Jared, Jr: Brian Johnston
Player to watch: DE Brian Johnston, Chiefs 7th round pick
College: Gardner-Webb
Height: 6-5 Weight: 274
Projected Round: 4
- 24 stops for loss
- 6 sacks and 22 QB pressures
- 8 tackles on goal line plays
- 4 fourth down stops
- played left end
Coming from Gardner-Webb (like Idaho State), can he play at the NFL level? If so, how fast can he get into the line-up? And can we remember that Jared Allen didn't play at last year's level in his rookie year? (only 39 tackles, but a respectable 9 sacks) Some people projected Brian to play DT in the NFL. Don't think that's the plan in KC, but it tells me he's got some beef.
So is it Turks time to shine? Can Boone find a new gear and play DE? Or will a possible Johnston, Johnson, Flowers trio on the defensive left side have opposing RBs looking for the sideline in a hurry to avoid the hurt?
Does DE Johnston start at any point this year?

Johnston
i dont thik were going to see Johnston at DT I think if tank and turk got past that 1st year learning curve..which i hope they did if would be nice to see boone back in the middle Could you imagine Boone and dorsey clogging up the middle and getting to the QB
As for Johnston i do know he did practice with the first team defense sometime in OTAs and minicamp….that cant be a bad sign

Dorsey, Boone, Tank
...should all be excellent cloggers. And I don’t mean Welsch folk dancers.
I expect your Dorsey/Boone combo to be quite a pass rushing duo from the inside. If we get a good bookend to go with Hali, such as Turk or Johnston, that group should give us an effective 4-man pass rush this year.

Jared Allen was a steal
He would have gone higher if not for off the field problems even before he hit the NFL.

To label someone a "steal"
Will take some time, I would think. Anyone from the 7th round who sticks with the team would be a good pick, in my eyes, And if he starts, that would be pretty close to a “steal.” And it probably isn’t fair to stick Brian with a Jared comparison, any more than talking about Sapp and Dorsey.
As far as Johonston, I don’t know why - aside from the small school - he didn’t go higher in the draft. Was he unknown, or was there a specific knock on the guy? Lack of a speed rush?

Steal may have been the wrong word
He was one of those guys whose talent level should have put him higher in the draft but dropped due to off the field problems.
And really, he wasn’t a “steal” because those off the field problems was ultimately one of the contributing factors to him being traded.

It wasn't the lack of a speed rush
Johnston can flat out fly off the line – I think he was the fastest guy over 260 lbs. at the combine.

talented
He sounds like a promising pick. I was wondering if the reason he didn’t go to high was due to the small school he played at? I know that there were a ton of players at his position that were heralded nationally.

People want to say that the whole small school thing was one of the reasons why he was taken late, but when he played against better players at the Hula Bowl, he got 2 sacks and a forced fumble early before they started to double team him.
Teams won’t be able to do that so much with Johnston, Dorsey, Tank, and Hali… you double or triple team one player and youll let another through.
Throw in Johnston’s 79 plays vs the run for a .12 yard average last year and he could be an every down end.
The real knock on him was his short arms… but Jason Taylor carried the same stigma till he won Defensive Player of the Year… so that means crap to me.
Johnston is one of the players I’m anxious to see this year, him and Brandon Carr.

I agree
Carr and Johnston are the two I can’t wait to watch in preseason. I expect Dorsey, Albert and Flowers to be at least servicable – I’m looking to players like Morgan, Cottam, Johnston, Carr, Richardson, etc. to surprise. And from what I heard from Minicamp the two that may really surprise are Carr and Johnston…
