Croyle on Audibles and Rollouts
Q: The new offense will allow you to make more changes at the line. How do you feel about that? Is that kind of exciting for you?
CROYLE: “It is. It’s something where, if the numbers are stacked up against us, it doesn’t make sense to run into it. With the new offense you can either change the declaration of the play or we can change the play, or we’ll have checks going into different games or different game plans. It just gives us the best chance to get in the right play and have a positive play.”
Did Croyle audible at Alabama? Doesn't sound like a complicated call to make. Basically it sounds like they will have a second play in their pocket and Croyle will switch to it if he comes up to the line and sees the wrong defense for the origianal play. Sounds great! Q: The roll-outs and bootlegs that you’re going to be doing – how well does that suit you?
CROYLE: “I like it. It kind of gets me out in the open. Let’s me show off my great speed (laughs). It’s good. It’s something that we needed. We didn’t run a whole lot of it last year, but it suits our offense as much as we count on the running game. ”
Okay...it's preseason. Time for optimism. Everything looks good on paper. Having said that, I'm likin' Chan's common sense. When everyone knows you're just going to sit in the pocket, it reminds me of a Bill Cosby routine in which he pokes fun at the British soldiers.... Imagine the British and colonists in the middle of the football field as the referee explains the rules:
You: The British army. You must wear red and march into battle in straight lines. You: The colonists. You may wear natural colored clothes and stand behind the rocks and trees.
Chan appears willing to mix it up and have our guys with the ball do things that the other guys trying to get our ball won't be able to anticipate. Don't place an X eight yards behind the center and tell the defense that's where our QB will be every time. Seems like decent strategy to me. What do you think? Audibles, rollouts and the occasional bootleg seem like a good idea to you? Can Croyle handle it? Can he throw on the run? Do we have the lineman that can do it?
I have to admit I have been a little fearful of Chan's time away from the NFL. But when people say he uses players' strengths and point out that he has been successful at each of his offensive coordinator's stops, I can see why. Chan, my man... Pour me some of what you're serving, also. I'ma thirsty for some scoring.

Chan Gailey could turn out to be the perfect OC for this team.

The fact that he has all that experience should make it easy to make halftime adjustments.

Halftime adjustments
were non-existent last year. Good point.

Calling halftime adjustments "non-existent" is a little harsh isn't it?
We almost always switched ends of the field. :)

hahah
often if we were winning at halftime, we adjusted over to losing in the 2nd half…

I love it when the offense talks about scoring points as their first job
For us to have a good year, me and him [Bowe], both of us have to have good years, completing a lot of balls and scoring a lot of touchdowns. —Croyle in same interview
Instead of using the offense to play defense. I get the fact that we should use some clock and not throw three incompletions. First downs and touchdowns, however, help the team more than anything.

Chan completes Herm
There are a lot of great coaches that have a conservative philosophy. What makes them succesful is finding an Offensive Coordinator that can work within that philosophy and keep the Head Coaches trust. Tony Dungy was as conservative as they get at Tampa Bay, but he goes to Indianapolis and meshes with the Offensive Coordinator there and has the QB to execute and now doesn’t look quite so conservative anymore. Same can be said for Bill Cowher.
Herm has never had an Offensive Coordinator that was smart enough to do the job creatively (Paul Hackett, Mike Solari…) WITHIN Herms comfort level as a conservative coach. I think Herm and Chan will immediately hit it off like he and Gunther did. It will still take some time to develop, but I think long term, we are going to see a much more creative offense on a Herm Edwards team than we ever thought we would.
It all comes down to the coaches personalities meshing together and trusting each other. Herm never trusted Solari, and for good reason.

Easiest job in the world
OC at Indy.

Seriously
They have two OC’s… Peyton and Tom Moore.
But really, Moore is a dig-dang good OC.
I’m glad they will let Croyle make adjustments at the line this year. How can you presume that someone will be the future QB of the team and not let him try out things that a true starting QB should be allowed to do. In this day and age, it is essential to be able to adjust on the fly.

Is Herm really the defensive coordinator in disguise this year?
From C.E. Wendler:
I’m going to stop calling Gunther Cunningham a defensive coordinator, because if training camp is any indication, he’s having more fun being a linebackers coach this year.
Chan = Off Coord
Gun = LB coach?
Herm = Def Coord?
Who knew a “simpler” offense could be a more creative offense? I think you’re right, DJ.

This was the 2nd best move
of the off-season. The best move was obviously dumping the dead weight of Weigman, Terry, Turley, Welborne, and Dunn. We have to be better this season on offense. If we can just get our running game back I will feel a lot better. And a damn kicker too!

Tony G seems convinced that this new group is a better club
He was a little ticked at first that we were bringing in so many rookies. Now it sounds like he think they can play, though. And are better than last year’s players.
As far as kicker: Remote control goal post wideners is one of the improvements at Arrowhead , I believe.
