i saw this posted on espn about croyle
what do you think?
I've received many e-mails from worried Chiefs fans. They are all concerned about Brodie Croyle. The overriding theme is that the fans are wondering how long of a leash does the third-year quarterback have?
That is a great question. You would think all season. The Chiefs are in a rebuilding mode so there is no rush to bench Croyle if he is struggling a bit. This team likely is not going to be a playoff contender.
The Chiefs have time to see if Croyle can develop into a solid player. The Chiefs should tell Croyle right now that he has the job all season. However, it is just for this season. If Croyle struggles, the Chiefs need to look elsewhere in 2009. But Croyle deserves to have one season to prove himself.
Of course, all bets are off if he is totally outplayed by No. 2 quarterback Tyler Thigpen in camp and in the preseason. If Croyle is a complete disaster this summer and Thigpen is a complete stud, then the Chiefs should make the change so they can put Thigpen in the position to prove himself for the future. But that seems unlikely.
At this point, it is Croyle's job to prove he can handle it. For now

If you ask me (kcpriest31) I think most chief fans are behind croyle and ready to see what he can do i think he has all the right tools and has showed some real good signs, he just needs more experience and learn to make better decisions, and i think croyle "could" be the QB for the chiefs
As for the leash on croyle i think he has this season and another as long as he can pull out 6-9 wins for the team if not i dont know how much longer he will be in KC, unless its obvious we didnt lose because of croyle
I think he made a few good points about croyle and the season but i think he was way off about thigpen...the guy hasnt proven anything, but not that hes had a real chance or anything

I don't know if leash is the right word
I don’t think there’s a number of wins he has to reach to keep his job but more of an improvement level he has to reach. We’re not legitimately competing this year, so I suspect he has all season unless he completely bombs.

Agreed..but
I do feel the chiefs cannot sit and wait all year long to see what becomes of Brodie. if he is a total fluke and Thigpen does not deliver then what? Damon or wait till 2009 draft? and if you say draft, thats only if we get in the top ten. Has anyone though about the O line? Whoever plays QB needs to have time in the pocket and needs to be protected. Brodie needs to breakout this year,if we are 2-3 by the time we get our bye week I say bring someone else in. Thoughts….

2-3 going into the bye
I’m thinking would not be so terrible. That would mean that this very young team has 5 games under its belt, and the newly installed o-line has had a chance to gel. It would mean that Brodie has won his first 2 NFL games.
Looking at the schedule, the likely candidates for 2 wins would be Oakland at home and Atlanta on the road. If this is the case, the Chiefs would only have 1 division loss (to Denver) and and two road losses to New England and Carolina. 2-3 could mean a tie for 2nd place in the division at this point. I usually like a later bye but this would be a good spot to prepare for the long haul. I could see the team starting to really gel going into game 6 at home vs. Tenessee in October.
If KC starts off 2-3, then I predict a 9 win season, and possible playoff hopes.

Darn Quarterbacks!
As silly as John Gruden is by collecting all those quarterbacks, at least he is doing SOMETHING to find one. I am not sold on Brodie ( i do wish him well ), but think that we should have a back up plan besides Thigpen. Chris Simms might be the guy, perhaps another guy might come availible off waivers that is young and has promise? This is by far the most critical position that will make or break a Superbowl run for us. I love our patient strategy in finding players, it keeps us from making to many “Kendrell Bell” mistakes. But, sometimes I think our patience has costed us to miss on players that perhaps we could have had. Quarterback is one position that is worth taking a risk.

O-line
i def. think croyle needs more time in the pocket, thats why i didnt hold anything against him last year, that and we had no running game to help him either…you guys know the story, but i think if were 2-3 by the bye i think croyle should still start he needs more than 5 games with a new offense and new players to prove hes the QB

+1 and then...
I think we’re all in agreement that a pocket in general is what he needs. Last year it was more like a thoroughfare… or as I like to call it… a cluster*#$@.
I think Brodie will also benefit from the chance to build solid rapport with his receiving crew. He will have all camp and preseason to get on the same page with the starting WR’s. If he finds a way to click, things could get interesting.
I’m hearing a lot about Darling’s speed…. and we know that Crizzle can put some stank on his passes. I would love to see some deep balls thrown to DD to see if he can burn some secondaries. If so, that only opens things up underneath for Gonz and D.Bowe to punish some fools.

i think that we need to
try to bring in somwhat of a young buy to backup croyle. someone who has experience that comes to mind might be byron leftwich. i know he’s injury prone but then we cud probably get him cheap, and he would be a better QB in a system that wants to run the ball( like us). im not saying we shud get him cuz i dont think he is the answer i just think some body like him…........or chris simms.

Croyle
As long as the team is moving forward and making strides, I think Croyle will stay in all year. If they suffer serious setbacks or he does not appear to be making progress, I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see them put Thigpen in around week 11 to see what he has.
Croyles job is secure for now, but he does have to prove himself. He doesnt have to become a Pro Bowler, but he needs to prove that he can stay healthy and lead his team.

If
It’s all ifs and buts right now But if they do lose confidence in Brodie then the replacement has to be a step forward. i.e. not Damon.

Yeah, totally agree
But is Thigpen a step forward? Is he legit?

We dont know
If he will be a good quarterback(thigpen)but if he’s not. Herm and the coaches need to think about plan C or plan D. I mean we are talking about the QB spot. The most crucial spot on the offensive side. Whoever plays QB has to be good, if not get ready guys for another 4-12 season. To think the last time the chiefs won a playoff game was in 93 makes me depress.

Give Croyle the reigns and time with the new receivers, backs
His heart will be racing a hundred miles an hour on his first bootleg. But once he starts to feel he has options, and his check-offs become instinct, and starts to know his receivers… he’s got a chance to be a good QB, I believe. He seems to be doing it in practice. I believe he invested time in the off-season, from what I’ve heard.
Besides the O-line, the receiving corps has a lot of work to do.
Here are all returning Chiefs who caught passes last year: (250 total)
Dwayne Bowe (70), Jeff Webb (28), Tony Gonzalez (99), Larry Johnson (30), Kolby Smith (22), Jackie Battle (1).
The following people caught 75 passes last year and are gone:
Samie Parker, Kris Wilson, Eddie Kennison, Priest Holmes, Gilbert Harris, Boomer Grigsby, Jason Dunn, Jared Allen. (Btw, Jared Allen tied Samie Parker with 2 TD catches last year.)
- Darling, Devard
- Franklin, William
- Sippio, Bobby
- Price, Maurice
- Robinson, Kevin
- Joachim, Sergio
- Marshall, Timon
- McMahan, Kevin
- Arthur, Jabari
- Cottam, Brad
- Allan, Michael
- Foschi, John Paul
- Merritt, Mike
Point: Croyle’s going to need some time to learn about his receivers. I don’t mean to make it misleading by listing everyone, because Croyle will realistically be working with a smaller number of new people who run with the 1st team. But beyond Webb’s 28 catches last year, whoever plays 2nd and 3rd WRs will be developing a feel with Croyle this year. Kudos to Croyle for sticking his nose in there and working hard, knowing there’s a lot of work to do with the O-line, receivers and even running backs.
Heck, timing on swing passes is not a slam dunk, and how will Charles shape his escape route from the backfield as Croyle is trying to connect with him? There’s work to be done, so patience will be required. But many exiciting pieces are now in place, imo.
