Chiefs Agree to Terms with T Branden Albert
Kansas City Chiefs President Carl Peterson announced on Thursday that the club has agreed to terms of a five-year contract with T Branden Albert. As per Chiefs policy, no other terms of the agreement were made available.
The Chiefs have now agreed to terms with 10 of their 12 draft picks from the 2008 draft class. Albert joins second-round pick CB Brandon Flowers (35th overall), third-round selections RB Jamaal Charles (73rd overall), TE Brad Cottam (76th overall) and S DaJuan Morgan (82nd overall), fourth-round pick WR Will Franklin (105th overall), fifth-round selection CB Brandon Carr (140th overall), sixth-round picks T Barry Richardson (170th overall) and WR Kevin Robinson (182nd overall) and seventh-round pick DE Brian Johnston (210th overall) as Chiefs signees.

Okay, one more to go.
Let’s go Dorsey! Get into camp!

Even if Dorsey is late to camp
You have to hand it to Peterson for getting 10 of our 12 picks signed. Excellent work.

Update Dorsey negotiations stalled...
Peterson announced that he told the agent for Dorsey that Peterson will not be calling him anymore….claims dorsay’s agent refuses to counter his contract offer….and so the waiting game begins…the problem is that the people signed in front of dorsey signed for less than 60 million or around 60 million except for the quarterback taken int he 3 round….but the 5 pick from last year signed for 70 million….so it is ridiculous for the chiefs to sign for 70 million as the bar is set lower than last year….but the agents do not want to sign for less because it means that they did not get top dollar…so this is another case of on team screwiing up the whole system by signing outside the limits on rookies…..

Cardinals and Falcons
Arizona and Atlanta have been grossly overpaying their 1st round picks for years. That’s what happens when you have a weak GM that bows to fan pressure. You grossly overpay for a player. Levi Browns pay was so far out of line for what his position should have gotten it was silly.

I heard in on 610 all afternoon...
Peterson said that we made an offer a while back and Dorsey passed on it and now his agent is saying that they won’t even discuss a contract until more of the top 10 are signed…

Can't Really Blame Peterson For That
It’s one thing to stick to lowballing, it’s another when the agent just refuses to discuss. Based on how Peterson’s performed so far I’d say that it’s probably best just to let him hold out until the agent decides it’s time to start getting serious. It was more important to get Albert into camp anyway.

Ellis
I’m betting that Dorsey will sign soon after Ellis does, in that case. Ellis was apparently waiting on Dorsey to sign to set a ceiling and Dorsey was waiting for Ellis to set a floor. One of them’s going to crack eventually and go first, then the other will probably follow suit.
Besides, it’s not like he’s holding us back from anything this season, so the pressure’s entirely on Dorsey to sign.

Yeah
Albert was really the critical guy to get signed because of the importance of his position and the switch from Guard.
Dorsey won’t suffer nearly as much being late to camp as Albert would have.

Even If He Doesn't
I know that Clark Hunt is insistent the Chiefs should compete for a playoff spot this year, but honestly even if Dorsey struggles his rookie season and it costs us a few games in the long run the higher draft pick in 2009 would probably be better for the team.

10 of 11?
Not to be picky, but I would give Carl credit for signing 10 of 11 people who are available. It looks better than 10 of 12 and I’m pretty sure we’d agree it’s more representative, given Merrit’s reported injury. Technically, I know it’s 10 of 12. grin And yes, excellent work on the draft and the signings!

!
This has really been a great year for Carl getting our picks signed, I honesly think he might have been starting to feel the heat. Maybe he realized that a good offseason (which I think we have had so far) is the most likely way to turn an organization around (which he needs in my opinion for future job security) I dont think Clark Hunt is really going to wait for his antics. Peterson has done a really great job this offseason!

Rumors
around the Net are saying that Dorsey’s agent is waiting for the 6,7, and 8th picks to sign before Dorsey does.

First Post and I Love this sight!!!!!
Heard the Vernon Gholston has all but signed his deal….Maybe that will speed up Dorsey’s negotiations
since he is right behind him (#6)

I'll Bet He'll Wait On Ellis
That’s the most comparable player to him so it wouldn’t surprise me if Dorsey’s agent waited until that deal was done so he can set a floor for Dorsey’s deal.

If It Gets Too Lengthy
I’m sure that Dorsey will decide to sign. These guys aren’t getting paid until they do and so far the Chiefs have demonstrated a single-minded dedication to getting their players into camp.

Kudos To Peterson
He got the guy we needed to sign most signed before camp starts. Very good work.
As for Dorsey, if he’s waiting for the 6, 7, and 8 guys to sign, I doubt he’s going to be out long. All of those teams want their picks in camp. Probably the most relevant contract out of all of those is going to be Ellis’ anyway, since he was the second-best DT so Dorsey’s probably looking to use Ellis’ deal to set a floor for his own.

