Chiefs Agree to Terms with Safety DaJuan Morgan
Morgan is the sixth member of the Chiefs 2008 draft to class to agree to terms, joining fourth-round selection WR Will Franklin (105th overall), fifth-round selection CB Brandon Carr (140th overall), sixth-round pick T Barry Richardson (170th overall), sixth-round choice WR Kevin Robinson (182nd overall) and seventh-round pick DE Brian Johnston (210th overall).
What's the hold up with TE Michael Merritt, the Kansas City Chiefs' other 7th round draft pick? You'd think he'd be one of the first to get under contract. One issue may be the position at which Merritt will be paid. He comes into the NFL as a tight end but could probably be used on the offensive line as well.
The signing of Morgan is good news of course. I mentioned earlier in the week how these signings seem to accelerate as camp approaches.
Here are the Chiefs who have yet to sign:
DT Glenn Dorsey
OT Branden Albert
CB Brandon Flowers
RB Jamaal Charles
TE Brad Cottam
TE Michael Merritt
I'm only worried about the first three getting here on time. Charles, Cottam and Merritt should fall in line by the time training camp begins next Thursday.

To be expected
I go on and on about how its not just Carl Peterson, but most GMs in the league that occassionally don’t get their 1st rounder into camp on time, but if your 3rd-7th round picks are late, you’ve got problems.

Peterson
He’s a rotten negotiator for getting his picks into camp on time. Honestly, I can’t wait until he’s finally gone…or at least not in charge of contracts (for both draftees and free agents) anymore.

Merritt
Although honestly I don’t care if he signs Merritt or not. The dude wasn’t on anyone’s radar for the draft and we’re already stacked at tight end. He was something of a pointless selection.

Scouting
I think we are doing pretty well (for sure better than most teams) with our 7th rounders in Herm’s time here…both of our previous 7th round picks made the team and one of them is a starter – I wouldn’t be surprised if both Johnston and Merritt make the team.

I’d rather have a GM that is a tough negotiator than one who pisses the salary cap away.

I'd Rather
have a GM who’s a tough negotiator without needing to be an abrasive dick who alienates our players and scares off desired free agents from wanting to sign here.
Getting players for a decent price is a Pyrrhic victory if it means that the players you need don’t want to come to your team because they don’t want to deal with the hassle of talking to you. Eventually, all you’ll be able to get is other peoples’ castoffs, which isn’t really a bargain at all.

Maybe
this
a GM who’s a tough negotiator without needing to be an abrasive dick who alienates our players and scares off desired free agents from wanting to sign here.isn’t possible…we don’t really have a good understanding of any other GM in the league (hell, we don’t even have a good understanding of Peterson, only what the media and players who haven’t been signed/resigned have to say)

Actually Carl Peterson has a decent rep with the players I've talked to...
I work with an ex-pro NFL linebacker, he says that Carl has a good rep with all his friends, even the players on the team. He said thats the business side and thats why you hire an agent – Carl’s just doing his job and hopefully your agent does a better job than Carl does.
I was talking to him about Jared Allen and why Carl didn’t give him a contract when he asked and he said that he wouldn’t have paid Jared when he was asking for it either. He said that Jared had a lot of nerve asking for a raise while getting less sacks than the rookie at the other end of the line and facing a 4 game suspension. Of course that’s just him :)

If He Gets Them All Into Camp In Time
I’ll give Carl Peterson credit for doing his job.

Rumor
One of my coworkers told me that he heard on the radio that Charles, Cottam, and Merritt are signed, but the news hasn’t been released officially.

Glenn Dorsey
I would not be surprised if he shows up late, or not at all, to camp. With that high of pick and talent level (as most know, #1 on many teams draft boards) he is going to be pricey, and the Chiefs will do everything they can to save a nickel. John Clayton reported that he believes he is the most likely player in the draft to miss some or all of camp.

as far as I'm concerned...
The money that we would have had to give Jared Allen had he stayed should be carried over to sign Dorsey and, if possible, some of Albert.
I won’t be surprised either if he’s late/missing. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it is not the case.

Dorsey
It doesn’t help that the guy just ahead of him got 60mil. I am sure he is wanting a large chunk of change. Peterson is in a tight spot because nobody on the team is getting that kind of money. A rookie who is already slated to start may want a contract that would wind up making him the highest paid player on the team.

I think Albert should
be a higher priority, get him in camp on time so this new o-line can start to gel. If Dorsey is the talent that he is hyped up to be, it should not take him long to catch up. Tank is going to have to step up this year anyway. Albert needs every second he can get starting at a new position at a higher level. Just my two cents though.
