Chiefs Agree to Terms with RB Jamaal Charles, TE Brad Cottam
Kansas City Chiefs President Carl Peterson announced on Monday that the club has agreed to terms of three-year contracts with RB Jamaal Charles and TE Brad Cottam. As per Chiefs policy, no other terms of the agreements were made available.
The Chiefs have now agreed to terms with eight of their 12 draft picks from the 2008 draft class. Charles and Cottam join third-round selection S DaJuan Morgan (82nd overall), fourth-round pick WR Will Franklin (105th overall), fifth-round selection CB Brandon Carr (140th overall), sixth-round picks T Barry Richardson (170th overall) and WR Kevin Robinson (182nd overall) and seventh-round pick DE Brian Johnston (210th overall).

Clarification Request
Agreeing to terms of a contract with Merritt does not obligate the Chiefs to pay him x dollars or keep him on the roster, does it?

I don't believe so
I think the only money they would be obligated to pay would be small signing bonus. And for a 7th rounder, that bonus is probably only a few thousand.

Well then
the only 3 answers I can think of are
1) Merritt has done so well in OTA’s that his agent is haggling for more money (unlikely)
2) he’s not going to training camp (more likely)
3) He is hard to reach by cell phone (he must have sprint)

Possibly not sign?
I don’t know that it’s been said specifically yet, but one has to wonder if Merritt is just a blown draft choice that they’ve decided was a mistake and they’re not going to sign. I’m sure many of us have had that thought.

Any other year having 8 players signed before camp would be 100% success! However, I’m glad we have the extra 4.