Albert Was The One I Was Worried About Anyway
Figured Peterson might try to play games with him because he was switching positions (so he’d try to pay him like a guard and not a tackle). With Dorsey you know what he’s being targeted for so the negotiations should be a lot more straightforward.

As I think about what is transpiring with these signings
it makes me wonder if there is a little Clark influence behind the scenes?
by Lanier63 on Jul 24, 2008 10:12 AM CDT 0 recs
Kinda funny
I went looking around the news sources and I cant find any mention of Albert being signed. Not doubting the point, just saying, the media as a whole doesn’t concern itself too much with Chiefs news.
I did however see that Brett Favre peeded on the toilet seat and didn’t wipe it off.
by Lanier63 on Jul 24, 2008 10:25 AM CDT 0 recs
I am going to make a prediction
Dorsey will sign by the eleventh hour of leaving for camp. The media however, will say the Chiefs front office was not successful in signing all of their picks, because they cannot sign Merritt while he is injured. That part of the story (injury) will no be highlighted.
by Lanier63 on Jul 24, 2008 10:46 AM CDT 0 recs
I wonder how much the salary cap room has influenced the signings?
The Chefs had a lot of room to work with this year, after all the cap weight that was cut/traded/not-re-signed, so I bet that has made Carl’s job a lot easier.
I also noticed that a lot of these deals were for 3 years, to see whether the 4th year is un-capped or not by then. If the labor agreement does expire, we have the rights on all these players for 6 years, if I’ve read correctly, but what about if we’ve only signed them to 3 year contracts? Do we lose them if we don’t re-up after the 3 years, or do they have to sit and rot for 3 years before a different team could possibly sign them?

That's Changing
Once the current CBA expires, free agency doesn’t kick in until 6 years instead of 4.

My Understanding
Do we lose them if we don’t re-up after the 3 years, or do they have to sit and rot for 3 years before a different team could possibly sign them?
The team will hold their rights until they’re waived or released. The only recourse those players have if they’re unhappy with the contract situation they’re offered will be to hold out.

But also
Take the Devin Hester situation….If he doesn’t report to camp 30 days before the first game of the season then that year won’t count towards his four years of service hindering his ability to become a UFA.

Players Aren't Free Agents For Six Years Without A New CBA
This is the standard that all of the current rookies are going to be under without a new agreement (and the owners and player’s association aren’t close to agreement). And that’s basically going to be a career for 80% of these guys (and will cut down on their ability to get a big long-term contract since most of them will be 28 and nearing the end of their prime), so I don’t think losing a year of service time is going to be much of a factor. We’re probably going to see a lot more holdouts the closer we get to the expiration date.

Well, yeah
It was four years but if the fourth year happens to be 2010, the first year without a cap, then it reverts to six years, right?

I Believe So
But that still means that the rookies this year are going to have to wait six years for free agency unless a new deal gets done. So holding out isn’t that big of a deal for most of them because the odds have increased that they won’t get another contract.

Dorsey
may take awhile if he is waiting for the 6th 7th and 8th to sign because Sedrick Ellis has already told the media that he is waiting for Dorsey to sign so his agent can get as close to that as possible…..I don’t know i say DOrsey gets signed by monday at the latest but i would have to say Friday night at the earliest

?
Question- Does anybody think we take a look at Lecharles BEntley somewhere in training camp? He is i think 27 years old and yeah i know he just got healthy aftewr missing i think 2 years but he was at in 2006 one of the best centers in the league and now he wants to play RG which IMO is a weakness with Jones slated to start….I would like to know your opinions so feel free to respond good or bad,,,,,,thanks

I Wouldn't Be Opposed
So long as we got him cheap. But I get the impression from the complete lack of interest in him that he isn’t the player he was before the surgery and staph infection…understandably so.

LaCharles' Injury
He blew out his patellar tendon…that’s generally a career ender. I think you can count the guys who’ve returned from that on one hand, and none of them were ever as good as they were before. Then when you add in the staph infection (which can end careers on its own) you’re talking an extreme longshot. Sounds like the guy’s pretty much done.
Cadillac Williams had the same deal, and although they’re giving positive reports on his progress I’m betting he’ll never be a starting-caliber running back again and wouldn’t be surprised to see him as a roster cut after training camp.

And he doesn't want to play cheap
We have to remember that most of these guys have pretty big egos and take pride in what they can do and Bentley being a former Pro Bowler is no doubt one of them. Just because they get hurt doesn’t mean they’re going to willingly take a 50% or more paycut. Sometimes if they have to sit out a year or two they might be willing, but it sounds like he’s not at that point yet. He still considers himself a pro bowl player and still expects to be paid like one. Only problem is he may not be that guy anymore after the surgery.
