background wearing a DeBerg jersey. That means something!”

The DeBerg jersey should help...
He played in KC from ohhh, I think 88 – 91 or so… I think his best year as I remember it was 90… I think he was competing with Jaworski in 89 and Kenney in 88 and was the starter outright in 90 and 91, but he started most of the games every year he was here as I recall it… He wasn’t an incredible QB but had a nice play action fake and was certainly an iron man (I seem to recall him playing with a broken finger in a game and just taping it up and playing through the pain)...
I’m guessing that it may have been more like 88 – 90 that you attended the game…

I think that solves it then
If gritsnyc nailed it between 86-88 and DeBerg played between 88-91, then it had to have been 1988… right?

Same day service
Because Gritsnyc is my wife I do nice things like email the Chiefs and ask them stuff. Debbie Ball of customer relations at the Chiefs replied the same day to say:
“I talked with our Director of Public Relations and the year was 1986. Hope this helps you with your photo. If you need anything else, just give us a call.”
Thanks Debbie!

Nice
I wonder about the DeBerg jersey then, considering he didn’t come until 1988. Assuming the DeBerg jersey was when he was with the Chiefs and not the Bucs (in 86).

Red herring
I think the DeBerg thing is a red herring. Or from a different photo.

I think he was mistaken
Upon closer inspection, there’s someone wearing a jersey in the photo, but nowhere near DeBerg’s number.
Thanks for all the help, everyone. Especially our new BFF Debbie in the front office. I ask you—what other NFL team would provide such service to the fans?!
Blame my wife!

Hey!
At least log out and use your own username otherwise it loks like I’m talking to myself.
